The Atlantic Puffin, usually simply called the Puffin, is a member of the auk family and is the most common auk in Iceland. The upright stance and black and white plumage of auks remind some people of penguins although the two families are in fact not closely related. Two other species of puffin, the Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) and the Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) occur in the North Pacific Ocean. Hraun in Öxnadalur, where the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson was born and grew up, is one of the most picturesque valleys in Iceland. It is about 25 kilometers long, straight and deep and narrow, enclosed by high mountains on both sides. But it is hardly isolated, since the main route across northern Iceland passes through it (and always has).

Jónas Hallgrímsson (16 November 1807 – 26 May 1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist. He was one of the founders of the Icelandic journal Fjölnir, which was first published in Copenhagen in 1835. The magazine was used by Jónas and his fellow Fjölnismenn to promote Icelandic nationalism, in the hope of giving impetus to the Icelandic Independence Movement. Jónas remains one of Iceland's most beloved poets, penning some of the best-known Icelandic poems about Iceland and its people.

Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. More at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffin

Norway in desember 2017.
The old timber church from 1681 was torn down well over 200 years ago, and the new Fet Church was built on the same spot. In the churchbook for Fet, it says:
"The church dating back 200 years at the churchyard was demolished in 1889, and a new church, was built on the ground of the priesthood after drawing of the builder Schüszler.
This church was concered on December 3, 1890, by bishop Carl Peter Parelius Essendrop, assisted by the province of the Lower Romarike, Priest of Urskog Schydtz, and all the parish priests of the testament; Haslund (Enebakk), Smith (Høland), Kokk (Sørum), O . Ottesen (Skedsmo), Lund (Nitedalen) and C.E. Nicolaisen (Fet). "
As for the date of initiation, it may seem that there is a slight inconsistency. The Church Department's journal provides 31 December as the date of commencement. However, there is reason to assume that it is the churchbook indicating the correct date.
The plans for the new church were approved on August 26, 1889, after the government's building inspector had proposed some minor changes to the builder's drawings. The church was built on the foundation stone of the brick church, and as it is common for churches in Norway it is located in a high place. But unlike its "predecessor" and the vast majority of other churches, it has the tower and entrance from the east and west to the west. The usual is that the altars are facing the east where the sun and the light come from, which is a picture of Christ. At its location, Fet Church has lost some of this deep symbolism, but it would not have been natural to let the entrance face Øyeren. Instead, it turns towards the village, towards the settlement. And it may be as much symbolism in that the church thus turns its face to the people, is open to the church.
Originally, the church had 3 clocks, but one was moved to Dalen Chapel when it was built in 1905.

A farm that changed a nation, a museum for the future.
A small, very remote farm, on a mountainside almost at the end of the

become a physician in Salerno, returning to become a popular leader, only to
be assassinated by one he had helped, Hrafn Sveinbjarnason lived in Eyri,
the farm that lat

came a young man, the son of a pastor, who was to change the destiny of
Iceland.

The two 1600s houses are tangible evidence of the determined effort to survive in impossible terrain.
