A throwback cityscape image of Kansas City from 2017. I retouched a few areas and lightened up the green grass area revealing the cut lines pointing to downtown. I noticed there was a lone person siting out there in the middle of the field taking in the evening.

Kansas City’s beautiful and elegant Union Station as viewed at from the hill where the World War I Memorial and the Kansas City Skyline. Union Station opened in 1914 when the first train, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Flyer arrived at the station. It has held up well celebrating its 100th year. It’s a beautiful view from up at the monument that I wanted to share with my damsel who actually lived not far from Kansas City years ago and had never been up here. From this view you can see how immense the station is. I had posted an at image at dusk of the northern face of the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts a few weeks ago, this one taken at night also of the northern face show how the lighting on the silvery segmented stainless steel and acid etched limestone colored precast perpendicular concrete walls create an other-worldly look. The Kauffman Center for Performing Arts is actually two venues, a 1600 seat concert venue designed by a collaboration of Moshe Safdie and the eminent Japanese acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota and an 1800 seat horseshoe configured hall for ballet, opera and theater. National historic landmark Union Station in Kansas City Missouri all done up post the Kansas City Chiefs football team Super Bowl win. The Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 on February 12, 2023 and KC celebrated their heroes in a big way! The outside of the historic station was done out in Chiefs Red, including a replica of the Lombardi Trophy. We've had a run of a weeks worth of storms in the midwest. I was heading towards a different location when I looked back and saw the skies and lightning formng in the West and had to head up to this popular point of view to see if I could grab any before they passed. I've never been a storm chaser but shooting this week's worth of storms has opened me a up a little creatively and for that I'm thankful.

Located at 31st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Kansas City Missouri is the Firefighters Fountain and Memorial. At the time I captured this image earlier this year in the late winter, the fountain was not running, however I was able to capture the amazing Tom Corbin bronze sculpture which is in the fountain’s center. The World War I monument and museum in Kansas City Missouri opened in 1926 but the location was dedicated in 1921 with over 200,000 in attendance. Amongst the honored guests were then U.S. vice president Calvin Coolidge & the main Allied commanders of the great war Lieutenant General Baron Jacques of Belgium; General Armando Diaz of Italy; Marshal Ferdinand Foch of France; General John J. Pershing of the United States; and Admiral Lord David Beatty of Great Britain. As luck or fate depending on how you roll would have it this particular dedication ceremony would be attended by not one but two future United States President, the first being the sitting vice president Calvin Coolidge and the second a Kanas City Haberdasher a WWI veteran hailing from the Kansas City suburb of Independence who was chosen to present the flags to Allied commanders Harry S. The War to End All Wars is how World War I was often referred to, I image when the World War I Memorial opened in 1926 that everyone who was there including US President Calvin Coolidge genuinely believed that, not knowing that a Second World War would occur is what really was a short time span afterwards. Regardless the WW I Memorial and Museum perched on a hill above Kansas Cities Historic Union Station overlooking the Kansas City Missouri skyline is a marvelous structure. This view with the dusk skies I was able to capture while capturing images of the skyline because my ever vigilant sweet damsel spotted the wonderful contrast of the lighted monument against the sky of dusk. My sweet lady has a wonderful photographic eye and for that & many many other wonderful things I feel fortunate and blessed to have her in my life. Something that hadn’t been there in my prior trips to Kansas City in 2007 was the KC Streetcars, which features free streetcars that travel throughout downtown Kansas City. The construction began in 2014 and the first KC Streetcars began service in 2016. The operator is the Kansas City Streetcar Authority. I captured this very colorfully adorned KC Streetcar by Union Station stop while photographing Union Station as it is a terminus currently. This streetcar in fact was done out in Kansas City Chiefs world champs logos. Taken a few months back at the start of the season when hopes were high. Now as we our just a few games away from the close of the season the city has definitely turned RED. Here's to hoping they can close out the season strong and get a playoff bye week and get some home field advantage.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've photographed a spot with the same composition and yet came away with something completely different. One can never really tell how the light will fall on your subject matter. The Power and Light District comes alive when the sun goes down.

The first time I drove into downtown KC in 2007 and I saw these 4 structures by the Kansas City Convention center, I wondered because of the cables attached to them if they were some support structures for a bridge or something of the sort. I noticed the tops were different on each one which perplexed me even more. While stuck in Kansas City during a weekend before Spring this year 2023 when snow in Northern California made it precipitous to travel back home to Northern Cal, I did some meandering around the area of the convention center and KC Power and Light District, I found out more. The four 300-foot-tall concrete pylons are actually pedestals for four massive stainless steel & aluminum 1930’s style Art Deco sculptures created by artist R.M. Fischer that are perched upon each. The location incidentally is atop the intersection of three major highways. A collaboration of artist R.M. Fischer and Zahner, the installation of the sculptures was done in 1994, the 300’ pylons being stood up first, and the then when Fischer had completed the sculptures, each massive sculpture was lowered onto each pylon using a heavy-duty helicopter, a Sikorsky S-64 sky crane that was designed & engineered for heavy lifting. The One Light apartment tower in downtown Kansas City Missouri had it top of tower marquee in the colors of the rainbow in celebration of Pride this month. The elegant and classic Art Deco interior ceiling of Kansas City’s Union Station’s Grand Hall that opened in 1914. Throughout the Second World War Union Station was the scene of emotional farewells as members of the arms services departed for war or tearful welcome home reunions for the same. Evening decends on downtown Kansas City, Missouri. I've scouted out this location several times in the day and have always wanted to get it just right. This point of view must be taken during the winter months because there is a big brush of trees directly in front of the lower part of the viewing frame.
A special shout out to David Arbogast who has an amazing image of this same scene. His was an inspiration which led to my own capture.

