Vulcano is a volcanic island on the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Aeolian Islands archipelago. It covers an area of 21 km².

The center and the northern part of the island is occupied by the Fossa volcano with the crater Gran Cratere, which is still active. The last strong eruption occurred in 1888-1890.

Ostatnia silna erupcja miała miejsce w latach 1888-1890.

Fagradalsfjall started erupting on the 19 March 2021.

Fortunately it is currently only threatening a road and Internet connection in the area and there is no imminent threat to live or villages.

The weather in Iceland is highly variable and on the day we planned to see the vulcano, the fog was so heavy you could not see it from a hill opposite. In the evening with the fog lifting we did follow a well established trail taking you to a hill with impressive views opposite the vulcano. The view was something out of the Lord of the Rings. Dark large lava fields with in the middle the vulcano erupting every 20 minutes or so surrounded by smoke. Seeing this around midnight at blue hour was particularly impressive with the dark oranges and reds.

it is thought that the eruption may continue for quite some time and if possible it is quite a sight to visit if you are in Iceland.

Since yesterday, a neighboring island, La Palma, has a new vulcano.

The Canary Islands are volcanic, as it happens in other volcanic areas, they are emergency plans in place and monitoring teams. This is how after the start of tremors in La Palma since last Saturday, there were predictions and plans put into action, the management of this crisis has really been outstanding.

I have mixed feelings, I'm sad for those that have lost and will lose their houses and businesses, farms, etc but as a Geographer, I can't help but to be excited and amazed by the power of creation/destruction of natural phenomena like a volcano's eruption, especially when it happens on camera while we're all watching the news waiting for updates!

So yes, yesterday was a pretty intense day! and inspired me this post.

I had a vague idea but couldn't really picture it, if you will...

The architecture of Kraftwork's PAZ house boasts full-length glass windows, which immediately invites a natural landscape surrounding it straight into the heart of its 4 spacious rooms.

I imagined it on a gentle slope without a designed garden but rather, foliage from vegetation that naturally grows on the lapilli and rocks instead.

The open terrace is perfect for al fresco dining/entertaining because there's privacy from cliff barriers (yay!) and the weather would always be in our favor — but, of course without any barriers or distractions from the landscape surrounding the property.

In my por English:

Rio Tinto is named for the deep red color of its waters and travels 100 km through the province of Huelva (Andalucía, southern Spain).

The red color is due to the presence of heavy metal cations eroded because the acidity of the water (pH 2.4 buffered, strongly acidic). The abundance of minerals Pyrite and Chalcopyrite (copper and iron sulfides) and the presence of strange acidophilus bacteria that oxidize these minerals, generate the sulfuric acid media that eventually re-feeds the process of leaching of metals.

In the river water surviving bacteria, microorganisms and life in extreme conditions, NASA is studying this media and has recently described this microsystem as the closest thing to Mars on Earth can find.

Copper, iron, manganese, ..., are extracted in the mines of Rio Tinto for 5000 years by Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims, and has been exploited for the last two centuries by the British company Rio Tinto Company Limited .

In the small town of Rio Tinto Victorian houses can be found precisely in neighborhoods inhabited by the English people during that time.

To visit and travel the river bed you can count on Fieldwork Riotinto (rio and mines visits).

View from the upper slopes of the volcano on Vulcano in the morning after the previous series of uploads, it's a shadeless walk, with sulphurous fumes to deal with at the top.

The Parinacota volcano lies on the border between Chile and Bolivia and has an altitude of 6343m. The last eruption is thought to have been around 230AD. The picture was taken on the Chilean side of the border.

Antigua, Guatemala with El Fuego volcano in the background.

As we walked around the city it was this scary active volcano we could see in the distance, but local people seem to go about their business as usual...

El Fuego is well known as being constantly active at low level, as it was also when we visited the city in February this year - 2016.

Antigua (meaning 'ancient' in Spanish), was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Sicilian east coast with a view towards the Etna Volcano, the little Town on the right is Castelmola, the one on the left side is Taormina. Hope you like it!
