When the light of day crosses with the evening dark, it is a moment of sheer magic. As an observer you are aware of a transition and can see the change that is occurring. It lasts for little more than an instant and for me, represents the passing of time. That instant that lies between the future and the past we term the present. Except that it is visualized through light.
The tree in the forefront caught my attention and how the light shone on one side giving it great dimension. It sits in that transition point where light and dark mingle and further represents the present. I do enjoy attempting to tell a story in my work, and this one is no exception.
Visualize yourself walking on the sand, listening to the water splash against the shore.
Visualize swimming, in the oceans, in the sky
Visualize sitting by a beach fire, warming up from the chilly air.
Visualize happiness that won't be suppressed, laughing.
It is the end of the day when the sun sets low, and the mood is sweet and peaceful.
When I saw this I wasn't sure what it was or what it represented as workers were finishing the installation. Since then I've learned that it represents data visualization it reflects the global impact of food production and consumption on the environment. Part of the "Around The Table" exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden. I still don't understand it but it's nice to look at.
I'm still trying to find the sweet spot, where serenity and beauty intersect. I think I'm getting close.

I have seen this shot done a hundred times and wanted to give it a try. It was not as easy as it looks! Getting a ring to stand in a book and getting the right shadow is a bit tricky. I also wanted to find a page in the book that enhanced the image and I think I found one...:)
Gathered yesterday with a group of other flickr group members (Newcastle Sundance) for a sunrise meet at Merewether NSW.
We were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise; give that the forecast was far less promising (it was supposed to be rainy and strong winds - they arrived later in the afternnon!)

Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16 lens @ 11mm.
10 second exposure at f22 ISO100.
Lee ND.6 + GNDH.9 used.

I first start with mentally visualizing the shot. i.e. How the couple will be posed and how to frame them with the Milky Way. In this case, I knew I wanted to have a light behind the couple to have a back lit effect and to create long shadows. I wanted the couple to be framed by the Milky Way bow which would mean capturing a multi-row panorama for a sufficiently wide field of view.
I set up a wirelessly triggered speedlight on a flash stand behind the couple and got them to stand in the desired position with their jackets on, not yet holding the pose. I programmed my Gigapan panorama mount to capture a 40 frame photosphere in a 8 x 5 grid pattern which would take a total of 17 minutes.
As the camera was capturing the sky during the first 8 minutes of the image, the couple had the chance to soak in the view of the Milky Way. When it was time to capture the foreground, I ran to the couple and collected their jackets and asked them to hold the pose for the next 3 frames and quickly returning their jackets upon completion of those frames.
After the shoot, the frames are prepared in Adobe Lightroom and stitched together in Autopano Giga. The final stitched images are usually in the range of 250 to 300 megapixels. They are then processed to my taste and cropped down to size in Photoshop.
