Stranded on the beach at Berrow, just along from Somerset’s Burnham on Sea, lies the weathered remains of the SS Nornen, a Norwegian barque which ran aground in 1897 after being caught in a gale in the Bristol Channel.

Only visible when the tide goes out, its pretty amazing there is this much of the boat still in one piece after so many years of being totally submerged for large parts of each and every day.

Wire fence found on my snowy outing a few days ago. Someone must have tied red plastic bits to it to make it more visible. I am sure they were bigger originally but have withered away.

Have a great weekend everyone!

DESCRIPTION:

When we take a picture during a sunset , usually we are attracted by the bright colors we see in the west and rarely point the camera in the opposite direction, towards the east. Yet, if the condition are favorable (clear and transparent sky ) the show we would see would be just as beautiful. This photo, taken by Acireale, a city of Sicily located on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea , wants to be a testimony. The color element that dominates and characterizes it is the pink band extended for about 20 degrees above the horizon, known as “ the belt of Venus”.

The belt of Venus is an atmospheric phenomenon due to backscattering of the red sunlight at sunset by the particles of the atmosphere that are on the opposite side of the sun.

Near the horizon, due to the shadow projected by the Earth, the belt progressively decreases in brightness and color until it disappears completely.

The phenomenon lasts a few minutes and is visible even at down, just before sunrise.

From Wikipedia:

Cloud Gate is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Sir Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed The Bean because of its shape, a name Kapoor initially disliked, but later grew fond of. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet (10 by 20 by 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (100 t; 98 long tons).

Just before sunrise the fog starts to thicken so much that no buildings were visible half an hour later.

A bird of our grasslands, uplands and saltmarshes, the streaky, brown and pink-legged Meadow Pipit is easy to overlook.

The Meadow Pipit is a very common bird found across Britain & Ireland in our wilder places. It is at its most obvious during the summer when it delivers its song in a long parachuting descent. During the winter months, some of our breeding birds leave the UK for southern Europe and North Africa and in the autumn it is amongst our most visible diurnal migrants. At this time flocks of birds, thousands strong comprised of British and northern European Meadow Pipits, head south over migration watchpoints. Some Meadow Pipits that breed elsewhere in Europe also spend their winters in Britain & Ireland.

Meadow Pipits typically produce two clutches a year. Their breeding numbers have steadily declined in the UK since the mid-1970s for reasons that are not fully understood.

This Milky Way photo was taken close to a popular beach with hundreds of visitors and cars by day and yet having an excellent night sky after the onset of astronomical twilight. The foreground was illuminated by the rotating lighthouse beam a few hundred meters away, thus providing a means of light painting of the scene.

Some of the most beautiful stories of ancient times refer to the silvery band of the Milky Way - a celestial river comprised by the light of billions of stars, that has traveled for thousands of years to reach our eyes. This majestic arc of light is more clearly visible on summer nights, when our gaze is towards the center of the Milky Way, which lies at about 25 thousand light years away - the brightest part of the band just above the tree and to left of the “Dark Horse” silhouette.

This band is bisected by obscuring clouds of interstellar dust, thus forming the “Great Galactic Rift”. The interstellar gas and dust gave birth to everything else in the Universe, including us - we are all made of stardust after all.

My deepest thanks and warmest wishes to everyone for 2025 - stay healthy and keep looking up!

Most welcome, after a week plus in which it was obscured by unhealthy wildfire smoke.

A Caribbean reef octopus (Octopus briareus), sighted on a night dive (you don't see them during the day) in a massive rope sponge (more on that below).

They usually disappear into some crack or crevice the moment after they see your dive light. This one was found at the top of a huge rope sponge and stayed visible for some time, allowing me to capture many images. It was hard to decide which one to post!

Here, the octopus is in its iridescent blue. When it hunts it wraps itself around an object, like a blanket or tent, and instantly turns white with brownish-red spots. Its ability to change color, and to do it so quickly, is nothing short of magical.

I think the octopus is clinging to a row pore rope sponge (Aplysina Cauliformis). You can't tell from this image, but this is a a huge specimen, covering something like an area of 4m x 3m and 2-3m high. At night we generally find 20+ trumpetfish tucked in it for their evening protection.

In this photo, we can see the ruins of the castle of the walled city of Calatañazor, in the province of Soria, autonomous region of Castile and León, Spain.

Located in the westernmost part of this walled city, the castle was the penultimate defensive stronghold.

The tower seen almost in the center of the photo was the last stronghold of the entire defensive system, where the last survivors of a possible offensive attack would take refuge.

It is called the "keep tower."

Weapons, supplies, and water were stored in this tower to survive a possible siege.

The water was stored in a cistern located at the bottom of the tower, which has a huge opening in that area due to the ruins of the tower walls.

Halfway up the tower, the access door to the tower can be seen. It is not a window: it is the only access door.

The access door was placed at that height to make it difficult to access the tower in the event of an attack.

Under "normal" circumstances, this access door to the tower was reached by a wooden staircase.

In the event of an attack, this staircase was destroyed by the defenders themselves, making access much more difficult.

At the top of the tower, it is clearly visible that it has been rebuilt with reinforced concrete, so that tourists can climb up and enjoy beautiful views of the entire valley, known as the "Valley of Blood," where the battle in which the Caliph's leader Almanzor was mortally wounded "supposedly" took place. But that belongs to legend.

The car park for British Rail staff at the former station contains a classic combination of cars mostly from the 1990s. Non-domestic cars include a couple of Peugeots, a BMW and a white Fiat Uno. However, Ford products dominate. As well as the inevitable British Rail Ford Escort van, a Sierra, an Escort, a Mondeo, a Granada and a Cortina are visible. Pride of place goes to what looks like an early 1970s Ford Zephyr Mark IV.
