“Visual sounds” is a digital painting produced subsequently a study on the relation between music/sound and ornamentation. The paining is generated by an innovative, personally developed technique of computational simulation. Throughout the research, four soundtracks were selected as case studies, and analysed with sound measuring tools that translated them in to spectrograms. The selected tracks relates to specific historical times and ornamentation styles: Traditional Peruvian Baroque song, Traditional Mayan Instrument sound, Peruvian desert recordings, and Rococo Vivaldi Orlando Pazzo. The blend of the acquired information, which translated sound in to mathematical curves, was used to generate “Visual sounds”, a decorative pattern rooted in the world of ornamentation and its deep meanings. Abstraction is achieved; essence is kept.

A visualisation of 57000 series in the collection of the National Archives of Australia. The area of each square is proportional to the number of shelf metres that series occupies, while the size of the grey void in each square is related to the number of described items in the series. So a square with a large void (thin "walls") has relatively fewer items than one with a small void (thick "walls") - or no void at all. There's a minimum wall thickness of one unit, which is why the smallest squares have no voids. More on the blog, and an interactive version here.
Data visualisation is key to understanding and communicating the complex content of scientific data. This image illustrates uplift and subsidence in Berlin, Germany, as detected by satellite radars. Different colours represent different rates of deformation. This type of information can be used by urban planning officials to ensure what areas are safe to develop, or if any structures may pose a safety risk.

As part of my latest university project I designed 3 "screens" for use in Flash or Processing that would display data taken from twitter in a stylised and easily readable way. This was my favourite.
Frustrated with the never ending criticism of the BBC, I have taken the average weekly household expenditure for 2009 according to National Statistics Online and compared it to the weekly cost of the BBC licence fee. The figures are rounded up and represent £/week.
I was also frustrated with the online data visualisation tools available, so i decided to make my own using:

I created the design for these cat frames (look closely) and sent them to Shapeways for 3D printing in sparkly alumide.
The pendant visualises EEG attention (red) and meditation (green) data and visualises it on this LED matrix in real time. Using a Mindwave Mobile, Bluetooth dongle and Shrimp microcontroller.
I've built this for use in excruciating social situations such at conferences, networking, bars, etc. I'm interested in extending our emotive state by displaying if we're paying attention to whom we're speaking to or if our thoughts / attention is drifting off to the canapes or our to-do list. This is a photograph from the East of Ireland Marathon Series Marathon and Half Marathon which was held at Sutton and Howth, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Saturday 23rd November 2013 at 09:00. This was a special charity marathon organised to raise some funds for the vicitms of the Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, which was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record and caused catastrophic destruction in the central Philippines, particularly on Samar Island and Leyte (Tacloban city). According to the United Nations about 11 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless. Over a million houses were damaged. Over 5,000 people (November 20th figures) were killed by the storm or it's aftermath. The marathon was organised by the Filipino Irish (Fil-Irish Runners) who are living and working in Ireland and who are very active participants in the Irish road racing and marathon running scene. The race today showed great solidarity and friendship between all of the runners in the races today with their Filipino friends. The atmosphere at the start was sombre and respectful but it was important that everyone enjoyed the day as this was a wonderful gesture from the East of Ireland marathon running community. Many marathon running friends who couldn't make it today also provided donations to this most worthy of causes. Well done to everyone involved. A day to be very proud of this community of marathon runners in Ireland. The total amount raised was over 2500 euros with proceeds coming directly from today's race and other sources who contributed. The Filipino Irish will ensure that this money will go directly to charities working on the ground with people in the devasted areas of the Philippines. The Filipino Irish also provided a lovely spread of refreshments representing beautiful Filipino confectionary!
This race event was part of the East of Ireland Marathon Series. The East Of Ireland Marathon Series aims to make marathons affordable and convienient for the runners of Ireland. The serires organisers aim to promote marathon running and to make the process as stress free and enjoyable as possible. All courses are measured to full AAI standards and have a minimum of 10 Entrants. The marathons are self sufficent to a degree although there are limited supplies of water available on the day of the race. There will be no extra frills like chip timing and finish gantrys. However all finishing times are accurately and officially recorded. This is to keep the price down and keep the races as affordable as possible. The East of Ireland Marathon series is all inclusive and welcomes runners who are new to marathon running as well as experienced veterans.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: The East of Ireland marathon series stricly limits the number of participants. There were about 50 participants in the race today. There was the option to run 2 loops and finish a half marathon.
Weather: The overnight frost meant that it was a calm but very chilly start to the race. There was some beautiful periods of November sunshine with hardly any breeze. This was particularly welcome as the very tough hills on the course were somewhat more managable without a head wind.
Course: The race is a 4 looped course of Howth head. The loop which is approximately 6.63 miles starts at Sutton cross roads on the Howth Road. The route then proceeds south eastwards along the Greenfield Road following on to the Carrickbrack Road and onwards to the top of Howth Head. The route follows the R105 the whole way around in an anti-clockwise formation. When the route reaches the peak of Howth Head it follows the R105 north along Thormanby Road into Howth Village. When in Howth Village the route follows Harbour Road and then proceeds westwards back to the starting point of the loop. Just before the return to the starting point there is some very severe downhill which is tough on the legs after several miles of climbing.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. These are screenshots taken from a 3D data visualization i realized at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design for the Quantified-Self workshop (ciid.dk/education/summer-school/ciid-summer-school-2013/quantified-self/) with Marius Watz.
The project is called 'Cycles' and is a visualisation of my sleep cycles data (deep phase, light phase, awake phase, heart rate, efficiency...) recorded via an iPhone application.
The way the towers are built (step-by-step) is a metaphor of the data collection process.
Towers collapse because we are traveling through time (time flies so nothing remains permanently).
Colors are selected from a colour pool.
The longest a sleep cycles is, the more the related color will be selected in the color pool.
Those pics were captured while i was simultaneously drawing the path of the particles (the trails) and moving the camera around.
This week I completed a visualisation of Snowtopia, a proposed €100 million leisure and extreme sports centre development at Tyrrelstown, 14 kilometres northwest of Dublin. Crazy detail!

