Macro Mondays 10/06/19 theme Childhood Toys.
So the year was 1977 and a six year old me,my dad and grandad stood in line to watch this film called Star Wars A New Hope.At the time I didn't really understand it but I was hooked. From that moment on I wanted all the toy's and over forty years on I still have them.So I have tried to recreate one of the final scenes from episode six Return Of The Jedi, the bit were Luke battles his father Darth Vader in front of the Emperor.I used three figures (Luke,Vader and the Emperor) and used green and red LED's to light the scene and the Lightsabers.
DADDY: “Lilac? Lilac?”
LILAC: “Yes Daddy?”
DADDY: “Little Lilac, what are you doing?”
LILAC: “I’m being calm, serene and regal, Daddy.”
DADDY: “Well you certainly do look calm, serene and regal, little Lilac.”
LILAC: “Thank you Daddy.”
DADDY: “But Lilac, what does being calm, serene and regal have to do with fabric and lace from my fabric chest and Sylko cotton spools from my sewing drawer?”
LILAC: “Oh, don’t you know, Daddy?”
DADDY: “Evidently I don’t, little Lilac. Perhaps you’d care to enlighten me.”
LILAC: “Well, I was reading one of your books from your library not all that long ago, about the Romanovs, the last Tsar and Tsarina of the Russian Empire.”
DADDY: “Oh yes, I saw you with that book Lilac. It’s a very big book for a little bear – lots of words.”
LILAC: “And lots of pictures too, Daddy. The Romanovs liked to take lots and lots of photographs.”
DADDY: “Indeed yes, Lilac.”
LILAC: “Well, I was reading that Alexandra, the last Tsarina, really loved the colour mauve. She had a mauve boudoir. The Mauve Room received its name from the opal-coloured silk on the walls, which was made by Charles Berger's firm in Paris, a company which still exists today at the same address in the French capital. The fabric was described as a Lampas Violet Reseda and it was extremely expensive. The total cost of the silk and trim in the Mauve Room exceeded the cost of any of the Imperial Fabergé easter eggs. Matching fabric from a Moscow firm was used to cover the furniture. This fabric differed slightly from the French material as it was slightly lighter in tone and had a raised floral motif woven into it. Both fabrics were of lampas silk, which is a raised reflective weave which gives the material a unusual soft glimmer - particularly at night by artificial light. Tsarina Alexandra personally picked the fabric and hue. It is said she asked for a colour to match a favourite sprig of lilac given to her by Tsar Nicholas.”
DADDY: “Is that right, Lilac?”
LILAC: “It is! So I have decided to make my own Mauve Room using your fabric, lace and Sylko cotton spools.”
DADDY: “Oh, I see.”
LILAC: “Now, all I need to complete my bliss is a nice cup of calming tea, Daddy.” *Looks meaningfully at Daddy.*
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 6th of September is “pretty in pastel purple”, and I needed to look no further than little Lilac, who is one of my smaller bears, as you can tell when you compare her to the Sylko cotton reels that she has used to decorate her Mauve Room. Lilac was a gift to me from a friend in Dorset who said that the sweet little bear was looking for a happy forever home, and so she came to live with me last year, but it has taken until now to have the perfect reason to photograph her. For anyone who follows my photostream will know that I collect vintage Sylko cotton reels and haberdashery, and that is what I have used to create a pretty pastel purple background. There are various lace pieces, some individual lace flowers, including the ones on Lilac’s head and that she holds which are made in Latvia. The Dewhurst's Sylko reels of Dark and Light Lilac and Mauve cotton all date from between 1938 and 1954. I hope you like my choice of this week’s theme, and that Lilac makes you smile!
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.
These vintage toys were photographed in the Loop-Harrison mansion, a Victorian era home that is part of the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum, in Port Sanilac, Michigan. I think I would have loved having toys like these when I was a kid.

Also Happy Truck Thursday! Thanks for the invitation, Paul.
A display of vintage toys found in the Route 66 museum in Elk City, OK. Fascinating, but just a little creepy....
GARNET: “Hullo everyone and everybear. My name is Garnet, and yesterday I came to live in my new forever home at Daddy’s house. I am very excited, pleased and grateful to be here! Do you like tea? Would you like a cup? Would you like to hear my tale? Come and join me, and I’ll pour you a nice cup of tea, and you can hear all about it…
Once upon a time, some time ago - I’m not exactly sure when - I was born in England, but I sailed across the ocean and came to live with a lovely lady in Melbourne, Australia who had a very large bear family – even bigger than Daddy’s if you can believe it – and she became my new bear Mummy. I loved living with my lovely new Mummy, and we had many, many years – I can’t quite remember exactly how many, but many – together smiling, laughing, cuddling and giving snuffly kisses to one another, and having tea parties and playing bear games with my bear family whom I also loved very much. We exchanged lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses together and had many adventures. However, one day, not so long ago, my Mummy went to sleep, and she didn’t wake up, even after my bear family and I gave her big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses to awaken her. We were all so sad, and I shed many tears. My Mummy’s human daughter came and collected up all of we bears and took us back to her house. However, her house was much too small for all of us, so she asked us whether some of us would be brave enough to perhaps live with a new Mummy or Daddy somewhere else if she could find a suitable one for us. Well, having sailed across the ocean as I have, I’m not afraid of new adventures, and I am a tenacious bear, so I raised my paw and said that I would be happy to live with a new Mummy or Daddy, providing they had a lovely home, gave lots of cuddles and kisses, and had a bear family of their own that I could enjoy tea parties with and play bear games with. I have standards you know, being the fastidious and particular bear that I am! Mummy’s daughter said that she would do her utmost, and she made enquiries and took lots of lovely photographs of me to share on websites on the internet where there are pages for bear adoptions.
