Trasmigrazione delle anime, a volte chiamato metempsicosi, si basa sull'idea che un'anima può passare su un solo corpo e di soggiornare in un altro (umano o animale) o in un oggetto inanimato. L'idea appare in varie forme nelle culture tribali in molte parti del mondo (ad esempio, l'Africa, Madagascar, Oceania e Sud America). L'idea era familiare nella Grecia antica, in particolare in orfismo, ed è stata adottata in una forma filosofica di Platone e dei Pitagorici. La credenza ha guadagnato un po 'di moneta in forme gnostiche ed occulta del cristianesimo e il giudaismo ed è stato introdotto nel pensiero rinascimentale il recupero dei libri ermetici.
La dottrina più pienamente articolata della trasmigrazione si trova in Induismo. Non compare nelle prime scritture indù (Rig Veda), ma è stato sviluppato in un secondo periodo nelle Upanishad (c. 600 aC). Centrale per la concezione del destino umano dopo la morte è stata la convinzione che gli esseri umani nascono e muoiono più volte. Le anime sono considerati emanazioni dello spirito divino. Ogni anima passa da un corpo all'altro in un ciclo continuo di nascite e morti, la loro condizione in ogni esistenza è determinato dalle loro azioni in vite precedenti.
Così, la trasmigrazione è strettamente intrecciata con il concetto di Karma (azione), che comporta l'inevitabile lavoro fuori, bene o male, di tutte le azioni in un'esistenza futura. L'intera esperienza di vita, sia di felicità o di dolore, è una giusta ricompensa per azioni (buono o cattivo) fatto in precedenti esistenze. Il ciclo del karma e trasmigrazione possono estendere attraverso innumerevoli vite, l'obiettivo finale è il riassorbimento dell'anima nell'oceano della divinità da dove è venuto. Questa unione si verifica quando l'individuo si rende conto della verità circa l'anima e l'Assoluto (Brahman) e l'anima diventa uno con Brahman. Si è spesso erroneamente pensato che il buddismo coinvolge anche trasmigrazione. La dottrina classica buddhista di anatta ("senza anima"), tuttavia, respinge in particolare la vista indù. La posizione Buddista sul funzionamento del karma è estremamente complessa.
L'idea di trasmigrazione è stata diffusa nel mondo occidentale da movimenti quali la Teosofia e dalla proliferazione più recente di culti religiosi orientali. La maggior parte di queste versioni occidentalizzate sembrano mancare il rigore intellettuale e contenuto filosofico della dottrina classica indù.