January 2009 to December 2010
It's always satisfying when a bank statement shows you have more money moving into your account than leaving it each month, however I wanted to visualise this activity over a longer period to help me understand my ability to save in more detail. This chart represents two years of data showing my account balance at the end of each day assuming I started on the first day of January with £100. Sharp rises represent pay days and each fall back towards the x-axis shows that I have either spent money on a credit or debit card or made an ATM withdrawal. In both years I made a large withdrawal in the summer, this was to buy a car in 2009 and to pay my tuition fees a year later. I was earning more money in early 2010 however I also made some large purchases. Since enrolling on the MA I have taken a reduction in hours with my employer and so have found it impossible to save as much as I was able to in 2009. Green is associated with money internationally and the layout was chosen to resemble a city skyline which also has strong connotations with this subject.

The S2 Packaging project has been long due an overhaul.
The four leaf clover package is looking a bit tired so we’ve binned it and brought in a new approach to the visualisation of the package.
The pupils are still taught about graphic composition techniques and apart from the planning stages the whole project is realised using digital skills.
As a department we believe that teaching pupils skills in the graphic industry standard software applications is the correct approach. These skills are entirely transferable and the graphic interface will be familiar to them if they choose to progress in the subject through to tertiary level and beyond. Given the results that S2 pupils can now achieve in S2 it is exciting to imagine what they progress to in S5/6.
The concept here is to design the packaging for a new snack product. Basic layout skills are taught and then pupils progress towards realising their ideas in Adobe Illustrator. Vector skills such as typography, basic Bezier path tools, scaling and colour manipulation are taught at this point. At all times pupils must work from their pre-planned thumbnail planning sketches. Upon completion of the front and back panel of the package in Illustrator the artwork is then rotated, cropped, and saved as two jpegs in Photoshop. Two materials are created in Cinema 4D and the bitmap artwork is now added to the texture channel. The materials are then mapped onto a crisp packet mesh that I created in a pre rigged studio environment and rendered as a high resolution file.
As you can see from the pupil photos everyone was pleased with their results! Jay was heard to say, “That was a pretty good lesson.” I think so too.
We spent yesterday at the BBC RAD hackday and decided to visualise the listening data from Radio Pop - 1800 users with 24000 listen "events" from the start of September to now.
This shows all the listening by radio network. Each line represents a network with time on the y-axis, larger blobs mean that more people were listening at that time.
At the time of the photo, while I new about Fiat Ideas, if you'd have asked me to visualise one I'd have not got particularly close. They'd just disappeared from my mind.
HML suggests 3000+ were on the road in 2006.
This visualisation focuses on the huge percentage of the Danish population who have the internet at their disbursal (86%) and then looks at how many of these make use of social networks.
Facebook being by far the most popular social network in Denmark was focused on with more details on the age group and gender divide of the Danes on the networking site.
Since the information used for this visualisation is fairly straight forward, a bubble comparison style was used to emphasise the differences in user numbers.

