For this month's Virtual Paintout, I spent many hours (virtually) wondering around the south of Timisoara in western Romania, along Stada Aries and Stada Culj out to the south-west where industrial parks meet farmland. My sketch shows Biserica Piarista in the Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand.. There was hardly anything characteristically Romanian along the modern highways - a lot of Western companies have set up shop in this city. All the interesting old buildings were tucked well away in still photos taken in side streets, far from Google Maps street view. While the still photos showed spectaclar scenes in autumn and winter, Google Maps street view was shot in bright mid-summer.
I have had several inquiries about the plans for the demolition site. Here is a first look at a virtual construction of the new plaza in front of the cathedral.

Ich habe mehrere Fragen erhalten über die Pläne für die Abbruchstelle. Hier ist eine virtuelle Aufzeichnung als erster Blick auf den neuen Platz vor der Kathedrale.

During early morning hours, and while the five-story temporary Art Hotel exhibit isn't open for public viewing, a team from Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects (D&B) has been laser scanning the entire building since Monday, February 8, 2016. The completed scan combines the three dimensional data into an online virtual art exhibit “walk-through” available for public viewing starting at 8:00 PM PST on February 19, 2016. Virtual Art Hotel is only available for a limited time, and will be completely erased the day the building is demolished.
“As the Art Hotel closes, the “walk-through” will be available only temporarily, so that both the hotel exhibit itself and the virtual exhibit are short-term,” says Jason A. Silva, design principal at Dreyfuss & Blackford and project lead for the Virtual Art Hotel.
Led by Silva and Chad Garcia, director of design technology at D&B, the team will scan, compile and launch the free online "point cloud" model allowing the public to virtually experience the building in a way people have never seen before. After the Jade Apartments are demolished, the Virtual Art Hotel will be removed from the Internet and all instances of the data will be destroyed.
The laser scanning technology works by millions of points being recorded by LIDAR scanning equipment, which senses light reflected from the laser as it rotates and covers a complete spherical range. “The term LIDAR is a portmanteau of light and radar, and functions the same as radar, with the benefit of light reflection - including color, which is ideal to record the art inside the space,” said Silva. “As architects, we use this tool to accurately document existing conditions when renovating or remodeling an existing building. However, in this case this virtual online experience will, like the Art Hotel itself, be temporary,” he added.

Because of the pandemic, this year we now have two registration options: IN-PERSON and VIRTUAL-ONLY.
ACRM Annual Conference :: CORE: 21 – 24 October 2020
PRE-Conference: 19 – 21 October 2020
~~~~~~
You will find significant savings when you register through the VIRTUAL-ONLY path. If at a later time you determine that you want to attend in-person, you have the option to change your registration to an IN-PERSON pass and pay the difference in the registration fees. We call this the TOGGLE OPTION.
Likewise, if you register through the IN-PERSON path and you later find that you are unable to attend, you have the option to change your registration to a VIRTUAL-ONLY pass and receive a credit for the difference in the registration fees. Again, we are calling this the TOGGLE OPTION.
For those who choose the IN-PERSON registration option, we want to assure you that social distancing and safety measures, following the CDC Guidelines, will be fully implemented.
For those who opt for the VIRTUAL-ONLY registration option, we want to assure you that we will be making our very best efforts to LIVE-STREAM and record all of the content with 100s of CME/CEUs for the world's greatest RECORDED CONTENT offering.
And as a bonus everyone who registers will have access to the RECORDED CONTENT until 30 June 2021.
That's my brother Daniel with our new nephew Felix Sam! Coming to you live from Auckland New Zealand. It was very odd to have a computer join us at the Thanksgiving table, but it was also great. Danny and Andrea got to be with us while Holly and I read our Thanksgiving/10th anniversary bits. And they were with us ten years ago when we met, too. So a little internet went a long way.
