View from the Sedrun multi functional station inside the Gotthard base tunnel.
The exit of the tunnel in this direction is 20 km away, in the other direction it is even 37 km away.
By chance I had the opportunity to visit the tunnel through the SBB gottardino program. Once the tunnel goes into full operation in December 2016, it will no longer be possible for the public to have such a close look.
The mountain range known around here as the Crazies is prominent in this image (All those very, very tiny black dots scattered around the hills in the mid-ground are black angus cattle grazing on prime Montana range land…). The highest point in this range is Crazy Peak at over 11,000 feet — these mountains dominate their surroundings and are plainly visible just north of Interstate 90 as you travel between Billings and Bozeman.
The name Crazy Mountains is said to be a shortened form of the name "Crazy Woman Mountains" given them, in recognition of their original Crow native american name, after a woman who went insane and lived in them after her family was killed in the westward settlement movement.
The Crow people called the mountains Awaxaawapìa Pìa, roughly translated as "Ominous Mountains", or even rougher and less accurately, "Crazy Mountains". They were famous to the Crow people for having metaphysical powers and being unpredictable—a place often used for vision quests...

One time, there is this lake
and uh, it was right outside of town.
We used to go fishin' and swimmin' and canoein' in it, and uh
[sniffle] this one November this flock o'ducks came in and landed on that lake,
and uh the temperature dropped so fast that the lake froze right there
and then the ducks, they flew off ya see
[voice breaking] and took the lake with them [small sob]
...and uh, now they say that lake is over in Georgia...
imagin' that. [sobs and starts to cry]

Day fourteen of lock-down in the UK
Our daily walk today was a round trip to the supermarket to pick up a few basics and to take in the glories of the blossom trees on one of our local roads.
