Vortex really is a great-looking coaster. It's an example of the Arrow megalooper. These are dying out now but were all the rage for a while in the 80s.

A violent vortex appeared in the edge of the frame!
...I noticed it as soon as I started waving a white scarf vigorously within the beam of an LED spotlight.

This is a photo of vortex shedding from a cylinder moving through water. I took this photo more than 15 years ago for my thesis work (description of technique is on next photo - Side View of Von Karmen Vortex Street). The cylinder is moving to the right and is at the right edge of the picture. The cylinder was painted with dye which is coming off and forming the Von Karmen Vortex street - with an eddy on one side and then the other - ever alternating (This is the same effect that gives rise to Aeolian tones from telegraph wires).

This is a magnetic spinbar in a solution of TBS. It's spinning at the bottom of the flask from magnetic rotations in the plate and creating a vortex in the solution.
