Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Buckhrst Hill, Essex*. Here are the details of the project
The Copper Garden in Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5QN
Breif:The plot is a large garden in a detached sub-urban property
There is an area of block paving outside the house, separated from the rest of the garden by iron railings and gate. This should be retained in the design.
The client has a dog, who should be considered in the design.
Other things for consideration are the different levels in the space (the garden slopes away from the house) and the need for screening from the hospital to the left of the garden.
The clients have requested a clean, contemporary space
Solution: This design is crisp and angular with a contemporary feel, and divides the space into three distinct areas in order to incorporate the existing block paving and retain an area of lawn for the client’s dog.
Leading into the main area of garden from the existing block paving will be a path comprising rows of mint sandstone interspersed with rows of loose polished black Chinese pebbles. This will dogleg first to the right, then to the left and continue halfway down the right hand side of the space, where it will finally turn left again to run across the middle of the space. The journey of this path shall enclose a large area of paving, laid in a formal pattern with stylish black honed slate tiles (60cm x 60cm).
Directly in front of the existing block paving, to the left and right of the first section of path, two 50cm high rendered block raised beds will serve to firmly separate the block paved area from the rest of the space. These beds will be filled with elegant Zantedeschia and spiky Miscanthus for truly contemporary planting scheme. A further, long, rendered block raised bed planted with black bamboo separates the middle section from a large area of lawn at the bottom of the space. The colour of the raised beds would be decided in conjunction with the client.
The lawn area will be framed by a series of silver birch, underplanted with evergreen sedge and black grass, to give the bottom of the garden a secluded, copse-like feel.
Several decorative features sited within the main area of paving will become focal points of the space. The first of these will be two unusual sculptures, one on the left and one middle back of the paving, which will comprise topiary spirals planted in tall tapered black zinc planters contained within two large square frames joined together to form a hollow, rectangular, box-like structure. Behind the left hand box sculpture a host of vertical copper tubes will appear to be ‘growing’ from a railway sleeper set into the ground. Several similar tubular sculptures, nestled between the bamboo in the raised bed running across the garden, will produce a dramatic and visually stunning backdrop to the garden. To ensure continued use when the sun goes down, the garden will feature a variety of lighting chosen to give both general lighting and to highlight certain features. Low voltage spot lights placed throughout the beds will give the garden a gentle wash to the garden while drawing attention to the architectural planting scheme. Down lighters in the top of the box sculptures will highlight the bamboo below, with white light sticks hidden amongst main tubular sculpture to the left bringing a playful feel to the space. Uplighters below the remaining tubular sculptures will illuminate the long raised bed to striking effect. Finally, stainless steel eyelid lights set into the exposed walls of the remaining raised beds will help to illuminate the path and paving, and guide ones journey through the space

Historic home, first-class museum, picnic grounds, play areas, gardens, dining for every taste -- this beautiful Cantigny Park was a gift to the people of Illinois from Robert R. McCormick.
The museum is one of the best I've ever been in. Fantastic tour of the famous Robert McCormick's home. The gardens are gorgeous, as you can see. Admission/parking is only $2 before 10am, and you get a $2 voucher for food/drink (I usually buy a mixed-berries fruit smoothie :). Cheap, educational, and beautiful place! Highly recommended.
A cash and vouchers registration centre at Abu Shouk displaced people’s camp in El Fasher, North Darfur.
Based in Darfur, Sudan, this innovative pilot seeks to replace traditional paper food vouchers with e-vouchers. These smart ration cards contain the beneficiaries’ biometric data and a microchip that can be loaded with funds. This can be accessed directly via point of sale terminals to make purchases.
This ensures that food assistance gets to the people who really need it, rather than ending up in the hands of self-appointed ‘community leaders’. It also offers greater choice of – particularly locally preferred – food, stimulates local markets and provides beneficiaries with ownership over their household needs.
429,060 Darfuries currently receive cash vouchers. The project is now being scaled and transferred to Bangladesh.
The WFP Voucher System is funded by UK aid.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Acton, London*. Here are the details of the project
Brief: The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless.
Solution: The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.
The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.
The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.
A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.
A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.
After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.
Testimonial: "After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.
We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.
Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.
We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".
Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.
The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.
The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.
Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.
Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!
There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.
Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Balham, London*. Here are the details of the project
The Outside Room Garden in Balham, London SW12
BRIEF:
The space was formerly a double garage nestled between two houses. The roof had been removed, leaving behind a worn concrete and cobble floor, garage doors, and two rusted steel girders crossing the space. In creative terms, the brief was fairly open: to design a clean and contemporary space, suitable for entertaining yet functional enough to accommodate off-street parking for a family car.
SOLUTION:
The design was inspired by the strong sense of enclosure to the space, taking elements of a typical lounge to create something that was very much an exterior room. New railway sleepers, chosen for their clean look and contemporary feel, featured heavily as a construction material.
These were used to create raised beds around the boundaries, an integrated 'sofa' and coffee table, and a dresser-style shelving unit down one side of the space. Judicious lighting within the beds and shelving units served to create ambient lighting similar to that found in a well-planned drawing room.
The 'living room' theme was further enhanced by the inclusion of a bespoke wrought iron chandelier hanging from the cross-point of the girders. To allow for off-street parking, the existing garage doors were replaced with two large bespoke wooden gates, and pattern-imprinted concrete was laid to provide attractive and durable flooring. Planting was used to blur the linear appearance of the space, with architectural, spiky evergreens and lush, leafy climbers taking pride of place. A water feature constructed from a Heath Robinson-esque series of copper piping and funnels provided the finishing touch to the garden.
TESTIMONIAL:
"The phrase 'making a silk purse from a sow's ear' comes to mind! What we had grown used to fondly referring to as 'The Prison Yard' is now a tropical oasis that gets more use than any other "room" in the house. Katrina and her team interpreted our brief perfectly and delivered, through wind, rain, and on one notable occasion a violent thunderstorm, our perfect garden. We can't thank them enough for what is, as one old chap commented in passing, 'The most remarkable transformation I have ever seen'. Thank you. We love it!"

