Two beautiful young ladies grace the float of this years Songkran Festival parade in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Wikipedia: Thai New Year or Songkran, also known as Songkran Festival, Songkran Splendours, is the Thai New Year's national holiday. Songkran is on 13 April every year, but the holiday period extends from 14 to 15 April. In 2018 the Thai cabinet extended the festival nationwide to seven days, 9–16 April, to enable citizens to travel home for the holiday.
Keeping with the Theravada Buddhist calendar it also coincides with New Year in the Hindu calendar such as Vishu, Bihu, Pohela Boishakh, Pana Sankranti, Vaisakhi. The New Year takes place at around the same time as the new year celebrations of many regions of South Asia like China (Dai people of Yunnan Province), India, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Vishu (Malayalam: വിഷു, Tulu: Bisu) is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala, Tulu Nadu region in Karnataka, Mahé district of Union Territory of Pondicherry, neighbouring areas of Tamil Nadu and their diaspora communities. The festival marks the first day of Medam, the ninth month in the solar calendar followed in Kerala. It therefore always falls in the middle of April in the Gregorian calendar on 14th or 15th April every year.
The festival is notable for its solemnity and the general lack of pomp. The festival is marked by family time, preparing colourful auspicious items and viewing these as the first thing on the Vishu day( Vishukkani). In particular, Malayalees seek to view the golden blossoms of the Indian laburnum (Kani Konna), money or silver items, cloth(pattu), mirror, rice and other harvest products. The day also attracts firework play by children, wearing new clothes (Koti) and the eating a feast called Sadhya. In Kaineettam, elders give a small amount of pocket money to kids.
The Vishu arrangement typically includes an image of Krishna. People also visit temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple or Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple or Kulathupuzha Sree BaalaShastha Temple to have a 'Vishukkani Kazhcha' (viewing) in the early hours of the day.
Its is interesting that Vishu is celebrated in Nepal. Which gives credence to sayings that people in Kerala migrated from Nepal (not sure how long back this took place). This is the same time various Indian stated starting from Maharashtra to South of India celebrate the New Year. Songkarn in Thailand celebrated around the same time.

Vishu (Malayalam:വിഷു) is a festival celebrated in the state of Kerala in South India. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Therefore Vishu is more probably denoting one of the equinox days. Although Vishu (first of Medam) is the astrological new year day of Kerala.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, which literally means The first thing to be seen on the Vishu day post waking up.. The Vishukkani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, the yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the House. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside. This arrangement is completed the previous night. On the day of Vishu, the custom is to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the eyes closed so that the Vishukkani is the first sight of the new season. Since the occasion marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year it is also considered auspicious to read verses from Hindu Holy book Ramayanam after seeing the Vishukkani . It is also believed that the page of the Ramayanam to which you open up will have a bearing on your life in the coming year. Devotees also throng the well-known temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple to have a Vishukkani Kazhcha on the early hours of Vishu day.
Happy New Year to all my dear friends in Malayalikkoottam. May your life be filled with joy and prosperity throughout the year!!!!
