Working closely with the Economic Policy Institute, the economic think tank for the 99%, we designed and developed Inequality.is, an animated and narrative exploration of the key issues that have created economic inequality in the United States today.
Visitors exploring this set of non-traditional data visualization tools quickly learn the history of inequality and soon realize that most of the people in the country have been misled, misrepresented, and misused by the people in a position of economic power.
The visualizations are supported by nearly three decades of objective economic research, and summarized through an animated and easy-to-understand video that is narrated by renowned economist and professor, Robert Reich.
Can economic inequality be fixed? Yes, absolutely. Will it be easy? No, not at all. So let’s get started.
17 Indonesian journalists and researchers came together on December 4 and 5 at AMINEF in Jakarta for the “Investigative Reporting and Multimedia Storytelling for Earthquake Recovery” journalism workshop led by American reporter and training consultant Lucinda Fleeson. The workshop helped familiarize participants with some of the methods and models for in-depth, explanatory, or investigative reporting for use with data reporting results. It also showed how to humanize data, the importance of using multiple sources for news, the importance of working with documents, and analyze recent earthquake articles and prepare outlines to advance stories using investigative techniques. The workshop was co-organized by the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section and Journocoders Indonesia. Journocoders is a community for data journalists and data enthusiasts based in Jakarta to learn data scraping, analysis, visualization, and how to tell data-driven stories. Their co-founder Aghnia Adzkia is a YSEALI alumna who recently received a federal assistance from the Embassy to organize a data journalism program in several disaster-prone cities in Indonesia.

Playing: KT Tunstall - Silent Sea
I was happy in my harbour
When you cut me loose
Floating on an ocean
And confused
Winds are whipping waves up
Like sky scrapers
And the harder they hit me
The less I seem to bruise
Oh when I
Find the controls
I'll go where I like
I'll know where I want to be
But maybe for now
I'll stay right here
On a silent sea
On a silent sea
Physical visualization – how can we gain new insights from our research through the act of building 3-D data sculptures?

Inspired by aharef's html visualizer here's another del.icio.us visualization, but in this case, instead of mapping tags it explores the relationships between del.icio.us users. This network explorer is written in processing and uses force directed graph visualization. The edges between the nodes act like springs. New nodes start from a random position and run to convergence. You can input your own del.icio.us username and see your network of acquaintances build in front of your eyes, assuming of course you've been using the network feature in del.icio.us. For other projects featured in VC, that aim at visualizing the del.icio.us tagging system, you can see more here.

I'm doing pretty good. In the afternoon I drank too much coffee - now I am a little nervous and disordered.