Now, unbeknownst to me, about six months ago, a lovely and kind lady was looking to find the perfect present for her son, who was celebrating his birthday, and she saw me on a bear adoption website. Guess who her son is? That’s right! It is Daddy! So, Daddy’s human Mummy met my Mummy’s human daughter, and they discussed Daddy as being a potentially suitable candidate for me. Once she had vetted him, Mummy’s human daughter introduced the lovely lady to me. We had a very convivial, yet also deep and frank conversation about Daddy over a nice pot of tea for me and coffee for her, as she doesn’t drink tea, only coffee - although she is English and not American, which I felt made her choice of favourite beverage rather odd. Still, it was not her, but Daddy I was wanting to know about. I asked a great many questions about him, his bear family, the kind of house he lives in and what his bear family is like and does for fun. In the end, I was satisfied that Daddy’s home would be quite suitable for me, so with many big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses, I bid farewell to my Mummy’s human daughter and those of my bear family who were staying with my Mummy’s human daughter to live or hadn’t yet set off on new adventures to live with new Mummies and Daddies, and I went home with Daddy’s Mummy.
Now, Daddy and I were supposed to be united a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, the stars did not align as I had hoped they would, and circumstances intervened. However, yesterday, on Daddy’s Mummy’s birthday, Daddy’s Mummy asked me very politely to climb into a big round red box full of soft crinkled red paper shreds, which made for quite a comfortable bed, and she tied up the box with a big red satin ribbon. I was to wait for Daddy, who was visiting his Mummy for her birthday. I had a snooze – I’m not quite sure how long for, but for a little while - but was suddenly awoken by the box moving. I heard a muffled, but kind, voice outside the box, and the sound of the ribbon being removed. Next thing you know, the lid was taken off the box and there was Daddy, smiling down at me, his dark brown eyes sparking with happiness and love! He just picked me up, swept me into his arms and gave me a big cuddle and a kiss on my muzzle, and I gave Daddy a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss back in return! I knew from that moment that Daddy was going to be the best bear Daddy ever.
Now I am here in my new forever home, and as you can see, enjoying a nice cup of tea. It is very comfortable here, and my new bear family are so lovely, kind and loving. Everybear has made me feel so very welcome! I think I am now going to live happily ever after, here at Daddy’s house!
So now you know my tale. Would you like another cup of tea? Your cup appears empty to me, and we can’t have that! Would you like a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss too? I’m very good at giving them, you know!”
DADDY: "Welcome, dear Garnet! Garnet is a beautiful hand made English bear given to me by my mother for my birthday after she was selected out of the collection of a former teddy bear enthusiast. Garnet is made from garnet coloured mohair plush (thus her name), with soft russet coloured suede paws and black glass eyes. The heart locket pendant about her neck is gold, and was given to her by her former Mummy. I do hope that she will be very happy living with me. She is certainly making herself at home here, as she should. I hope you will love her as much as I do!"
“It's nice having a bear about the house.” ― Michael Bond, “A Bear Called Paddington” (1958).
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" the 11th of July is "homemade" I did not need to look very far to find the perfect choice! If you follow my photostream, you will know that this chap makes regular appearances. My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt who was a very clever woman. Not that you can see it, but he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh. The reason why you can’t see my Paddington Bear’s hat or collar is because it is winter time here in Melbourne where I live, and thus to keep warm from the winter chill, Paddington is wearing a homemade hat and matching scarf made for him by the lovely mother-in-law of one of my closest friends who enjoys all the adventures Paddington and his fellow bear friends get up to! My Paddington Bear has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family, and is a homemade companion for life. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
ORSON: "Reading" "'My Grandmamma, what large teeth you have.' said Little Red Riding Hood. 'All the better to eat you with!' said the Big Bad Wolf, and with those words, he sprang out of the bed and rushed at Little Red Riding Hood."
SCOUT: *Gasps.*
PADDY: "I know! It's exciting isn't it, Scout... even though you know what is happening next." *Smiles.*
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "I think the grey wolf in the story is not very nice, Orson. I'm ashamed to be related to such a naughty wolf."
SCOUT: *Remains silent.*
PADDY: "Well, luckily you are a different to him, Monsieur Charles, so nobear would hold your lineage against you."
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Oh thank you, Paddy."
SCOUT: *Remains silent and looks serious.*
ORSON: "Are you alright, Scout?"
PADDY: "What's wrong, Scout? Are you not enjoying the story? You love the faerie tale of Little Red Riding Hood." *Concerned.*
SCOUT: "Oh no, I like the faerie tale, so long as it's not the one that ends with Little Red Riding Hood being gobbled up and no-one comes to rescue her or Grandmamma from the wolf's stomach."
ORSON: "No, it's not that version of the story, Scout. I just flipped forward and had a look further along, and there is definitely a woodcutter come to save Little Red Riding Hood."
SCOUT: "That's alright then!"
PADDY: "But something is wrong, Scout." *More concerned.* "What is it?"
SCOUT: "Well... I just have some concerns, Paddy."
PADDY: "Concerns, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Yes Paddy!" *Nods seriously.* "Concerns!"
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "What concerns, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, you know how I got my own official Little Red Riding Hood from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear?"
PADDY, ORSON and MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Yes Scout!"
SCOUT: "And that means I am an official Little Red Riding Hood in training."
PADDY, ORSON and MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Yes Scout!"
SCOUT: "Well... Monsieur Charles, you aren't going to eat me, are you?"
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Eat you, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Yes, Monsieur Charles. Now that I am a trainee of the Little Red Riding Hood School of Little Red Riding Hoods, you aren't tempted to gobble me up, are you?"
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Scout!" *Shocked.* "How can you even think such a thing?"
PADDY: "Scout!" *Shocked.* "You know Monsieur Charles is a vegetarian! Of course he isn't going to eat you."
SCOUT: "I'm just checking, Paddy! There has never been a Little Red Riding Hood, even a trainee one, in the house before me, so the temptation hasn't been around for Monsieur Charles!"
PADDY: "Well, that's not entirely true, Scout. There was Dolly."
