”Ladies and gentlemen, I will be blunt, because we haven't much time left. As you are likely aware, the Central American Secession Area bombed one of our top military bases two days ago with what we've confirmed to be some form of growth accelerating wave emitter and a cocktail of genetically modified plants engineered to be highly destructive. Our attempts to cut back and contain the growing plants have failed, and burning was reserved as a last resort but ultimately failed as the GMOs secrete flame-retardant mucus. In these two days, they have completely engulfed several cities. Within the last seven hours, they crossed our borders into Canada. Obviously, CASA and their affiliate defense provider Aether Phylltech Incorporated do not intend to stop with punishing East-USA, they have decided it is time to expand their territory. It is reasonable to believe they will not see any reason not to attempt the EU in the future... Besides surrender, our only option is to destroy the growth area. Our intel in CASA, which we're very lucky to to have, has sent us a file pertaining to the “Green Tide” bomb and its progeny. It is very technical; in short it outlines the mechanism and how to disarm it. It is a two-step process: the bomb itself, which emits an energized signal that sends hyperexpanded matter to plants containing a certain artificial gene, must be remotely deactivated from CASA. Secondly, all the plants in Green Tide's arsenal are engineered with a special genetic subprotocol that kills the organism when a certain “key protein” is introduced in a specified amount to the organism's system. CASA no doubt will turn off their bomb and kill the green wave when they are ready to occupy our land, but it will be too late for us at that point. I have called you together to evaluate and brainstorm a means of infiltrating CASA, deactivating the wave bomb, and retrieving the coded protein and information about the proper amount to administer it in. I need not tell you that this will be difficult. Our spies have managed to hack a few images through CASA's firewalls, but we really have no idea what CASA has done recently, as they began to block orbital cameras a few years back. However, intel has sent us a number of files pertaining to their border defenses, which are invaluable. All drones sent to investigate have lost transmission before their cameras could get a glimpse, and neither they nor the brave souls who tried to see it in person have ever returned.

There is a wall that encloses the entirety of CASA. Each fencepost stands fifteen feet tall and fifteen feet away from the next one. The actual wall consists of three horizontal rods, reaching a height of nine feet. A total of six metallic pods sit on the rods of each wall segment, and from these grow a type of climbing ivy that has been engineered to convert excess sunlight into electrical energy, effectively electrifying the fence. Like most API patented GMO organisms, they secrete flame-retardant mucus, so we cannot simply burn down the wall.

Atop every post is a motion sensor and light, except every fifth post...those are topped instead by a long-range electromagnetic pulse railgun outfitted with a camera and chemical laser cannon. The EMP has a range of 750 yards, while the laser cannon remains powerful for long enough to shoot down a high-altitude airplane. The specifications here note that the electro-ivy will discharge to power these defenses when the wall is not under attack, but they are also powered by an auxiliary generator within a complex several miles from the wall.

I know what some of you are thinking: Tunnel under! Sadly, we cannot. If you'll direct your attention to the conference screen, you will see CASA's primary border defense. The wall is secondary, though without the guns we could easily fly over.

This...monster...is noted here as one of the more complex experiments API has released for CASA's use. I will quote: 'Subject 491: Dionaea Muscipula extensively modified to enhance size, maneuverability, speed, and environmental durability for purposes of national security. Modifications include, in the following order:

Hormonal Controls: Modified to reject humans (fingers used to trigger trap mechanism) wearing patent #236 security pheromones except when otherwise prompted.

Size: Accelerated and assisted crossbreeding of largest organisms per crop to create a 50x specimen after 672 generations in 1.28 years.

Speed: Accelerated the organism's metabolism using Procedure 43.

Mobility and Structure: Modified genome content to replace cellulose in individual cell walls with cartilage and/or keratin. Flame-retardant mucus #4 was designed to be secreted. Extra space in stem, basal, and root structures due to size increases was redesigned to incorporate tension joints patterned after muscle structures in the trunk of an elephant. A more complicated nervous system with ganglia spread throughout the organism was implemented. Bipedal structures from class Aves and a caudal appendage for balance were carefully replicated using the organism's tissues and grafted to it. Reverse gene-sequencing procedures were followed to replicate the organism naturally.

Reproductive Inhibitors: Organism was modified to allow reproduction only through budding to create exact clones, three times, when fully mature. The buds will detach and take root; the adult will feed them until the first one to uproot itself kills the others for food right before the adult dies.

Instinct, Behavior, and Final Controls: The organism's ganglia were imprinted with subprotocols enabling dexterity in locomotion and battle and instinctual confining parameters of patrol except when triggered by any of the range of applicable control pheromones, hormones, and code proteins listed in the API GMO control directory. A more specific command to place a portion of any prey it captures by the pylons of the border fence so they could collect the biodegrading matter to fertilize the defense ivy was also included.'