A few good elements here in this image. One, I was pretty happy finding this little nook that I've never noticed before. The Sun shining through the clouds and hitting the ledge was another added bonus but after all was said and done I was drawn to the puddle of water that was left behind. We've had so much rain lately and there seems no end in sight.

The Cliff Drive Waterfall in Kansas City, Missouri. Cliff Drive is a recreational area for joggers and bikers to be able to enjoy an area close to downtown with spectacular views of the city and one that is mostly free of automobiles. I’ve been trying to get a good image of this waterfall for what seems like a long time now. I invested in a 10 stop ND filter this year and have been using for it water fountains and river images (I forget to use it at the ocean this summer! ugh). I thought it worked really well for this image.

The top of the World War I Liberty Memorial in Kansas City Missouri were two of the four Guardian Spirits carved by Robert Aitken, each 40 feet tall. My many trips to Kansas City since 2007 had been during the winter or early spring, so I had never seen water in the many fountains of the ‘City of Fountains’ for the most part and in my visits to the Liberty Memorial I had never seen any water in the Liberty Memorial Fountain located just south of the entrance to the National World War I Museum. I finally got to see and hear water in that fountain and was able to capture this image at dusk. The three tiered fountain is made of black granite and Indiana limestone designed by ASAI Architects. Known as the city of fountains Kansas City Missouri has over 200 public fountains throughout the city. This particular fountain in the image is the Muse of Missouri which features three pools right on Main Street. It actually officially known as David Woods Kemper Fountain as it was donated to Kansas City by David’s parents Mr and Mrs James Kemper Sr. for their son Lieutenant David Woods Kemper who perished when he led his platoon against the German forces in Italy during the Second World War. The historically significant City Market in Kansas City Missouri has ties that go back to 1857, it was a central location for trading, commerce, horse trading, political rallies, church revivals, medicine show and even circuses. It is considered Kansas City’s oldest continuously-operating business, basically in the same location in close proximity to the Missouri River. The city leased the property to Jacob and Fred Scheibel for $50 a year, it quickly expanded to become a major trading post for those who were westward bound. In the early Twentieth Century during the 1920’s, the market area grew to house Kansas City’s City Hall, two newspapers and the county courthouse. Further renovations came as a result of FDR’s New Deal post the depression in 1930’s in the 1970’s bars, restaurants and other establishments have expanded the scope of what is offered though changing carousel of the ever growing city has seen City Hall in its new location further east and exodus of other entities. I frequented the City Market several times day & night during the multiple business trips in the area in 2023 and the evening this image was captured, I was accompanied by my west coast damsel who was also there for business purposes. Located in the Power & Light District in downtown Kansas City Missouri is the Kansas City Live venue which is an whole city block with two levels of world-class eateries, taverns & night spots and a stage area in its center which is what is pictured here. Opening in 1921 the 3,000 seat Mainstreet Theatre was a design of the Chicago firm Rapp & Rapp and was the only theater in Kansas City Missouri designed by the famous firm. The stylish exterior is a blend of Neo-Classical and French Empire styles accented a dome encircled by circular windows that top the lobby. Another first for the Mainstreet Theater was it was the first in Kansas City to contain a nursery for parents attending shows. A subterranean tunnel connected the Mainstreet Theater to the nearby President Hotel and the basement & sub-basement was spacious to contain cages used for vaudeville shows that used live animals. Cages large enough for elephants fit and pools for seals. There was an elevator large enough to transport elephants up to the stage area. In 1924 a beautiful Kimball 3 manual 10 ranks theater organ was installed and that remained & was in use until 1961 when a dispute with the Musicians Union basically forced management to remove the organ. The beautiful theater was doomed for demolition by an owner who faced stiff grassroots resistance by local Kansas City preservationist who prevailed and in 2006 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (thought that is not always a deterrent for developers with enough money & influence). The Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet in 2020, Alamo Drafthouse declared bankruptcy in 2021 & declared it would closed permanently. B&B Theater chain came to rescue and reopen it in fall 2021 which is why in the image you see the B&B. In this image the entrance of the Kansas City Missouri venue, the T-Mobile Center located adjacent to the Power and Light District with its distinctive neon pink lighting and in the background to the left is the beautiful Kanas City Art Deco City Hall lit up in red that night. The T-Mobile Center which was formerly The Sprint Center until 2020 when T-Mobile acquired Sprint opened in 2007 as a modern 19,000 + seat venue replacing much of the activities of the Kemper Center which had a similar seating capacity which was opened in 1974 and has since been converted to Hy-Vee Arena for youth sports. Even though this image only shows a small portion of the edifice, its entire façade is glass, 13,000 square meters of double insulated glass to be precise. Located on Broadway in Kansas City Missouri in a building that started life in 1911 as the Fitzpatrick Saloon is the beautiful Majestic Restaurant and Jazz Club. When it opened in 1911, it featured a saloon on the first floor where this image was taken that today is the lovely restaurant, and a bordello on the upper floors.