SCOUT: *Holds out Dolly and looks at her.* "Oh no Paddy! Dolly is Dolly! She just happens to have a red hood. Dolly doesn't count. She is full of stuffing and isn't a nice juicy bear morsel, like me."
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Of course I'm not going to gobble you up, dear Scout!" *Assuring.* "I mean, I know I say that I love you so much that I want to gobble you up."
SCOUT: *Squeals.*
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "But I would only gobble you up with kisses!" *Jumps up and cuddles Scout and kisses him.*
SCOUT: "So, you won't gobble me up then, even if I am a trainee Little Red Riding Hood, Monsieur Charles?"
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Of course I won't, dear Scout. I'd much rather eat a carrot stick dipped in houmous than gobble you up."
SCOUT: "Oh phew!" *Wipes forehead with paw.* "That's alright then." *Smiles.*
PADDY: "Does that make you feel better, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Oh yes Paddy! I'm not worried any more!"
PADDY: "Good!" *Smiles.* "I'm glad, Scout."
MONSIEUR CHARLES: "I'm glad too, dear Scout."
ORSON: "I'm glad too, Scout."
SCOUT: "Thank you Paddy, Monsieur Charles and Orson."
ORSON: "Then, if you are feeling better, may I go on with the story?"
SCOUT: "Oh, please do Orson. I want to hear about Little Red Riding Hood and Grandmamma being rescued from the Big Bad Wolf's grumbly tummy!"
Orson is reading from my 1916 first edition of "All About Little Red Riding Hood" retold and illustrated by Johnny B Gruelle, who was an American artist, political cartoonist, children's book and comics author, illustrator, and storyteller. He is best known as the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls and as the author/illustrator of dozens of books.
Paddy, Scout Orson and Monsieur Charles are taking tea from Scout's Christmas present from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear a few years ago: a beautiful 1930s Little Red Riding Hood tea set. It was made by an unknown maker in Stoke-on-Trent. Not all the set is being used today. It features beautiful, brightly coloured transfers of different parts of the faerie tale.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Orson, named after the little bear constellation, was made by the same friend who made Jago and Daisy-Maud. He comes ready dressed in 'trousers' made of German mohair accessorised with embroidered braces. His paws are ultra suede and his eyes are glass. He is described as being a little bit serious minded but very friendly. He's fine once he gets to know you.
Charles the Wolf (Le Loup Charles) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. He wears a removable purple coat with a black furry trim and smart fur lined boots. He also has a big mouth and sharp teeth - all the better to eat you with, my dear!
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! Paddy look!"
PADDY: "What is it, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Look Paddy! Roses! I haven't seen any roses since forever!"
PADDY: "Well, Spring is in the air, although it is still a bit too cold not to wear hats and scarves out of doors, Scout."
SCOUT: "These roses are soooo pretty!"
PADDY: "Oh yes, Scout! Lorraine Lee is very beautiful."
SCOUT: *Looks oddly at Paddy.* "Well, I'm sure she does, Paddy, but I wouldn't know about that, as I don't know her."
PADDY: "But of course you do, Scout. You just said that Lorraine Lee was beautiful."
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! Are you ill?" *Puts paw to Paddy's forehead.* "Do you need to lie down?"
PADDY: "I'm feeling fine, Scout. Why do you ask?"
SCOUT: "Well, not to be rude, but when you start talking gibberish nonsense, I start to worry about your mental fac... mental facu... mental facutal..."
PADDY: "Faculties, Scout?" *Helpful.*
SCOUT: "The state of your brain, Paddy. I mean, it does come from ye olden days when the world was black and white, so I imagine you are bound to have a loose wire or screw sometime."
PADDY: "Scout!"
SCOUT: "What?!?!"
PADDY: "How many times have I told you that it is rude and bad mannerly to refer to a bear's age? Especially mine!"
SCOUT: "I'm just trying to suggest that you might have that early onset amnesia, Paddy!"
PADDY: "It's early onset dementia, Scout, and I'll have you know that my mental faculties are perfectly fine." *Nods seriously.*
SCOUT: "Then why did you say I said that a lady called Lorraine looked pretty when what I was really saying was pretty were these pretty peachy pink roses, Paddy? If that isn't early onset anesthesia, I don't know what is!"
PADDY: "Early onset dementia, Scout, and the reason why I said that is because that is what these roses are called. They are called Lorraine Lee roses."
SCOUT: "Ooooh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Oh that's alright then!" *Sighs with relief and cuddles Paddy.* "I'm so glad you don't have early onset Anastasia, Paddy. That would make me very, very sad if you did!"
PADDY: "It's no...." *Shakes head and cuddles Scout back.* "Oh never mind, Scout. I'm glad I don't either."
SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy?"
PADDY: "Yes Scout?"
SCOUT: "Doesn't that make it confusing for the roses?"
PADDY: "Does what make it confusing for the roses, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, being called Lorraine."
PADDY: "Why would that be confusing to the roses, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, when you call to one bloom and say 'Hey Lorraine!', they will all turn their heads because they are all Lorraines!"
PADDY: "I hadn't thought about that, Scout, but I suppose they must be used to it, since they have been called Lorraine Lee roses since 1924."
SCOUT: "Woooowwww Paddy! That really is ancient! That is more than one hundred years ago! That's even older than you and Daddy, Paddy!" *Looks at roses in amazement. "And yet they still look so fresh!"
The Lorraine Lee rose was bred in 1924 by Australian rose propagator Alister Clark, who named the pretty peach pink bloom after his cousin, Lorraine Lee, when she chose it as a seedling from his collection. It was designed to thrive in Australian conditions, is known for its vigorous growth and unique winter flowering, and has become one of Australia's most popular roses.

Being colder here, even though spring is in the air, both Paddy and Scout are wearing hand knitted scarves and Paddy is wearing hand knitted hat by Lorna's Lovely Looks. Paddy sports a heart pin and Scout insisted on wearing a pink cupcake one, which seems most appropriate considering his perpetual grumbly tummy. Both were gifts from a good friend who is very fond of both Paddy and Scout.