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to say that is is moments like these that make me regret running for the presidency.

Another build for BL3. I think I'm starting to get into a running theme that isn't too realistic for my taste, but still refreshingly natural. "Natural".

Shortly after departing Washington Union Station, Virginia Rail Express MP36PH-3C No. V59 passes Long Bridge Park with train 327 15h30 Washington - Broad Run on 13th June 2022.

Only once I got here did I realise that big building nearby was the Pentagon! Probably not the best place to be stood with a big DSLR.

Happy Halloween to everyone! Much like last year, I made some Halloween inspired OCs!

Alias: Headstone

Real Name: Mason Stone

Gender: Male

Alignment: Villain

Powers: Can turn others to stone with a touch. Has very durable skin as well.

Influenced By: Marvel's Tombstone, Gargoyles, Tombstones

Backstory: Mason's family was quite poor, and as such lived in the Drag district. He would do what he could to help his family's financial troubles, but at the end of the day, he was still just a kid. Growing up in the Drag district, he would become friends with the wrong kind of people. That, and his parents dying from different health complications led to him joining the West End Warriors in his teenage years. He was a courier for the gang. During one of his deliveries however, when grabbing the package, one of the vials inside would drop onto the ground. Mason would inhale the chemical gases soon unintentionally which would cause him to collapse. However, he would learn he didn't die hours later, when he would wake up. It was at this point he would learn of his newfound appearance. With a touch, others would turn to stone. The first victim was his best friend at the time, Shianne. He started closing himself off to others, as he didn't want anyone else to end up like Shianne. However, he also saw this as an opportunity. He climbed up the ranks of the West End Warriors, and used the money he earned to support his little brother, who now was in a foster home. Headstone's quite ruthless when he needs to be. It's only a matter of time, before someone else gets on his bad side.

Alias: Spectral

Real Name: N/A

Gender: Male

Alignment: Villain

Powers: Invisibility/Phasing based powers.

Influenced By: Ghosts, MCU Ghost, Boo Bitch by Kim Petras

Backstory: An assassin for hire, described by others who have survived their encounters with him as a ghost. Appearing out of thin air, and their attacks going straight through him. Spectral has yet to be caught by anyone, hence why his name is not public knowledge.

Alias/Name: Vrex

Gender: Male

Alignment: Villain

Powers: Enhanced Intellect, Enhanced Instincts, Enhanced Trapping

Influenced By: Goblins

Backstory: The result of yet another experiment done by Victoria Frankenstein. This "goblin" was quite clever/cunning. He had a brilliant mind, and as such, creates many gadgets/traps, and helps Victoria in various schemes. However, unlike most goblins, he was the same height as an average human. His name was given to him by Frankenstein's Monster "Evelyn". He goes around causing mischief with Willow Wisp wherever they can.

Alias: Ossuary/Relic/Bone King

Gender: Male

Alignment: Villain

Powers: Necromancy

Influenced By: Skeletons, Skeletor, DND Necromancers

Backstory: A skeleton of many names, depending on the tale he's telling at the time. He was brought into this world by Hex. A powerful necromancer, he would immediately recreate/summon the love of his life, Lady Undercroft, who yes, is another skeleton. While Hex summoned him into the world, he feels no obligation to her. However, he will protect his Lady at all costs.

Alias/Name: Willow Wisp

Gender: Female

Alignment: Villain

Powers: The list is quite lengthy. The first of which is being able to change from human, to Will O' Wisp form, at will. In wisp form, she can fly at remarkable speeds, and is technically intangible, allowing her to phase through solid materials. In addition, the wisp can cast various magical spells, including but not limited to illusions, and telepathy.

Influenced By: Tracer's Will o wisp costume. Will O'The Wisp

Backstory: Another one of Victoria Frankenstein's creations. A Will O'The Wisp, said to be a product of swamp gas and active imaginations. The truth, of whether this is a wisp, or some sort of fairy, is not known. Unfortunately, Victoria has been rather tight lipped on the truth of what happened, not seeing the value in telling mere mortal humans. What is known, however, is that this wisp has been bound to a human body. Anyways, this wisp has been known to lead tourists of the city to their deaths, appearing as a ball of light at night. In addition to this, 'Willow Wisp' (The name everyone has started using for the wisp), has been seen robbing several banks all over the city, within a matter of minutes. It seems as though Willow just likes to cause as much mischief as she can.

AKA Vrex - A Custom bike built using the VRod engine. I don't know....

