You won't regret it....

Justizpalast in Munich (Germany) or in translation “Palace of Justice” has a special meaning for me as a photographer. When we visited Munich – the capital of Bavaria, it was one of the first sights which I wanted to shoot photo of. Any idea why?

Justizpalast is today a home for the Bavarian Department of Justice and the District Court I of Munich. It’s one of the courts where I fight for my rights against companies who steal my photos. And so far things didn’t go there so bad…

Blutenburg Castle (Schloss Blutenburg in German) is an ducal country seat in the west of Munich. The castle was built for Duke Albert III, Duke of Bavaria in 1438–39 as a hunting-lodge, replacing an older castle. I spent quite a lot of time nearby as a kid, so couldn't pass by the opportunity to take a few shots when I visited Munich last autumn.

5:35h Munich is still sleeping and this perspective is an illusion of a city lying directly at the alps.

When I first visited Munich long time ago - I was really dissappointed and asked - where are the mountains? On postcards you often see onion towers of the dome directly in front of the mountains. But this is only possible from a few viewpoints with a tele lens and the Foehn - a type of dry, relatively warm, downslope wind that occurs in the lee (downwind side) of the mountain range - in this case the alps.

Hofbräuhaus on Platzl, designed in Neo-Renaissance architectural style (1896), is a three-floor beer hall dating to the sixteenth-century, and one of the most well-known Munich institutions. @visit_munich

The aircraft was again seen here on 12 June 1980 as 5A-DGE with United African Airlines still wearing the Transvalair cheatline. Survived derelict at Tripoli until the mid 2000s as one of the last CL-44 airframes but then disappeared.

I visited Munich's BMW Museum to test my new Fuji X-Pro2 camera. I found this marvellous vintage BMW roadster, and initially wanted to use it as a test target for camera noise tests. In fact, I found that the matt paint of this car has a very subtle surface structure which can mask the camera's high ISO noise pattern, so I'm posting the shots here just for your enjoyment.

This shot is a slightly processed and cropped JPG file.

All these car shots are available in original size at their native resolution.

The slide was dated September 1976, and I had noted an ONA DC-8 with basic Korean colours at Riem on 8 September 1976 - probably the date of this shot. N8635 had also visited the airport in the same colour scheme on 6 June 1976.

This DC-8 had been returned from a three-years lease to Korean Airlines one year before, and still showed the Korean colours when it visited Munich. The aircraft crashed in March 1977 on approach to Niamey. (Stephan Barth on airhistory.net)

It's not like I don't have a lot of new images, but I found some old ones I'd like to share. This one is approx two years old and remindes me of wonderful hours in the english garden of munich.

Last week I visited munich again, but unfortunately did not have the chance to take some pictures.

Missed chance for this beautiful city.

My second encounter at this late afternoon is the girlfriend of Nastya. Together they visit Munich. Both took photos of themselves and the city, they were relaxed

and not at all in a hurry. Everything good conditions to get the opportunity for a conversation and a few photos.

I introduced myself and also my concern. Without hesitation Nastya and Alena agreed.

It did not took long time to take the photos. Alena was satisfied with the result. She told me, that she also comes from Belarus. Alena is 20 years old and studies Chinese and Chinese culture. Together with Nastya she's having holidays here in Munich. Alena describes herself as curious, ambitious and kind. Her advice and motto: Take all opportunities to develop yourself further.

Of course I gave Nastya and Alina my card and explained where later the pictures will be shown.

It was a small but relaxed photo session, for which I am grateful. Good luck for the future and in this demanding studies. All the best, Alena.

Information from airhistory.net - thanks to Stephan Barth:

The sole MS.760C Paris III, first flown in February 1964, visited Munich Riem in new Aerospatiale house colours in 1972; it wore a green colour scheme in its first years of operation. Here it is seen in its third colour scheme. Retired by its last operator Euralair around 1990, many years of storage followed at Le Bourget and at Reims. In September 2019, the aircraft was transferred to Tarbes / Lourdes, refurbished, and has since been displayed there.

Additional information from flickr - thanks to Rob Finch:

The Paris was a French built military liaison and communications jet transport widely used by their Air Force and Navy and also sold to both Argentina and Brazil.

This one with c/n 1 was the sole-six seater version - a company funded development of the basic four-seat design built to try and break-in to the lucrative Executive-jet market.

This Transvalair CL-44 visited Munich-Riem a number of times in 1978 (I have reports for 16 March, 30 April, 4 May, 9 July, 23 October). The aircraft was again seen here on 12 June 1980 as 5A-DGE with United African Airlines still wearing the Transvalair cheatline. Survived derelict at Tripoli until the mid 2000s as one of the last CL-44 airframes but then disappeared.

Aerospatiale

Information from airhistory.net - thanks to Stephan Barth:

The sole MS.760C Paris III, first flown in February 1964, visited Munich Riem in new Aerospatiale house colours in 1972; it wore a green colour scheme in its first years of operation.

Uni-Air

Still wearing an Air Polynésie colour scheme, F-GGPN visited Munich on a flight for its new operator Uni Air. Nearly ten years after this visit, the aircraft was sold to Ecuador as HC-BXC. It flew for Austro Aero and was retired at Cuenca after a few years - and is probably still existant, it was last seen there in derelict condition in 2021. (Source: Stephan Barth on airhistory.net)

The Viscount behind is Hot Air’s G-BAPF.