PADDY: "Hullo everyone! It has just gone midday here on New Year's Eve, as you can see by our clock! It is very nice and sunny and warm here where we live, so for this New Year's Eve, we have decided to sit outside in the garden and have tea parties, drink tea, (or in Nanuk's case special Dutch hot chocolate), read faerie tales and books about bear hugs to make us smile, play games like hide-and-seek and chasey..."
SCOUT: "And play with my new Little Red Riding Hood wooden dollies, Paddy! Don't forget them!" *Points to wooden dolls with paw.*
PADDY: "And that too, dear Scout... whilst we wait for all the fireworks. We have delicious treats to satisfy our grumbly tummies, like biscuits and cake honey and marmalade! We will play bear games whilst we wait. I know that Scout and Emmett are especially looking forward to the fireworks! I just hope they don't scare Little Ladybird, but I'm sure sitting on Bumble's lap, she will be alright. It means we are all going to stay up late tonight (past our bedtime), but Daddy says that since it is New Year's Eve, it is allowed. We are all so excited! Happy New Year"

Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
Danny Boy, made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud and Orson, has a touch of the 'Oirish' in him with his emerald green scarf. He has an open mouth as he likes to sing and comes with his own songbook, "Irish Airs for Teddy Bears". He has a wobbly head to give him animation when he's talking to you, and is made of English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. Quite a happy-go-lucky little character....
Algie is made by the same friend in England who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy. He is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind.
Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.
Pearl and Sapphire are both little Russ Bears who arrived on Christmas Day 2023. They travelled along with Flock from Mama Kim's house in Alabama all the way here. Both are sweet little bears who are tenacious and cheeky, but full of love and snuffly kisses most of all.
Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Handmade at Merrythought in England from warm-gold tousled mohair plush, Edgar is a cheerful companion who has terracotta pure cotton velvet paws, and wears a delightful floral cotton bow tie. He is number 2 of a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Benjamin is made by Merrythought in England too. A friendly character, he has been handmade from soft, caramel-coloured mohair plush featuring a chocolate-coloured base that beautifully complements his pure wool felt paws. He wears a traditional, satin-lined waistcoat made from the finest British tweed and secured with brass studs. He is number 110 of a limited worldwide edition of 150
Based on the famous original drawings by Peggy Fortnum of Michael Bond's famous bear, the Paddington - Classic Edition is British-made (of course) at Merrthought's historical factory and is truly timeless and designed to bring a lifetime of joy and companionship. Made in a special numbered edition, I am fortunate enough to have number 17.
An exceptionally charming and true to character recreation of Paddington, who is cherished around the world for his kind nature….and fondness of marmalade sandwiches! Entirely British-made at Merrythought's historical Ironbridge factory, this Paddington Bear has been designed to bring a lifetime of joy and companionship, and is the ultimate memento of the Paddington movie franchise. Created by Merrythought as a Special Edition, Paddington - the Movie Edition is individually numbered as part of a limited worldwide release. He is number 18.

Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petite Chaperon Rouge) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. Little Red Riding Hood is outfitted in a floral patterned cotton dress, trimmed at the hem with sparkly pink tulle. Her beautiful cape, with a lined hood, is made from red fine corduroy and it is fastened with a plum coloured tie. The outfit is complemented by striped jersey leggings, lace socks and charcoal grey velour shoes finished with satin bows . Her face and hands are made of a linen weave cotton and her beautiful long plaits are made of jersey. Little Red Riding Hood’s facial features are delicately done, with embroidered eyes and mouth and hand painted nose, freckles and rosy cheeks.
Charles the Wolf (Le Loup Charles) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. PADDY: *Calls.* "Scout! Algie! Where are you? It's time for afternoon tea!"
SCOUT: "We're over here, Paddy!"
PADDY: *Follows Scout's voice before stopping in alarm.* "Scout! Algie! What are you doing?"
ALGIE: "Oh, just hanging around, Paddy." *Smiles.*
PADDY: "Oh my! How long have you been hanging upside-down like that?"
ALGIE: "A while I think." *Ponders.* "I can't tell the time like you can, but since the big yellow ball in the sky was below us. Now it is to our left..." *Contemplates.* "Or is that our right? Or your right... or left, Paddy?"
SCOUT: "We've been hanging like this for a few hours now, Paddy."
PADDY: *Alarmed.* "Scout! Algie! All your stuffing will rush to your head and give you a headache! if you hang upside-down like that for too long!"
ALGIE: *Chuckles sheepishly.* "Oh I never get a headache hanging upside-down... or is it downside-up? I never can tell. I get confused. Anyway, I don't have much stuffing to fill my head either way, Paddy."
SCOUT: "Algie has a good point, Paddy. We might not be upside-down. You may be the one who is downside-up, and we are the right way around!"
PADDY: *Scoffs.* "Don't be ridiculous, Scout! Of course you are upside-down, and I'm not downside-up, I'm the correct way around!"
SCOUT: "Says who?"
PADDY: "Says anybear, Scout!"
SCOUT: "Well we don't, Paddy. Isn't that right, Algie?"
ALGIE: "Is what, what, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Isn't Paddy downside-up?"
ALGIE: *Considers Paddy thoughtfully.* "Well, he could be upside-down, Scout... or downside-up. He looks a bit downside-up to me. It depends on whether we are downside-up or upside-down."
PADDY: *Rubs forehead with paw.* "All your talk of upside-down and downside up is starting to give me a headache, Algie!"
SCOUT: "Aha!" *Triumphant.* So you are upside-down, Paddy! All the stuffing is rushing to your head and giving you a headache!"
PADDY: "Well, if you are really the right way around, and I am upside-down, how can I go inside and eat afternoon tea, Scout? If I were upside-down, the food would fall out of my paws."
SCOUT: "Hhhhmmm" *Considers.* "That's a valid point, Paddy."