Did you spot the wild parsnip on tour?

As my first Linux digital video editing project, I used ffmpeg for format conversion and Kino to cut out some dead time and add the audio loop, which is copyright-free courtesy of Ottmar Liebert.

Next time I would consider using Audacity to make the loop sound a bit smoother.

Thanks to Derrek for providing the video footage.

Today I experimented with hitching two bike trailers together to increase the hauling capacity. It worked fine. I hauled these three large bags of yard waste out to the dump. There was room for more in the second trailer, but I thought I would be conservative on my first two-trailer trip. Hidden from view is more cargo for a different errand: A 250 Gig portable hard drive and accessories. The unusual rig turned a few heads, but was still reasonable fast and stable to pull. I averaged 12 to 13 mph for the 10 mile round trip.

This is just about all the sport and utility I need in a round-town vehicle..

Update: a found way to haul more in a simpler, more efficient way. The bakfiets!.

this is what I looked like as a teenager

Since my Rans Vrex pivot broke, I replaced it with a much sturdier replacement made by Bacchetta.

I took the opportunity to go ahead and replace the whole shebang with a Bacchetta stem and handlebar set as well.

Overall, I'm pleased with the result. It's enjoyable to to ride, and stable, as before. On the other hand, the original Rans handlebars worked well enough. I wouldn't have considered changing them if this other part hadn't broken.

Here are some details to consider if you want to take on a project like this:

* You need a longer screw cap bolt to screw into the star nut in the front headset, because the Bacchetta hinge replacement is taller. My local hardware store had the 40mm "M6" piece I needed for this.

* You'll also need a metal cover for the headset, to replace the cheap plastic Rans one. My LBS had this in stock for cheap.

* The mirror happily continues to work well after the transfer. It's a standard Mirrcyle mirror. With the new handlebars, the "elbow" in the design wasn't needed and was easily unscrewed and removed.

* The "speeds" on the gripshifters are harder to read in the new setup, but it doesn't seem to matter much. Likewise, the compass is no longer quite upright, but it works well enough, anyway.

* Have a few zipties on hand to pin the cables to the handlebars. I still need to add a couple more keep them better against stem.

* Speaking of which... replacing all the cable housings is necessary. I had a bike-mechanic friend help me with this. Otherwise, I would have needed the LBS to help me with that as well.

At 18:27, the cancelled #25 heads through Dorval minutes after the crammed bilevel train.

A V-Rex? This is in the Destination Daytona dealership on their showroom floor so I guess it's sanctioned somehow. Or maybe they just want to show that the V-Rod can be customized as radically as the cruisers? Pretty sick anyway. I wonder what kind of math went into that fork.

It's common that when someone sees our bakfiets they comment that "you could haul your groceries in that thing".

The obvious hauling capacity is definitely good marketing for the bakfiets, but it really excels at kid hauling, with the visibility, box walls, bench seat and built-in seat belts.

I had been getting my groceries by bike just fine without a bakfiets for several years, and it remains more efficient to shop with a more traditional bike, although how they haul is less apparent.

The Arkel panniers in the photos have about 25 lbs of groceries in them (We bought 20 pounds of bulk pasta).

The bags themselves weigh only a couple pounds or so, and attach and detach easily to the center rack on this recumbent.

If I used all the carrying capacity on the recumbent, I could easily carry nine grocery bags, without hooking up a trailer to it.

On the bakfiets, I would be carrying an extra 30 pounds or so of bike weight even before the groceries are added.

Like a big truck, the bakfiets is more convenient, but less efficient. It's easier to dump everything in the bakfiets bucket than it is to sort into smaller bags and attach to a bike rack. Any load I could fit on the recumbents racks would technically require less pedaling effort because there's less bike weight to haul with it.

Yes, the bakfiets are great for hauling and they can carry bulky objects that would be difficult to haul another way, but traditional bike racks and saddle bags often work sufficiently well and can be surprisingly easy and efficient to use.

-->> v. V-rex !!

I test-drove this myself today. It was comfortable, light and fast.

Kurt uses this one to commute sometimes.

Another photo of this bike is here

The Papo Running T-Rex is a scaled model and looks more like the V-Rex seen in the 2005 Film, King Kong.

This model was released in 2012 in both Green and Brown and has the same level of detail as other T-Rex's made by Papo.

I like how they give this model different positioned teeth compared to the other T-Rex's in the Papo range.

Again features include a reticulated jaw which can opened and closed depending on the owner

I recommend this for a Dinosaur fan/collector for ages 3+.