Not all of the city, but some of the highlights.
Outside it was a glorious day, and felt like summer on the inside of the ceiling to floor plate glass windows. Phew, its gonna be a scorcher! And what better way to spend the day than with our very own private tour guide>
What better indeed.
We met Maki at nine, and after some introductions, it was decided to go to Tokyo Station to exchange our vouchers for rail passes, thus making the rest of the travelling on the holibob possible. It also allowed us to be shown how to use the Metro, swiping our cards and looking at the map to plan a route. Handily, all lines have letter prefixes, and each station is numbered, so we were staying near K19, and to find our way back, get to the K line and go to the end, and Bob's you Aunt's live in lover. As it were.
I was in heaven, I have been dreaming of travelling on the Tokyo Subway, but I was doing it for real, and snapping. All.The.Time.
We arrived at Tokyo Station after a change onto one of the overground lines. Man, it was already hot, but Maki pointed out the profusion of vending machines. Everywhere, and for 110 Yet you can buy a half litre of cool h2o.
She lead us through various parts of the station to the rail tour office, we all filled out a lengthy form, then we were given our pass which gave us unlimited train travel for two whole weeks.
That done and the fact the Imperial Gardens were nearby, that is where we walked to next, through a maze of modern glass skyscrapers, over half empty 6 lane roads, and to the entrance to the gardens. Once upon a time it was the residence of the Emperor, he still have a thridd of it or something, but the rest is a public garden, which is littered with historic buildings, defenceive walls and the remains of castles and storehouses and the like.
Did I mention it was hot? It was hot.
But the gardens were sensational, and gave us an understanding of the different prefectures in Japan, as all were represented. Also there was green tea plants and bamboo. And on the wing I saw three different species of swallowtail butterfly, but I had left my macro in the hotel, so made do with watching them flit about.
We take a time out to have some water from a vending area before completing the tour round the gardens, before walking to Tokyo Station again, but this time getting a bus to the commercial area for a walk round the public fish market.
It was hotter.
It seems all tourists in Tokyo, and a good proportion of its residents also had the same idea, as it was like Venice on a very busy day.
And it was hot.
The sights and smells were fabulous, but the lanes were narrow and chocked with people, all walking at different paces, some eating, some drinking and some walking with their family. We were trying to keep pace with Maki.
After an hour of walking and loking, and it being half one, it was decided that it was lunchtime. Over the main road bordering the market was a swish sushi place, who had tables att eh counter, so we could watch our food being prepared. Only I wasn't hungry, so made do with some rice and simple sushi whilst Jools and Jen had a set meal. I drtank some ice cool beer.
I had another.
After that we walked through the commercial area to the Tokyo version of Harrods to look at their food halls. None of us are big shoppers really, and we did it as Maki made it sound like a great thing, and some of the displays were wonderful for sure.
Finally she took us to the trendy area, really, so we ccould look round the best souvenir shop in the city. We looked round, bout some stuff, and then said to Maki that we had enough confidence to use the metro, and as we were by Shibuya, where I wanted to snap in the evening, we would bid her farewell one hour early, and we would look for a coffee shop.
After looking in a coule, we found a place in a rooftop place, in the shade, but it was still warm, so we order ice coffee and take the weight off our feet, which after a day's travelling, maybe a seven hour forced march round Tokyo in 30 degree heat wasn't the best thing. But we had survived, but our legs and feet we making some complaints.
We took a Metro to Shibuya, and then went looking for the famous crossing, but we were an hour early, so maybe we should find something to eat. There was flashing neon lights everywhere, and it was all a bit confusing to be honest. Then Jen says there's a place to eat on the top floor of the mega camera store near us.
So we take the lift to the top floor, and are shown to a booth overlooking the street below, and shown how to use the tablet to order food and drinks. Some of it was even in English, which was nice. We order some nibbles and drinks, and pressed send. Twenty minutes later the food arrived, but no drinks, we called the waiter and sent him to fetch beers. And all was good, in fact we mellowed out and enjoyed looking out as the light faded and the neon shone brighter.
We went downstairs and I went looking for the crossing, a six-way pedestrian crossing that is iconic, I took a place looking towards the brightest lights and snapped away. It was a scene you can only imagine, I switched to the wide angle and slowed the shutter speed down and snapped some more. There was still some light in the sky, so the shots were pretty darn perfect, even I says so myself.
Happy with my shots, and the fact our legs and feet were screaming, we made our way back to the Metro then back to the hotel and back to the rooftop bar. It was a heck of a day, and we had achieved so much. And found our way back with no trouble either.
We played cards on the roof, with the Sky Tree shining a mile away, looking wonderful, and so we decided that we would go there the next evening.
Cheers