PADDY: "Well, if you're hungry, Daddy is putting out a lovely, freshly baked lemon cheesecake with a biscuit crust served with cream if you want to come down and come inside to our downside-up dining room. Bye-bye!" *Waves, turns and walks away.*
ALGIE: "Baked lemon cheesecake!"
SCOUT: "With a biscuit crust, and served with cream! Grumbly tummy, Algie! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously upside-down.* "We need to get down and get downside-up, Algie. How do we do that?" *Expectant.*
ALGIE: "Oh, I don't know, Scout. I thought it was my job to get us upside-down, and your job to get us downside-up." *Hopeful.*
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 13th of September is “upside down”, and I immediately thought of my Algie Bear, who was made for me by a very good friend, is a very adventurous little boy: he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees, and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind. Therefore, when the theme was announced, it was Algie whom I immediately thought of! Of course, if there is an adventure to be had in our house, then my little grey woollen knitted bear Scout is usually part of it, so of course he had to get in on the act! Oh and don't worry about Algie and Scout's grumbly tummies! When I head from Paddy that they were stuck, upside-down in a tree, I went and rescued them, so that they both got an extra large slice of baked lemon cheesecake with extra cream! I hope you like my choice of subject for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
Algie is made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy, and he comes frpom Junie Bears in Norfolk. He is very floppy with poseable paws, and he is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees, and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind.
Paddy, Scout (and Dolly), Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson, Danny Boy, Algie, Rosie, Garnet, Emmett, Edgar, Benjamin, Cornelia, Freddy Flock, Sapphire, Pearl, Queenie, Lilac, Little Bee, Little Ladybird, Bumble, Merrythgought Classic Paddington, Merrythought Movie Paddington, Monsieur Charles, Le Petite Chaperon Rouge, Duckie, Prince Maurice and I and I would like to wish all our flickr friends and followers the very best for the festive season.
Thank you for all the interest you have shown in our photographs this year, and all the encouragement you have given me. Thank you for being an amazing and supportive community!
We hope that you find much joy and beauty in the Christmas period to make you happy and bright.
Merry Christmas to everybear and everyone!

SCOUT: "Happy New Year Paddy!"
PADDY: "Happy New Year Scout!"
SCOUT: "Now what Paddy? I am in my new pale pink tutu and Little Red Riding Hood from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear! I am ready to disco dance!"
PADDY: "Soon, you may dance, but first I am going to give you a New Year big little bear hug and snuffly kiss, Scout!"

BOGART: "Hullo Danbo! Look! I have come visiting Mummy Marian's house to see you my best friend and Fuzzy my best friend. Bleep... luv Danbo!"
DANBO: *Looks up at Bogart, then back at Peter's Cuddly Bear that he holds.* "Bleep! Bugart... luv Bugart?" *Confused.*
BOGART: "Oh Danbo that isn't me." *Giggles.* "That is Peter's special bear, Cuddly Bear."
DANBO: *Looks up at Bogart, then back at Peter's Cuddly Bear that he holds.* "Bleep! Bugart... luv Bugart?" *Still confused.*
BOGART: "I know, Cuddly Bear looks like me. He could be my little brother. But he isn't me. I am me, and Cuddly Bear belongs to Peter."
DANBO: "Bleep... luv Puter... Bleep... luv... cludd..ly... bleep... blear... Luv Bugart!"
BOGART: "Oh I love you too, Danbo! Bleep... luv Danbo! Now please give Cuddly Bear back to Peter. Peter must miss cuddling him."
DANBO: "Bleep... kiss... Bugart?"
BOGART: "Oh yes, of course we can kiss, Danbo! Bleep... luv Danbo!"
DANBO: "Bleep... luv Bugart!" *Kisses Bogart.*
My bears Paddy, Scout Bogart and Jago have made very good friends with four bears in Holland called Peter, Oleg, Benny and Fuzzy (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/) . Bogart has also befriended Danbo... well, I’m not quite sure what Danbo is, but Bogart seems to know (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577206753...). Danbo mistook Peter's special bear, Cuddly Bear for Bogart. I do see the similarities. So Bogart has come over to clear up the mistake Danbo has made about Cuddly Bear, and is making sure that Danbo returns the special little bear to Peter, his rightful owner. You can see this in the link here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/52260805383/in/photost... or in the first comment below.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Thank you Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of Danbo's photo in my collage of two images.
SCOUT: "Thank you for lifting me up to post my Christmas wishes list to Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, Paddy!"
PADDY: "You're welcome Scout. It's hard when the slot in the box is so high and you are such a little bear."
SCOUT: "I know, but thanks to you, my wishes will now go off to Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear!" *Nods and smiles.*
PADDY: "And mine too, Scout." *Smiles.* "Thank you for bringing us to the magic pillar box for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, Daddy!"
SCOUT: "Yes, thank you, Daddy!"
DADDY: :You're welcome Paddy and Scout. Tell me, what did you wish for? What was on your lists?"
PADDY: "Well, I asked for a new tea set, Daddy."
DADDY: "Another one, Paddy?" *Alarmed.* "But you received one last year from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, and the year before!"
PADDY: "I know Daddy, but our family is getting larger, and therefore you cannot have too many tea sets."
DADDY: "Hhhmmm..." *Thinks.* "Well, I can't argue with that bear logic, Paddy."
PADDY: "Of course you can't, Daddy. My bear logic is very... well, logical, Daddy."
DADDY: "Indeed Paddy. And what did you wish for, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well Daddy, I wished for tutus... and a crown... and some tutus and..."
DADDY: "Wait a moment, Scout."
SCOUT: "What Daddy?"
DADDY: "You mentioned tutus twice."
SCOUT: "I know, Daddy."
DADDY: "Well, I think that was a mistake, Scout, if you have already mentioned it once."
SCOUT: "Me!" *Horrified.* "A mistake, Daddy?" *Indignant.* "I never make mistakes!"