Travertson V-REX

GocVIP.com

In the custom cruiser mien, it's not unusual to throw down $50K or more for something that stands apart from the hordes of other choppers trying to be unique. And yet they are all pretty much just variations on tired themes. But nobody will think that when you pull up on a V-Rex. Looking like a refugee from a sci-fi movie, the Travertson-built monstrosity is unlike anything you've ever seen. There aren't many $40,000 bikes we are willing to describe as a bargain, but for its incredible traffic-stopping countenance, V-Rex qualifies.

Built by the people who turned out the turbine-powered bike made famous by Jay Leno, the futuristic Travertson V-REX garners more attention than any motorcycle we've ever ridden.

A V-Rex? This is in the Destination Daytona dealership on their showroom floor so I guess it's sanctioned somehow. Or maybe they just want to show that the V-Rod can be customized as radically as the cruisers? Pretty sick anyway. I wonder what kind of math went into that fork.

This photo will only be of interest to short wheelbase recumbent cyclists.

On the right is my recently broken Rans Vrex pivot. It snapped in the middle of a ride on extremely cold day. Since the bike was unridable after that, I'm fortunate I was able to get a lift soon after.

On the left is the same part, made by Bacchetta. Notice that at point the Rans part broke, the Bacchetta is noticeably wider, and I expect less likely to break.

The Bacchetta part also retails for about $10 cheaper than the Rans part.

From looking at the listing on their website, it looks like Rans is still skimping on this part of their bike construction, which is unfortunate for the people who depend on them.

Recumbent bikes really don't have too many "recumbent specific" parts, but this is one of them. I have been very satisfied with my Rans Vrex.

However, the Bacchetta Giro 20 seems to have better engineering on points like this, and appears to retail for about $300 less. From this, it seems the Bacchetta Giro deserves strong consideration when compared to a Rans V-Rex.

UPDATE 3/1/2008: Today I found that Rans has quietly updated this part to be more like the Bachetta. In the new product image, you can see that it tightens with two bolts now instead of one, like the Bachetta. And although it's difficult to tell in the photo it looks like the part where mine broke might be designed to be a little wider now. They have also dropped the price of the Vrex to currently be $50 less than the Giro. (By using cheaper components, in part, I think). Notably, they also switched to using "tweener" handlebars, very much like the bars that are the Bachetta Giro.

On Skull Island lived herds of plant eaters called Ferrucutus. The Ferrucutus where large creatures up to 34 feet and there only predators where V-rexes. When Skull Island sank in 1945 the Ferrucutus where moved to Monster Island they adjusted to living in the plains and have made friends with Anguirus.

Perhaps it was because the temperature was below 10 degrees F. I had just stopped to de-fog my goggles and insert the warming packets in between my inner and outer mittens.

I pulled on the handlebars as I cranked forward to take off onto the road again.

SNAP. My ride was over. The steering column had broken and there was no piloting the bike without it.

Was it time to use my Bicycle road side assistance? That would have been a first. I still wonder who comes when I call them for help....

I called a friend and was picked up shortly.

Now I shop for new handlebars. I think I'll avoid the design that involves the part that snapped this time...

update: you can see how the broken piece compares to the sturdier replacement, and the overhauled bike with replacement handle bars.

( And damn, I wish I could take close-ups that weren't blurry. )

I accidently left my recumbent bike at a friends house three miles away yesterday. Today I went and got it.

Dan got this bike a couple of weeks ago, and this was the first time I was able to see him in a while and ride with him on a his Lightning Phantom recumbent bike.

At 6' 6" tall, even the maximum settings for the bike fit aren't quite ideal for him.

Since I'm 6' 4", I was able to test drive it some and compare it to my Rans Vrex recumbent.

I like the sit position better on on the Phantom-- it is further forward and lower down. This better centers the weight between the wheels and moves the body further down out of the wind stream. However, I prefer the Rans seat cushion of the Phantom and the Rans Vrex handle bars. The Phantom also has mounts for only one water bottle, instead of the two that are the Vrex has on the sides of the seats.

With only about ten minutes on the bike, my preference remains with the Vrex, although I was influenced to consider models with a lower seat position if I was shopping for a recumbent again.

From my own collection, "replica" skull of the fictitious dinosaur "vastatosaurus rex," an evolved tyrannosaur, from the 2005 movie King Kong.

Although it's not particularly large, the chunk of concrete along with the trailer weigh nearly 100 pounds. I'm hauling it to the dump!

I enjoyed my first experiment hauling waste to the dump by bike so much that I repeated the experience Several times. After three trips to drop off the concrete, I moved on to hauling yard waste.

The yard waste was very bulkier, but still much lighter than the concrete.

It seems the remains of the garden will provide a reason to make several more trips...