This FH-227B started out as N7813M with Mohawk Airlines in February 1967 and was later operated by Allegheny Airlines. Pan Adria Airways / Aero Servis / Transadria used it as YU-ALD between November 1974 and January 1980, Air Polynésie / Air Tahiti as F-ODMR between May 1980 and April 1988 when it went on to Uni-Air as F-GGPN. The final operator was Ecuador’s Austro Aéreo from May 1997. Since that airline’s demise the impounded Fairchild rested in a parking lot next to Mariscal La Mar Airport in Cuenca. (Sources: scramble.nl, airhistory.net). The most recent photo I found is from October 2013.

Glasgow Corporation Alexander (H44/34F) Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 DGE 321C fleet number LA284 (new December 1965). I won this slide on eBay six years and paid £20, the seller described that the image was taken when the bus was new. I always thought that LA284 was photographed many years later at an open day. Following me posting this image two Flickr members who follow me, have kindly supplied additional information. LA284 visited Munich at the end of 1965, which is the location, the giveaway is Munich on the destination display, also note the illuminated BOAC VC10 advert. They have also advised me that it is a very rare image to have in a collection. I would like to thank preselected and Mark Evans for their help and advice.

BMW Headquarters (German: BMW-Vierzylinder "BMW four-cylinder"; also BMW Tower) is a Munich landmark, which has been serving as world headquarters for the Bavarian automaker for over 30 years. The building was declared historical in 1999. An extensive remodel commenced in 2004 and was completed in 2006.

The Tower was built between 1968 and 1972 and was ready just in time for 1972 Summer Olympics. Its inauguration followed on 18 May 1973. The building stands 101 m (roughly 331 feet) tall, is located in direct proximity of the Olympic Village and is often mentioned as one of the most notable examples of architecture in Munich. The large cathedral exterior is supposed to mimic the shape of a tire in a race car, with the garage representing the cylinder head. Both buildings were designed by the Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer.

The main tower consists of four vertical cylinders standing next to and across from each other. Each cylinder is divided horizontally in its center by a mold in the facade. Notably, these cylinders do not stand on the ground, they are suspended on a central support tower. During the construction, individual floors were assembled on the ground and then elevated. The tower has a diameter of 52.30 meters (roughly 171 feet). The building has 22 occupied floors, two of which are basements and 18 serve as office space. Millions of dollars have been spent on the facility due to high demand in progression.

In September 1937, Benito Mussolini visited Berlin as part of a state visit to Germany, where he met with Adolf Hitler and other NSDAP leaders. During his visit, Mussolini attended a military parade in Berlin and also visited Munich, where he met with Hitler and other prominent members of the NSDAP. The visit was marked by large parades and military displays intended to impress the Italian leader, and it was attended by a million people at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. This visit was significant as it demonstrated the strengthening alliance between National Socialist Germany and Fascist Italy, which had formed the so-called Berlin-Rome Axis.

United States Air Force

62-4473 was noted at Riem on 28 March 1976 (probably the precise date for this shot) along with an assortment of other US Air Force/Navy/Marine planes including VC-188A 53-3303, Convair C-131F 141011, US Marine Corps Douglas C-9B II 160046 and USAF Sabreliners 61-0679 and 62-4469.

Information from airhistory.net - thanks to Stephan Barth:

24473 was based at Ramstein AFB when it visited Munich-Riem in 1976. Later, after a final assignment in Japan, it was seen at AMARC in 1989, wfu. It was cut into pieces, and the nose section was donated to a museum in East St. Louis, MO.

Background information on 62-4473 from a post on Airport-Data.com Forum (April 2010):

I was a flying crew chief on North American Rockwell T-39A 62-4473 from 1974–1977 at Ramstein AB, Germany. I have been trying to find out what happened to her for some time now until I happened upon Glenn Chatfield’s pictures posted on this site.

62-4473 was an amazing plane. She was originally the backup for Brig. General Richard Ellis’ plane (62-4462) who was the Commander in Chief Air Forces Europe, USAFE, at the time. 62-4462 began having recurring mechanical problems and 62-4473 was brought up as the primary. She was the first plane of our 12 T-39’s to make over 100 on time takeoffs, with no aborts.

In 1975 we did a major overhaul. We gutted her and put in new carpet, high back seats, headliners, wet bar with stereo, along with a cockpit overhaul. The gauges were removed and a flat black wrinkle paint was applied on the dash and new gauges installed. The landing gears, wheel wells, and exterior paint were redone. She was really beautiful when she came out of the hanger.

She flew all over Europe and Africa during those years transporting many dignitaries including the Secretary of Treasury, Congressmen, Representatives, and high ranking officers of all branches.

In October 1977, I rotated back to the states to Seymour Johnson AFB, NC a week later 62-4473 left Germany for Scott AFB, IL. The last time I saw her was in 1980 on the transient ramp at Seymour. I rushed out to see her but by the time I got there she was taxing away.

I left active duty in 1980 then joined the Air National Guard in 1990 and for the next 18 years I was a crew chief on C-130 aircraft, but my time on the T-39 was the best of my career.

....then three come along together.

When I was at Frankfurt in 2012, these three Jumbos were towed over from the long term parking area (by the old USAF base) to the terminal in preparedness for their flights to the Far East.

All these are of the -400 version and all three airlines still operate the Jumbo. Thai still have some of this variant but they are no longer scheduled to visit London or Frankfurt - it seems they still visit Munich though.

Behind is one of Air China - three are apparently still in service, but the airline also has a number of the 'new' -8 version.

Last but not least we have a Cathay Pacific example. Again, they have chosen the -8 version, but only in freighter configuration. They no longer have any passenger Jumbos.