PADDY: "Although you are sometimes a little..." *Ponders.* "Misguided."
SCOUT: "Yes! I am sometimes mis... misg... misgui..."
PADDY: "Misguided, Scout?" *Helpful.*
SCOUT: "I sometimes get confused about the crazy world. But I definitely did not make a mistake!"
DADDY: "Yes you have, Scout, you mentioned you added tutus twice on your list."
SCOUT: "No I haven't, Daddy!" *Shakes head more.*
DADDY: "Yes you have, Scout!"
PADDY: "No he hasn't, Daddy."
SCOUT: "Paddy is right, Daddy. I fear it is you who have made the mistake. I haven't listed tutus twice on my list, Daddy!" *Shakes head.* "I have listed tutus four times! They are at numbers one and three on my list and also at numbers five and seven." *Nods seriously.*
DADDY: "But why, Scout? Surely once is enough."
SCOUT: "No it isn't Daddy! Father Christmas is quite ancient, like you, and the Christmas Bear is very busy helping make up for Father Christmas' ancientness! If they skim read my list they may miss that I want tutus if I only list it once."
DADDY: "Oh!" *Surprised.*
SCOUT: "Besides, as Paddy said, our family is getting bigger, so I will need to start up my own tutu costume hire shop for bears. I found Little Ladybird and Little Bee wearing two of my tutus yesterday! I need more to fulfil the need!" *Nods seriously.* "Besides, you wouldn't want me to look unfashionable in last season's tutus, would you, Daddy?" *Preens.*
DADDY: "Well... I could argue that bear logic, Scout."
PADDY: I wouldn't if I were you, Daddy." *Warningly.*
SCOUT: "I wouldn't either, Daddy!" *Gives Daddy a hard stare and then preens more.*

SCOUT: “Oh look, Paddy! Such beautiful fake cherry blossoms!”
PADDY: “These aren't fake cherry blossoms, Scout. They aren't even real cherry blossoms, Scout!”
SCOUT: “Yes they are, Paddy! I know!”
PADDY: “How do you know, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Because you taught me, Paddy!" *Nods enthusiastically.*
PADDY: "No, I didn't, Scout!"
SCOUT: "Yes you did, Paddy!" *Nods emphatically.* "You taught me about those trick cherry blossom trees that don't really produce cherries, so they are fake, fibbing cherry blossoms!"
PADDY: “No, no, no, Scout! These aren't cherry blossoms!”
SCOUT: “They aren't, Paddy?” *Confused.*
PADDY: “No, Scout!”
SCOUT: “But they look like fake, fibbing cherry blossoms, Paddy!” *Scratches head with paw.* "I'm confused!"
PADDY: “Oh, I'm not surprised, dear Scout!”
SCOUT: “So if they aren't fake, fibbing cherry blossoms, then, what are they?”
PADDY: “Well, you were right when you identified them as blossoms, but these aren't cherry blossoms. They are apricot blossoms.”
SCOUT: “Apricot blossoms, Paddy?"
PADDY: “Yes Scout”
SCOUT: “Oh but, Paddy! They can't be, because they are white!”
PADDY: “Well the blossoms are white, but this is apricot blossom.”
SCOUT: “Oh!” *Disgusted.* "So these apricot blossoms are as bad as the fibbing fake cherry blossoms, Paddy!" *Shakes head.*
PADDY: “Whatever do you mean, Scout?”
SCOUT: “So, the fibbing, fake cherry blossoms are fibbers because they don't really have cherries, so they are fake. You say these blossoms are apricot, Paddy."
PADDY: “They are Scout!”
SCOUT: “No they aren't, Paddy”
PADDY: "Yes they are Scout!"
SCOUT: "No they aren't Paddy, because they are white! So, they are fake, fibbing apricot blossoms!"
PADDY: “But Scout, they are called apricot blossoms because this is an apricot tree!”
SCOUT: “An apricot tree, Paddy!” *Excited.* "Then why didn't you say so?"
PADDY: "Err, I just did, Scout."
SCOUT: "Well, I love apricots! They are yummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously and sits down beneath the apricot tree."
PADDY: “What are you doing, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Well, you just said that this is an apricot tree, so I'm waiting to catch the apricots!”
PADDY: “Well Scout, that's a lovely idea, but you may be waiting a while.”
SCOUT: “Oh that's alright, Paddy. I can spare a few hours.”
PADDY: “They make take longer than a few hours to grow and develop.”
SCOUT: “How much longer, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Well, days..."
SCOUT: "Days, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Even weeks, Scout. It could be a month before the apricots grow on the tree."
SCOUT: "Months, Paddy?!?! But Paddy! I have a grumbly tummy right now! Grumbly tummy Paddy! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.* "I will fade away from starvation if I wait that long for an apricot!"
DADDY: “Hullo you two!”
PADDY and SCOUT: “Hullo Daddy!”
DADDY: “May I take your photograph in front of the beautiful bank of pretty apricot blossom, please?”
PADDY: “Of course you can, Daddy!”
SCOUT: “Daddy? Daddy!”
DADDY: “Yes Scout?”
SCOUT: “May I ask you a question before you take our photo, Daddy?”
DADDY: “Of course you can, Scout. What would you like to ask?”
SCOUT: “Daddy, do you have any apricots at home?"
DADDY: *Smiles.* “Yes I do, Scout. There are some in the fruit bowl on the dining table. Why do you ask?"
SCOUT: “Because I have a grumbly tummy, Daddy! Grumbly tummy, Daddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs tummy vigorously.*
DADDY: “Oh well, in that case I'd better take your picture now, and then we can go home and you can eat some apricots, or even have some apricot jam on toast."
SCOUT: *Shyly.* "May I have both, Daddy? My tummy is very, very grumbly after all the walking we have done."
DADDY: "Yes, of course you can, Scout!"
SCOUT: *Squeals and jumps for joy.* "Oh thank you, Daddy!"
