A re-imagined photo from a NATGEO Expedition photo shoot in San Francisco, using only the camera on our smart phones. This was 2014 using my Samsung Galaxy S6.
Spanning the deep canyon carved by the Bixby Creek that is 260 feet above its bottom is the Bixby Bridge on Highway 1 at Big Sur California. An aesthetically pleasing and picturesque reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge with thoughtful architecture in a very scenic location that opened in 1932 before the Highway 1 in the area was finished. In fact it would take 5 years after the bridge’s completion before the connection between Carmel and San Luis Obispo was completed. Truly a beautiful drive the Pacific Coast Highway. The marine layer that had literally followed us up the coast from San Simeon that morning can be seen in this image as it obscures the canyon and ocean in this image.

Our neighborhood doe stares back at me as a fire away a few frames as she and her two fawns munch away on our neighbors vegetation. Have observed this doe and her two fawns most of the summer, she and her two little ones bedding in our back yard sometimes. On the return trip from Oregon, my west coast damsel once crossing into California paused in town of Weed to get some image of the beautiful snow capped Mount Shasta. Ice capped Mount Shasta at 14,179 feet is actually a potentially active volcano that last erupted about 1250 AD according to geological observations. My damsel and I were perplexed by the amount of gulls which were in the vicinity which are normally seafarers at this elevation as Weed is at over 5,000 feet and no where near water. In this image of Mount Shasta the are a pair that flew into my field of view.

A classic piece of Americana, a true classic at this years Grass Valley Fly-In and Open House held at Nevada County Airport annually, as part of the event 3 different local auto organizations participated but this beautiful 1968 Pontiac Firebird was not amongst them but rather outside parked on the street, absolutely gorgeously restored, so I snapped a few frames. Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams were so interwoven into American culture that was epitomized in movies like Smokey and the Bandit and television series like Knight Rider both that featured black Trans Ams as a prominent part of their respective tales. Empire Mines California State Park preserves was once was the once one of the olderst,richest, longest and deepest Gold Mines in California, nestled in the western Seirra Nevadas in Grass Valley. In 1969 William Bowers Bourn, Sr. purchased controling interest of Empire Mine and it would remain in the Bourn family until 1929. Empire Mines actually operated from 1850 to 1956. In this image is what once was a working mineshaft at it's surface entryway. I took this image when my west coast damsel's eldest little granddaughter urged her dad to take her in to see the mine. The pitch of the shaft is amazingly steep.

During the summer at Mel’s Diner in Auburn California, they have a weekly classic car gatherings. My damsel and I stopped at Mel’s last week for a bite to eat and lo and behold the classic beauties were there. Did not spend a great deal of time checking out the lovely automobiles but saw this gem, a 1956-57 first generation Chevrolet Corvette. Visiting Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, CA during COVID. I had to reserve a time slot two weeks in advance. I walked with my old Minolta 201 and shot Ilford 100 BNW film. Bought a Plustek 8100 35mm scanner. Really slowed down my process, but I like the results. It's all therapy anyway at this point. :-)
While at Donner Pass, I pivoted and got this lovely image of the sun over the snow covered terrain after my sweet damsel captured an image on her phone and inspired me to take this one. My sweet lady has an amazing eye for images. California’s majestic and amazing Sierra Nevada Mountain Range which literally translated means snow covered mountains that for many would be gold prospector coming from back east was the last big obstacle to reach California Gold Country. My damsel and I venture up in elevation as while we were pelted by the atmospheric river in higher elevations that precipitation became snow. Another image captured a few days back of the fog from our rear deck as it rose as the sun started to warm the water saturated trees and soil from the latest round of atmospheric rivers that have doused California relentlessly in 2023. On the day of the Nevada City Camera Club evening photo walk during 2023 photography month, my west coast damsel and I strolled through Nevada City prior to heading down to the established meeting place. My damsel and her wonder photographic observant eye saw the rising moon and cross of St Canice Catholic Church at one of the high points within the confines of Nevada City. St Canice Catholic Church was established in 1867 when Father James Claire become the congregations first pastor, prior to that it was a mission of the Grass Valley Catholic Church. Located in San Francisco’s amazing Golden Gate Park is the fascinating Japanese Tea Garden which were part of the 1894 Japanese Village exhibit of the California Midwinter International Exposition. At the expositions end a Japanese gentleman Mr Makoto Hagiwara who was a Japanese landscape architect made a gentleman’s agreement with park superintendent to create a Japanese Tea Garden permanently as a gift for posterity. Always been fascinated by aging signage as it points to vestiges of the past. This sign which at one point was a Packard Automobile Dealership sign in downtown Grass Valley and today has been repurposed as the placard for a flooring retailer. Packard was an American luxury automobile brand that was started in Detroit Michigan in 1899 and rolled its last vehicle off it assembly line in Indiana in 1958.

