Early fall storm clouds create what appears to be a vortex swirling up from the top of "Bug Light."

Portland Breakwater Light: Legend has it that many considered the small lighthouse to be “as cute as a bug” early on, and the nickname “Bug Light” stuck. Located in South Portland, Maine, it was first built in 1855, as a wooden structure, but the breakwater was extended and a new lighthouse was constructed at the end of it in 1875. During WWII, nearly 9 acres of fill was added along the breakwater by New England Shipbuilding Corp. for the purpose of creating a shipyard for building liberty ships. An estimated 30,000 people were employed there from 1941-1945. Today, the site has been transformed into a popular park with views of Portland, Maine’s largest city.