DADDY: "You can have some too, Paddy. You must have a grumbly tummy as well."
PADDY: "Well, now you mention it, Daddy... yes I do. Grumbly tummy, Daddy! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.*
DADDY: “But first I am going to take your photograph!”
SCOUT: “Well, I would like that too, Daddy!”
PADDY: “Me too, Daddy!”
DADDY: “Alright, when I count to three, say ‘grumbly tummies’! One… two… three!”
PADDY and SCOUT: “Grumbly tummies!”

DAISY-MAUD: "Ooohhh! Daddy! What is that lovely piece of blue lace and feathers?"
DADDY: "It’s a fascinator, Daisy-Maud."
DAISY-MAUD: "Ooohhh! How fascinating, Daddy." *Looks at fascinator with interest.* "Err… Daddy, what exactly is a fascinator?"
DADDY: "Well, it’s a type of headwear, Daisy-Maud. A fascinator is a formal headpiece, a style of millinery. Since the 1990s, the term has referred to a type of formal headwear worn as an alternative to the hat; it is usually a large decorative design attached to a band or clip."
DAISY-MAUD: "Daddy, it seems to me that a fascinator really isn't for a man to wear. It's fashion for a lady."
DADDY: "Yes, it is Daisy-Maud, but I am using it as a photographic prop."
DAISY-MAUD: "Please let me try it on, Daddy."
DADDY: "Very well Daisy-Maud."
DAISY-MAUD: "Yes! I think it looks much more fetching on me than on you!" *Smiles at her reflection in the mirror.*
DADDY: "I wasn’t actually going to wear it, Daisy-Maud. "
DAISY-MAUD: "That’s just as well, Daddy, because now I’m going to wear it. Very stylish and elegant."
DADDY: "But Daisy-Maud, I was photographing it."
DAISY-MAUD: "Well, I’m sure you’ll find something else fascinating to photograph instead, Daddy!" *Smiles again at her reflection in the mirror.*
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 23rd of February is "headwear". If you follow my photostream, you will be familiar with Daisy-Maud, as she and her elder brother Jago often feature in stories and adventures on Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday and sometimes other days of the week, such as this photo for today’s theme. I was leant a vibrant blue fascinator (formal headwear worn as an alternative to the hat) acquired from a charity shop to use as a prop for some photography. As I had the fascinator for over a month, I decided that I would have some fun with it, and photographed Daisy-Maud wearing it. When the theme was announced, I decided to use this photo as it seemed the perfect one to use. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.
Daisy-Maud is Jago’s little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
DADDY: "Are you settling in well, Edgar and Benjamin?"
EDGAR: "Oh yes, Daddy!"
BENJAMIN: "Thank you Daddy!"
DADDY: "That's good, my darlings! I am pleased to hear that."
BENJAMIN: "It's especially lovely when we get to take tea together."
EDGAR: "And enjoy such delicious macarons!" *Licks lips with cute little pink bear tongue.*
BENJAMIN: "Grumbly tummy, Daddy! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.*
EDGAR: "Grumbly tummy, Daddy! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.*
DADDY: "Oh dear!"
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 17th of January is "plush toys", which is the perfect theme for me, as I have a lovely collection of soft plush bears who quite enjoy being in front of my camera and under my lens. Both made by Merrythought Bears in Ironbridge, Shropshire, Edgar and Benjamin are the two latest additions to my ever burgeoning bear family. I hope you like my choice of bears for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.
This beautiful Willow Pattern nursery tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1920s. It features four cups and saucers as well as a tea pot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with the Willow Pattern in blue, just like the life-size equivalent. It has two sister sets: a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children’s tea sets and a faerie tale set from the 1930s Shell China Company faerie tale tea set that I have built up from various sellers over time.
He is number 110 of a limited worldwide edition of 150.
BOGART: "Hullo Jago."
JAGO: "Hullo Bogart."
BOGART: "Why are you sitting here alone, Jago? Are you sad?"
JAGO: "Oh no, Bogart, I'm very happy. How could I be sad when I have you, Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington and Daddy for my family? I love being here with you all."
BOGART: "Then why are you sitting here?"
JAGO: "Well, sometimes I just like to sit quietly on my own and daydream, or look for faeries in the garden."
BOGART: "Faeries, in our garden? Where?" *Excited.*
JAGO: "Well, I haven't seen one yet, but maybe today will be my lucky day."
BOGART: "May I look for faeries with you, Jago?"
JAGO: "Yes, of course you may, Bogart. Come. Sit on my lap and let's watch closely for faeries in the garden."
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 11th of March is “backside”. When I came across Bogart and Jago looking for faeries in the garden through the window, I thought their backsides would be perfect for the theme. I hope that you think so too, and that it makes you smile!
Jago is a recent addition to my ever-growing family. A gift from a dear friend in England, he is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
SCOUT: "Daddy! Daddy, Aurora and I are back from Mummy Marian's! We're very hungry and thirsty after whizzing around on my new Scooter that I was given for my birthday by mijn beste vriend Peter! Now we have grumbly tummies, don't we Aurora?"
AURORA: "Oh yes we do, sweet Scoutie! Grumbly tummy Scoutie! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.
SCOUT: "Oh look! Daddy was true to his word! I warned him that we were coming back here for tea and he has put out the tea things for us, and he brought out Dolly for me! Hullo Dolly!" *Gives Dolly a cuddle.* "I missed you!"
DOLLY: *Remains silent in Scout's paws.*
AURORA: "Oh look, Scoutie! The tea set has cute little faeries on it!"
SCOUT: "Oh! Daddy tells us that they are called Pixies, Aurora, not faeries."
AURORA: "Oh what are Pixies, Scoutie?"
SCOUT: "They are like faeries, but they are English, like Daddy."
AURORA: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Oh and look, Scoutie! It is set up just for two!"
SCOUT: "Yes, for you and me, Aurora!"