As the sun began setting on the horizon the warm tones began to mix with the still blue sky, the silhouette of the steeple and cross of the Newcastle United Methodist Church in Northern California. Located within Lassen Volcanic National Park at 8,714 feet of altitude is Reading Peak which actually is small plug dome volcano located about 2.5 miles from Mount Lassen in Shasta County in California. Mount Lassen for whom the national park was named last erupted in the early Twentieth Century. A week ago Friday morning in the morning as opposed to the next days image I posted earlier in the week which was from Saturday afternoon. The smoke from the the Mosquito Fire basically gave the sky a totally apocalyptic orange cast on the sun which is what this image is. Not sunset but at 10 am in the morning, it was a sunny day but the smoke of the Mosquito Fire basically created an orange overcast in sky, something I’ve never experienced nor witnessed before. Today while in Colfax we could see a new plume from the same fire as prevalent winds fanned the blaze, which now is at over 73,000 acres and at 21% containment. One evening as we were heading over to see my sweet west coast damsel’s dear folks, after a fall rain this past November, the rain had cleared the haze in the skies and we both caught of glimpse of the Sutter Buttes on the horizon. I had my Tamrac bag with my MFT camera gear in tow, so my west coast damsel made a detour and took us to a vantage pointe where I might capture some shots to the west where the range was. In this photo, the peaks of the Sutter Buttes dominate coming out of a layer of lower hanging clouds, smaller foothills enveloped in clouds, the silhouette of the coastal mountain range with the relatively flat Sacramento Valley in the foreground. This image was one of the better ones of the Sutter Buttes which are affectionately known as the world’s smallest mountain range, though many geologists don’t consider these remnants of a dormant volcano technically a true mountain range. When my west coast damsel had mentioned the Sutter Buttes to me several years back when she was showing me images from her son’s weddings, I knew little about them, but did some reading obviously after capturing the images of these peaks that lie in the northern most part of the Sacramento Valley. Prior to the damns, levees and irrigation, the Sacramento Valley was flooded for the most part during rainy periods in the years and the indigenous natives sought the high grounds of Histum Yani, the name the Maidu Indians gave to the range.

My bout with influenza upon my return home to Northern California definitely put a damper on our holidays, but fortunately my damsel and I went up to downtown Grass Valley to the Cornish Christmas. Cornish in Grass Valley California? Yes at one point 75% of the population in Grass Valley was from Cornwall England, Cornish miners and their families followed the mining opportunities in Grass Valley between 1860-1895. The Christmas Tree at Union Square in San Francisco was actually first stood up in the 1920’s but not consistently. It wasn’t until 1990 when Macy’s which is an the east end of Union Square made it a permanent holiday fixture in the city by bay. So my west coast damsel and I made our way through the holiday crowds which probably were close to pre-COVID-19 levels so that I could snap off a few frames of the beautiful very artificial tree.

Located in San Diego California’s Balboa Park which itself is enormous is the The House of Hospitality as seen in this image. Balboa Park’s 1200 acres dwarfs New York City’s Central Park and Chicago Millennium Park combined. The House of Hospitality constructed as a temporary building for the Panama-California Exposition in 1915 under the supervision of Exposition architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue as the Foreign Arts Building. As the rest of the Exposition it was never meant to be standing for long term, it was repurposed in 1935 as the House of Hospitality for the California Pacific Exposition when it was remodeled by Richard Requa. In the 1990’s the original was torn down because of severe structural integrity issues. The city of San Diego & the Balboa Park Conservancy hired the firm of Heritage Architecture and Planning to rebuild it, using original plans & drawings but adding modern amenities such as HVAC and fire sprinklers. Downtown Grass Valley California in the heart of what is gold rush country, home of the wealthiest gold mine in the USA is a small town the embraces it heritage trying to keep much of it town as authentic. They carefully repurpose the historic builds such as this one in this image for retail establishments. One night the week before last week’s lunar eclipse, as I was closing the curtains I saw a marvelous reflection on the hood of the car, it was the waxing gibbous moon, particularly clear that night , so before going to bed as my west coast damsel was already asleep, I grabbed my camera, a long telephoto lens and my trusty Bogen tripod and shot of several frames. This was my favorite, little or no haze a rarity.
