Marys Rock Tunnel is the only tunnel on the famous Skyline Drive that traverses the entirety of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The 600 foot tunnel through solid granite was considered quite an engineering feet back in 1932 when it was constructed or bored through. Mary’s Rock is a 3,514 foot mountain just south of Thorton Gap, the eighth highest peak in Shenandoah national park. Twice a day, the workers would drill 40 12 foot deep holes into the tunnels rock face, then the holes were filled with 500 pounds of dynamite and detonated. It took a little more than three months, as they bored from both ends, finding several springs which occasionally still drip through ceiling in winter & spring until they saw daylight. When it was originally built in 1938, Dicky Ridge Lodge was the dining area for visitors that stayed in nearby cabins. Built by the concessionaire company Virginia Skyline Company, it was purchased by the National Parks Department in 1957 and converted to a visitor’s center for Shenandoah National Park. The cabins long gone, but this beautiful fireplace and mantel in this image recall the former splendor, a period prior to plane travel and motor inns when families would vacation closer to home in such lodges and establishments. Clouds fly low over the valley by Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
