Quick sequence of three young women walking along by the canal today, one having problems with her face mask. Apologies for being a bit rough, all shot on the hoof and zooming as I walked, just kept trying to re-focus, zoom and click again (while avoiding other people walking around me!)

A few more people-watching candid shots from my daily permitted exercise walks around town - few people to photograph (also harder to do it sneakily without being seen as so few around you stand out), and, understandably, quite a few wearing protective masks.

A few quick people watching snaps, taken on the hoof, strolling through Middle Meadow Walk on one of the warmest days of the summer.

Chums strolling by the Union Canal.

Stitches tailoring in Bruntsfield had these masks they had made in their window, next to some lovely antique sewing machines, so took a couple of quick snaps - through the window, so please excuse the lack of sharpness and the reflections

Cycle couriers, who have been very busy during the Lockdown, waiting outside the Fountainpark Fry for the first dinner deliveries of the evening.

Masked couple, one outside the bus shelter (and being reflected in the glass) and her companion inside.

The pubs re-opened here in the middle of the weeks, although it is all a bit different from before with Covid safeguards as Lockdown eases further, numbers are restricted, groups have to be spaced out, it's not quite like before where you can just roll into any pub you fancy when you feel like it.

This is the Swedish bar, Akva, which sits at the end of the Union Canal, with a large beer garden facing the waterfront. During the main part of Lockdown, when the bars were closed, their tables and benches were still outside in their beer garden, so I would sometimes sit there for a break during my Lockdown exercise walks.

Normally on a summer weekend this would be way busier, but after months of it all being closed and hardly any people about it feels peculiar to see so many people using it again. We all dreamed of a return to normal life during the depths of Lockdown, now that is is very slowly going back to life (although far from normal) it feels weird - I imagine a lot of us have similar feelings, we wanted back to regular life and yet after months of "stay safe, stay at home, avoid groups" etc we're wary of that returning attempt at normal life too. Strange times...

Waiting outside the cafe for their turn - with the current Covid restrictions we can't go inside cafes and restaurants, we need to wait and order from the doorways (or serving hatches if they have them). Quick sequence of people-watching shots during the recent snowy weather.

Even skeletons are aware of the importance of wearing a face mask during the pandemic

Masked lady taking photos of the fountain in Princes Street Gardens today at the same time I was, so I sneakily took one of her!

Strolling by the Union Canal on a bright, warm, summer afternoon (with the now very common "chin strap" of the face mask pulled down below the jaw, a pretty common sight these days!)

Author Amanda Block visiting the Edinburgh Bookshop with advance copies of her upcoming debut The Lost Storyteller, to be published by Hachette this July. The book comes with a hearty endorsement by Jenny Fagan and sounds very intriguing (waiting to borrow the advance copy from colleague once she's read it!). Amanda also signed the ladder, a tradition in the EB, we get our visiting authors to sign the big ladder on the bookshelves, lot of names on there!

You can read more about Amanda's book on her publisher's site here www.hachette.co.uk/titles/amanda-block/the-lost-storytell... (and if you are buying it, try buying from your local Indy bookshop if you can, Jeff Bezos really doesn't need more of your money!)

A pretty common sight now, people masked when outdoors. Since they are still hard to get hold of due to the demand, most don't have them on, but I suspect even when lockdown restrictions ease we will still be seeing this a lot, especially when we need to be in shared spaces like shops, transport etc.

Lady in mask and scarf, walking along the wintery towpath by the frozen Union Canal, the vibrant red of her scarf stood out amid the white ice and snow and drew my eye. Sadly late in the afternoon, so the light wasn't very good, but I managed a few shots

Spotted this on the way to work recently, carved pumpkin for Halloween, but sporting a virus mask - safety first!!! Made me smile.

I can't help it, but 12 02 2021 (That's February 12 2021, as it is written by Continental Europeans) still feels like a moment of scifi, not like a moment that is .. now.

And: it's a palindrome date.

Laura Lam is a regular at the monthly events I enjoy run by Edinburgh's Shoreline of Infinity journal of science fiction - she had two books out this year and the awful luck that many writers had of them coming out during the Lockdown. Finally she was able to actually go into the bookshop and sign some copies and have her pic taken with them on the shelves, which is always a nice thing for any writer, seeing their books on local bookshop shelves, but something that has been denied to a lot of writers this awful year, so I was really happy she was able to visit us at last!

The books are Goldlilocks, science fiction with a strong feminist approach, and Seven Devils, which Laura co-authored with Elizabeth May, again giving the genre a much-needed boost of strong, female-centric plots.

Masked young woman walking past a construction site - the sign for the building company is behind. Probably means nothing to most, but to those of us in Scotland it is hilarious, as "bam" is short for "bampot", an old slang term for an utter arse or loathsome idiot, as in "he's a total bampot", with the target also being referred to as a "bam". I wonder if anyone has explained this to the company...

Looking down onto the broader part of the walkway by the canal at Fountainbridge, near the new Boroughmuir High School, the bridge offers another angle for people watching (and the angle also lets you see people spread out for social distancing)

Masked lady waiting to use the pedestrian crossing. While it is still quiet relative to normal, there has been a noticable upsurge in traffic in the last couple of weeks, so in the city centre at big junctions it's still a good idea to use the crossings (earlier in lockdown there was so little traffic you could cross anywhere as long as you looked first)

These aren't quite as sharp as I'd like, as they were shot looking through the large picture windows at one end of the mall, looking through them to the path below, snapping a few folks approaching the doors below.

I saw these two masked girls on the opposite side of the street from me, just as I lined up my shot one of them obviously noticed me!
