This would have been a scene from Hell in 1730 and for 6 more long years. Multiple volcanoes erupted some 2 cubic kilometres of lava.
A parish priest of the time wrote of destruction of villages, terrifying earthquakes, mountains rising up overnight, explosions and raining hot ash. West coast of Lanzarote, Spanish Canary Islands.

Algar do Carvāo is an unusual volcanic cave system. It is a volcanic pit or vent, also called a volcanic chimney that is about 80-90 meters (262 -295 ft.) deep. Secondary magma chambers open up on its sides. The vent first formed roughly 3,200 years ago during the eruption on the side of the Guilherme Moniz caldera. It lies near the intersection of 3 volcanic complexes: Santa Barbara to the west, Pico Alto to the north, and Guilherme Moniz, which is a short distance to the south. A second eruption, occurring in the same spot 1,200 years later. It created many of the magma chambers seen today. It is rare to find an open vent or chimney as they are usually blocked with solidified magma/lava.

The Reykjanes peninsula is a region particularly rich in geothermal phenomena due to the high level of volcanic activity. The mid-Atlantic ridge rises to the surface in the Krysuvik region, and there are numerous lava fields, fissures, solfataras, mud pots and other hot springs. This volcanic activity can be seen in particular at the Seltún site.
There are approximately 130 volcanoes in Iceland, active and inactive. About 30 active volcanic systems can be found under the island, in all parts of the country other than the Westfjords.
A panoramic photo of upper Tama Lake with Mt Ngauruhoe in the distance. Upper Tama lake is the remains of an old volcanic crater. Mt Ngauruhoe is an active volcano that has been quiet for the last 30ish years.
Looking more like a scene from the Pacific Northwest, westbound BNSF 7668 brings a double-stack intermodal train through the swag at the MP372.2 intermediate signals beneath the distant dormant volcano known as Humphreys Peak on the evening of June 5, 2021, near Williams Junction, AZ.
This is a front view of a portion of the volcanic wall or dyke that extends out from the Shiprock formation in northwestern New Mexico. This portion of the wall is filled with holes and crevices that provide excellent shade.

With the colourful painted slopes of the San Pedro and San Pablo volcanoes providing an appropriate backdrop, three ex QR 2100 class have been chugging up the long grade for hours, and near the almost-4000 metres above sea level (!) Ascotan Pass.

The fountain at Letchworth State Park, Upstate New York. Every year the fountain is turned on in winter. This year we had a long string of very cold days, many sub zero.....this is the result.
Table Mountain has had a Violent past, as evident by the beautiful colors that can be capture here. Miocene eruption 20 million+ years ago carpeted the area with Volcanic debris. Perfect for photagraphy. This area is also Sacred to the native people of the area. Hoping to go back up during wildflower season.
Something has been stirring on Santorini this week, multiple small earthquakes causing concern. This view is from the highest point of the (present) elevation of the island, with Pyrgos village in the foreground and Oia village atop the peninsula on the horizon, perhaps the most touristy village in Greece, perhaps in Europe.
Happy weekend to all from my snow covered house, driveway and access road.

What? A castle on top of a volcano? In AUSTRIA? Yes, it exists, a medieval castle situated on a dormant volcano above the town of Riegersburg in the Austrian state of Styria.
This picture encompasses a vivid memory of an amazing hike along Lanzarote's wild northern cliffs at sunset. Although most people go for the volcanoes in the southern part of the island, I was drawn to the volcanic cliffs and the archipelago as it is a kind of scenery I hadn't seen anywhere else before.
Two more views of this beautiful park in Northern California. Unfortunately, it has been ravaged by the Dixie fire since shortly after we were there. The area around Summit Lake (below) is still closed to visitors but other areas are now open.
HFF!
There are many reminders of Ardnamurchan's volcanic history in its landscape, including in the black lava rocks on Sanna beach. This dramatically contrasts with the white seashell sands in the Bay, turned emerald blue in the crystal clear waters. Waving marram grasses shimmer in the sunlight against the black mountains behind the little white cottages. It's a horrible place to be stranded, and isolated so far from civilisation.