We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.
We want to thank you for your interest in our work and thanks for visiting our work on Flickr, we do appreciate you and the contributions you make in furthering our interest in photography and on social media in general.

There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.
Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, London*. Here are the details of the project
The Victorian Terrace Garden in South Woodford, London E18 2PP
Brief: This was a tired family garden in need of a little inspiration and rejuvenation, and had dilapidated boundaries that required replacement. The brief was fairly open - to create a family space with a patio and some lawn.
Solution: This garden was loosely inspired by Victorian gardens to create a fairly formal and symmetrical space split into two distinct areas. A paved area was laid directly outside the back door, featuring natural slate in a hand-cut random pattern that was inlaid with an assortment of Victorian tiles interspersed with a tapestry of dark and white paddlestones.
Flush beds to the left and right of this patio serve to frame the space and soften the appearance of the newly installed fencing. A trellis screen and archway divides the patio from the rest of the garden, effectively creating two separate spaces within the whole.
To the left of this patio we constructed a raised pond from used railway sleepers, featuring a medusa head fountain mounted onto an upended sleeper, from which water gently spouts into the pool below. The pool itself was constructed so that it is at the right height for sitting, allowing one to perch at the edge of the water. A wide channel of gravel between the paving and the trellis screen provides an area for the display of various planted pots, urns and tubs.
The second half of the garden was laid mostly to lawn, with a new shed in the bottom right corner and a small stepped area of slate paving in the bottom left corner beside the gate. Flush beds were dug the length of the garden down both sides, packed with cottage style, year round, planting in a variety of colours.
The space was simply lit with a series of low voltage spots dotted throughout the beds, while the patio area was illuminated with two stainless steel spots angled to shine down from top of the trellis and an underwater light situated in the pond.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Wallington, Surrey*. Here are the details of the project
The Art Deco Garden in Wallington, Surrey SM6 0QR
Breif:
The client has lived in the house for a number of years and is currently renovating parts of the house. A keen gardener with an inherited garden, she is struggling to see what works in the space and where she should begin with regard to re-styling the garden. The client installed a pond a year or so ago which she would like to retain in the design. Directly outside the back door there is a small area before the garden levels up. Gill would like to increase the size of this space to allow for a larger table when entertaining and socialising with friends. She would also like to ‘grow her own’ and to this end has a greenhouse and raised bed at the bottom of the garden. The house is Edwardian and the client is keen to reflect the age and style of the house in the final design.
Testimonial:
A serpentine pathway edged with black limestone setts will arc down the garden around a central lawn . The first half of this path will be surfaced in mint fossil sandstone, while the second half will be surfaced with a buff self-binding aggregate (hoggin). The two halves of the path will be joined by a small oval patio in mint fossil sandstone. A series of tall timber arches will frame the first section of the path, adding height and a sense of journey to the space. The second section of the path will feature an edging of step-over fruit trees between the path and the lawn.
A group of tapering raised beds constructed from railway sleepers will add a little height and depth to the bottom of the garden.
The existing pond will be improved with the addition of a slate rockery waterfall. A slate chip dressed sunken rill will snake down the garden towards the house, following the curve of the path. At the end will be a self-contained water feature, consisting of a flat slab of slate over which water is fed to cascade into a slate dressed reservoir below.

I like the moss capsules at the front of the flower.
A voucher from around the point where BP started to phase out the National brand (for the first time, at least).
Yipee! Southwest Airlines sent me a belated birthday present. I recently flew with them for the first time. About half way through the outbound flight, they announced that we'd "lost the #1 engine" and had to divert to LA to change planes. Upon landing, we were greeted by two ginormous fire engines for inspection before being allowed to taxi to the gate.
After checking in for our return flight, we found out the plane was still on the ground in Baltimore. So, we made them track down our luggage, waited for it at the baggage claim, retreived the power cord for the laptop, went back through check in and security, bought a DVD of The Darjeeling Limited and finally settled in for a welcome distraction. (Goofy? Yes, but I never seem to tire of Adrien Brody!) We followed that up with a nap on the floor, a delirious flight back, and a bleary-eyed cab ride home in the wee hours of the morning.
Needless to say, I wasn't too impressed with the whole ordeal. But I am impressed that they took it upon themselves to send an explanation and a $250 voucher to each of us. Thanks, Southwest, for caring. I'm definitely feeling the luv. Seriously. That's what I call customer service!