So I decided to photograph some of the visualisations in Windows Media Centre. Music playing was Clockwork by Deadmau5
I took a picture of our 6 year olds desk in his bedroom and then added it as a background in Autodesk Inventor to show the forklift toy in it's true environment

Photographing carpet mock up installations can be an expensive exercise. By utilising design visualisation technologies (Adobe Photoshop and Sketchup) in combination with small inexpensive samples of carpet, cost savings can be made and photo realistic in situ product imagery can be generated for product design and promotional purposes. This is a stock photograph (not my photography) which I have utilised to insert a different carpet designs. The inserted textures, which were smaller than a square metre, were post processed with Adobe Photoshop to make them a seamless repeat pattern. Photoshop's off-set and high pass filters combined with content aware fill and the clone tool are essentials for this type of post processing. I then used Google Sketchup (now Trimble) to locate the perspective vanishing points in the interior image and to generate a floor plane of the carpet texture repeating into perspective. I also used the existing interior image carpet's shadow and highlight data to make the new carpet textures more photo realistic. I then combined the Sketchup generated imagery and interior photograph in Adobe Photoshop.

The colouring of arcs indicates their P-value from best (blue) to worst (red) and gray for conflicting base pairs. Between the arcs are two covariance blocks representing the same seven sequences in a gapped multiple sequence alignment from RFAM. Unpaired nucleotides are in black and gaps are in gray. For columns at the ends of a single non-conflicting arc, bases are assigned green if they are valid base pairs (G:C, A:U, G:U and the reversed pairings), or else they are red. For the green valid base pairs, if the base pair varies from the most commonly observed base pair in the column, then it is coloured blue to signify co-variation, or compensatory mutations to retain the base-pairing potential of the positions (dark blue for two sided, and light blue for one sided). The colouring of base pairs for arcs gives a qualitative representation of how well the base pair is conserved, and can be used to infer the validity of predicted base pairs, or the quality of an alignment given a known structure. For example, while most of the novel base pairs predicted to exist are simply extensions or slight shifts of known helices, the three largest red helices in the bottom show very high sequence conservation.
ABSTRACT:
Visually examining RNA structures can greatly aid in understanding their potential functional roles and in evaluating the performance of structure prediction algorithms. As many functional roles of RNA structures can already be studied given the secondary structure of the RNA, various methods have been devised for visualizing RNA secondary structures. Most of these methods depict a given RNA secondary structure as a planar graph consisting of base-paired stems interconnected by roundish loops. In this article, we present an alternative method of depicting RNA secondary structure as arc diagrams. This is well suited for structures that are difficult or impossible to represent as planar stem-loop diagrams. Arc diagrams can intuitively display pseudo-knotted structures, as well as transient and alternative structural features. In addition, they facilitate the comparison of known and predicted RNA secondary structures. An added benefit is that structure information can be displayed in conjunction with a corresponding multiple sequence alignments, thereby highlighting structure and primary sequence conservation and variation. We have implemented the visualization algorithm as a web server R-CHIE as well as a corresponding R package called R4RNA, which allows users to run the software locally and across a range of common operating systems.
I created the design for these cat frames (look closely to see cat shapes) and sent them to Shapeways for 3D printing in sparkly alumide.
The pendant visualises EEG attention (red) and meditation (green) data and visualises it on this LED matrix in real time. Using a Mindwave Mobile, Bluetooth dongle and Shrimp microcontroller.
I've built this for use in excruciating social situations such at conferences, networking, bars, etc. I'm interested in extending our emotive state by displaying if we're paying attention to whom we're speaking to or if our thoughts / attention is drifting off to the canapes or our to-do list. These are screenshots taken from a 3D data visualization i realized at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design for the Quantified-Self workshop (ciid.dk/education/summer-school/ciid-summer-school-2013/quantified-self/) with Marius Watz.
The project is called 'Cycles' and is a visualisation of my sleep cycles data (deep phase, light phase, awake phase, heart rate, efficiency...) recorded via an iPhone application.
The way the towers are built (step-by-step) is a metaphor of the data collection process.
Towers collapse because we are traveling through time (time flies so nothing remains permanently).
Colors are selected from a colour pool.
The longest a sleep cycles is, the more the related color will be selected in the color pool.
Those pics were captured while i was simultaneously drawing the path of the particles (the trails) and moving the camera around.
