Guess the large ornaments are not unique to NYC’s Rockefeller Center as my west coast damsel pointed this one out on Powell Street where adjacent to the cable car tracks. Obviously we were by Union Square in San Francisco.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Interstate 80 traverses and transitions on the Island of Yerba Buena in San Francisco Bay by literally going through the island itself. Completed in 1936, the Yerba Buena Tunnel is 1,791 foot long two double-deck cast-in-place reinforced-concrete T-beam viaducts structure designed by Charles H. Purcell, Chales E. Andrew and Glen B. Woodruff. When built the Yerba Buena Tunnel was the first double deck tunnel in the United States and had the distinction of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest-diameter bore tunnel in the world measuring 76 feet wide by 56 high. In the fifty eighth iteration of the National Football League’s Super Bowl this coming Sunday, San Francisco’s 49er’s face off against Kansas City’s Chief’s. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #lumixlx100ii @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @mpbcom @kehcamera @visit.sf @visitsf @panasonic @lumix @lumixusa #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography

Day 20 image for American Cancer Society Photo a Day Challenge in October to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Sunset by the single tower on the eastern modern suspension bridge of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge which replaced the original seismically unsound cantilever span damaged by the 1989 earthquake that opened in 2013, the most expensive public works project in California’s history.

I’m taking a photo a day in October to help the American Cancer Society fight for a world without cancer. This is a very meaningful cause to me as I am currently monitoring and battling cancer. Enjoyed a marvelous theatrical experience of Disney’s Lion King with my damsel and her sweet granddaughter at this gorgeous venue in San Francisco California, the Orpheum Theater on Market Street in the heart of San Francisco in San Francisco’s Tenderloin area. The Orpheum Theater a magnificent late Spanish Gothic theater that opened in 1926 originally as a showhouse for Vaudeville in San Francisco. It was renovated in 1970, then again in 1998 a major renovation that modified to venue to be able to stage Broadway type productions and is a locally designated San Francisco Landmark. Owned by BroadwaySF Theatrical Production Company which also owns the Golden Gate Theater a few blocks away which is owned by no surprise Robert Nederlander, the Nederlanders owns many of New York City’s Broadway venues. This image of the theater was taken right after the show but what not in the picture for the most part is the sad state of the Tenderloin area in San Francisco, to me having grown up in New York City area in the 1970’s and 1980’s very reminiscent of the general disarray and dismay that we saw in NYC during that era. Though I could draw that parallel, it’s not exactly the same, many business just boarded up with plywood painted black. Very sad as I image it was once a more vibrant area. San Francisco’s NFL 49er’s will square off against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday in Las Vegas in Superbowl 58. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #lumixlx100ii @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @visitsf @visit.sf @broadwaysf @panasonic @lumix @lumixusa #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography

Coming off Interstate 80 coming off the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, looking north in the South of Market District of San Francisco we see the Salesforce Tower rising above all in the center and other glass high-rise towers that populate this part of the City by the Bay that sit just outside the financial district and the Yerba Buena District. The Yerba Buena which in island Spanish where I originate from literally means good grass or weed is the actually where the gold prospectors camps and merchant seamen lived as the oldest neighborhood in San Francisco or actually Yerba Buena settlement which was the name originally given to what would become San Francisco. The translation for the Spaniards was actually good herb that was presented to the Spaniards by the native American San Franciscans who called the herb, yerba buena and then subsequently named the settlement the Yerba Buena. Sunday in Superbowl 58, San Francisco’s 49er’s square off against Kansas City Chiefs for the NFL crown in Las Vegas. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #lumixlx100ii @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @panasonic @lumix @lumixusa @visitsf @visit.sf #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography

A real San Francisco treat is Ghirardelli Square is considered one of the first successful adaptive reuse or repurposing projects in the country, has a history that spans more than a century. William Halprin a landscape architect and William Wurster also an architect began in 1962 to ‘recycle’ the one block location of the neglected Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory Complex on the San Francisco Bay Waterfront into a vibrant shopping area. The famous sign which is what I captured on my iPhone while strolling through San Francisco with my sweet west coast damsel was actually turned around by Halprin so that it faces the waterfront. He designed an elaborate stairway to bring visitors up from the waterfront. The last design element of note which now very common but wasn’t in the late 1950’s early 1960’s was Halprin’s concept of an underground garage under the complex which is now very common place in places like the Boston Commons and Philadelphia’s Independence Park. The conservation and repurposing endeavor predated the National Historic Preservations Act of 1966. iPhone 13 Pro wide 5.7 mm. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #iphone13pro @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @apple @kehcamera @mpbcom @visitcalifornia @visitsf @ghirardellisquare

Tucked into a quiet corner beneath the towering rotunda, this image captures one of the more intimate and overlooked elements of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco—the stepped stone planters and ornamental urn embedded in the curved garden wall. The monumental Beaux-Arts grandeur that defines the site gives way here to a moment of softness and human scale.

Architect Bernard Maybeck’s vision of a romantic ruin, inspired by Greco-Roman forms, extended even to the landscaping details. The giant carved urn echoes classical motifs with its fluted sides and Greek key border, while the staircase of inlaid planter boxes is both decorative and whimsical. Lush plantings spill over their edges, softening the geometry of the structure with seasonal growth.

Despite being located in the bustling Marina District, this area often offers a sense of peace and seclusion. The curved wall acts as a sound buffer, cocooning the visitor in stillness. The greenery flourishes even on a cloudy day, offering a muted palette of dusty greens, spotted yellow leaves, and the gentle burst of blooming magnolias.

The juxtaposition of lush vegetation against weathered stone conveys a timeless quality—nature reclaiming artifice, or perhaps the two existing in perfect balance. Every element reinforces the Palace’s original purpose: to celebrate the interplay of architecture, beauty, and the natural world.

Though millions visit the Palace of Fine Arts each year, few pause to notice this sculptural vignette—a garden moment that bridges ancient inspiration and early 20th-century romanticism.

Framed by the soaring arch of the central rotunda, this image draws you into the romantic classicism of San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts—a grand Beaux-Arts remnant of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Designed by architect Bernard Maybeck, the colonnade was inspired by Roman and Greek ruins, a deliberate choice meant to evoke the fragility and endurance of beauty. Here, the Corinthian columns stretch upward in graceful symmetry, their fluting and capitals crisply defined in the soft morning light.

The urns and sculpted reliefs along the path suggest a serene, dreamlike quality, echoing Maybeck’s original vision of a ruin pulled from antiquity and dropped into the Marina District. The lush greenery that peeks through the colonnade softens the monumentality, offering contrast and scale. Beyond the columns, a glimpse of the Exhibition Hall's green doors adds a subtle pop of color, grounding the classical fantasy in the real and contemporary.

There’s a reverent hush to the scene—no tourists, no distractions—only the rhythm of the circular plaza and the vertical thrust of the architecture. It’s easy to imagine this site used for photo shoots, weddings, or quiet reflection. What once was a temporary exposition structure now stands immortal, restored and loved by generations.

San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts continues to be one of the city’s most photographed and filmed landmarks, from Hitchcock's Vertigo to The Rock and beyond. This image captures not just its aesthetic elegance, but its timeless sense of wonder.

Energy in the moment, it is hard to describe. To be connected, surrounded and absorbed . There is no denying its presence, only being swept by its veracity. I am a tiny thing bathing barefoot here in this immensity, almost like floating with no gravity to speak of. Floating, drifting, absorbing this one unique moment in my life.

San Francisco glowing under a moody sky, captured from Coit Tower with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The skyline never sleeps, and neither does the soul of this city.
