Manjappa takes a break and listens to the song being played on a tape recorder while his fellow dancers rehearse. Manjappa has been learning dancing for the past 12 years with Ashok. He is one of 40 visually-impaired students, whom Ashok Kumar has taught traditional Indian dancing over the last 20 years.

 

"I am very lucky. I have found a teacher like Ashok. Very few people get such opportunities," is what Manjappa has to say about his 'guru'.

The most visually arresting building on the downtown square is, of course, the Fayette County Courthouse, built in 1891 for $96,000. The exterior walls are Belton white limestone, complemented with blue sandstone quarried at nearby Muldoon, Texas. Red Pecos sandstone stringcourses (decorative horizontal mouldings) and pink Burnet granite columns and steps form rich accents. At the base of the clock tower is a large stone slab on which is carved a large American eagle. Above this, at the tower's four corners, are carved griffins. The roof is covered with slate and Spanish tile.

Muma Abosi’s project “Inclusive classrooms for visually impaired students” is an initiative to permit visually impaired students from poor families in Etug-Ebe, Yaounde, Cameroon study in real time alongside their peers. Muma Abosi, together with Children Home International, an organization that promotes the education of children, will provide visually impaired students with educational didactic materials like writing frames, styluses, recorders and white canes in order to improve their learning experience and make the classroom more inclusive.

This project is designed to help visually impaired children who can’t afford necessary didactic materials acquire the education they need in order to improve their chances in life and break out of the cycle of poverty

Artist Bio

I have been visually impaired all of my life. I have Achromatopcia which means that I have no color vision. I am also light sensitive or Photophobic and also have Nystagmus when my eyes fatigue. Art helps me communicate my message, the way I “see” to others. Conversely, my art acts as a vessel for me to understand the way others view the world. When I take a photograph, I want to create more than just imagery. I desire to create an experience. I want that negative to represent more than just the visual dimension, I want it to represent how the moment affected all the senses: to smell, hear and feel what occurred in that particular instant, as each of those elements can become a contributing factor to my motive for that photograph. My artwork is all about what I see.

Intent: to create a visually interesting photo that serves as the main image for my documentation of a day at CSCC campus.

 

This time I didn't convert to black and white, because I like the balance of colors that this image has, and I also didn't want to lose the red glow of the exit sign. I waited for a moment I could capture someone NOT looking at their phone for once, and I'm really happy I did, because I think the way the girl is positioned with her head at a three quarters angle and looking toward the space behind me makes for a more interesting photo, especially since I took it from a low vantage point.

 

Edits:

- decreased exposure, highlights and black point

- increased contrast, shadows and white point

- increased vibrance

- straightened and cropped to better frame my scene and follow the rule of thirds

Image 1: Cultural Ambiguity

Visually inspired by the techniques of scratching or rubbing initiated by the Surrealists (such as Max Ernst), the "Fibergraphy" is a technique to transcribe volumes with the same tool (the laser) across great distances.

 

Mixed with several LP techniques, the result is a confusion of distances and volumes; a reinterpretation of the space bringing these on a single plane blurring the perception of existing visual cues.

This kindergarten in Tiraspol received support through two sub-projects: "Rehabilitation of visually impaired children from both banks of Nistru River" and "Enhancing capacities for pre-school education in the city of Tiraspol through reconstruction of the kindergarten no. 44 for visually impaired children", implemented within the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Programme (Summer 2016).