AURORA: "Oh that is nice of Daddy. Then I can sit next to you and maybe... maybe we can bump noses!" *Giggles.*
SCOUT: "Well I..." *Blushes pink beneath woollen plush.*
DADDY: "Oh! Hullo Scout and Aurora! I have just boiled the kettle and made you some tea." *Puts teapot down.* "Did you have a good time?"
SCOUT: "Oh hullo Daddy! Yes we did! We had soooo much fun! Wheeeee!"
AURORA: "Hullo Daddy! We rode around on Scoutie's scooter soooo fast! Wheeeee!"
SCOUT: "But now we are hungry and thirsty! All that whizzing around Mummy Marian's garden has given us grumbly tummies!"
AURORA and SCOUT: "Grumbly tummies, Daddy! Grumbly tummies!" *Rub tummies vigorously.*
DADDY: "Well, just as well I just baked these whilst you were out whizzing around." *Puts down tin.*
AURORA: "Oooooohhhh!" *Intrigued.* "What's inside, Daddy?"
DADDY: "Why don't you open it up and find out, Aurora?"
AURORA: *Carefully opens tin.* "Oooooohhhh! Biscuits! Yummy!"
SCOUT: "Oooooohhhh! You special shortbread biscuits, Daddy! Thank you so much!"
AURORA: "Oh yes, thank you Daddy!"
DADDY: "Now, you two, make yourselves comfortable here on the lawn, eat and drink your fill, and then you can ride around on the scooter around our garden."
SCOUT and AURORA: "Oh thank you Daddy!"
My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464...) and their MummyMarian Kloon (on and off). Aurora (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577235370...) is my bear Nanuk's niece and lives with Mummy Marian after being blown there on a cloud from the North Pole, as both she and Nanuk are Polar Bears. Aurora and Scout have a lot in common and are fast becoming very good friends!
Scout's best friend Peter built a scooter with his own paws as a Birthday present to Scout, who recently turned six. Scout used the magic portal between Mummy Marian's house and our house here in Australia and took his new scooter with him so that he could ask his friend Aurora to go for a ride with him. You can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54420350277/in/faves-4... or in the first comment below. After whizzing around very fast for a while, they decided that it was high time they stopped for tea, but back here at our house, so they warned me, and I had just enough time to set out the tea things and boil the kettle before they whizzed through the magic portal on Scout's scooter and arrived to take tea in our garden in the beautiful autumnal sunshine.
This beautiful tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features two cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with pixies enjoying different pastimes. The set is very rare. I acquired it from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set and a 1920s faerie tale tea set. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the spoon in the sugar bowl is an Eighteenth Century mustard spoon and is sterling silver.
Thank you very much to Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of her photo of Aurora in my photo montage.
LITTLE LADYBIRD: "Oh!" *Gasps.* "Look Scout and Rosie! A Christmas tree is growing in the garden!" *Claps paws in delight.* "Daddy's house really is magic!"
SCOUT: "Well of course it is magic, Little Ladybird, because Daddy is magical!"
ROSIE: "He is magicked by love, Little Ladybird."
LITTLE LADYBIRD: "That is so special, Rosie!" *Smiles shyly.*
PADDY: "Hullo Scout, Rosie and Little Ladybird."
SCOUT, ROSIE and LITTLE LADYBIRD: "Hullo Paddy!"
ROSIE: "Ooooh! What's that you have there in your paw, Paddy?" *Intrigued.*
PADDY: "It's a single sock - a Christmas sock."
SCOUT: "Oh it is so... so... so..."
PADDY: "Christmassy, Scout?" *Helpful.*
SCOUT: "Soooo bright and pretty! Whose is it?"
PADDY: "Well, I was just coming to ask you and Rosie if it belonged to you. I also found a small black leather diary. Is it either of yours?"
SCOUT: *Shakes head.* "I wish the sock was mine, as it is soooo pretty, but it is not, and my diary is pink and covered in stickers, so it isn't mine. Sorry Paddy."
ROSIE: "And my diary is pink with sparkles, so it isn't mine either, Paddy. Sorry."
PADDY: "Oh that is alright, Scout and Rosie. I don't suppose they are yours, Little Ladybird, are they?"
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Smiles shyly, shakes head, puts paw to mouth and blushes red beneath black and white ladybird plush.*
SCOUT: "Paddy!" *Lowers voice.* "Remember, Little Ladybird doesn't know how to read or write. What use would a diary be to her?"
PADDY: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth and blushes pink with embarrassment beneath plush fur.* "Oh I didn't think of that."
SCOUT: "Well luckily, I did, Paddy!" *Proud.*
ROSIE: "Where did you find them, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Here, in the garden. The diary was on the ground near the magic portal to Mummy Marian's, and the sock was hanging from the door of the portal."
SCOUT: "Well, if it was there, it stands to reason that it belongs to someone or somebear at Mummy Marian's house." *Nods seriously.*
PADDY: "That's good thinking, Scout."
ROSIE: "Have you looked inside to see if there is a name, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Rosie!" *Shocked.* "I would never read someone or somebear else's diary!"
ROSIE: "Well, if you just peeped in on the front page where the name usually goes, that would be alright, Paddy."
SCOUT: "You wouldn't be prying, Paddy, unless you opened it up and started reading all the other pages." *Nods enthusiastically.*
PADDY: "Alright, I'll take a peek." *Opens diary and reads name.* "Hhhhmmm... it says Dobby."
ROSIE: "Dobby, Paddy?"
PADDY: "That's right. Do you know of a bear called Dobby at Mummy Marian's house?"
ROSIE: *Shakes head slowly.* "No I don't, Paddy. There is Benny. Are you sure it doesn't say Benny?"
PADDY: "I am, Rosie. It definitely says, Dobby. What about you, Scout? Do you know a Dobby at Mummy Marian's house?"
SCOUT: "Hhhmmm..." *Thinks hard.* "Well Paddy, I have heard of a Dobby at Mummy Marian's, but I have never met him, and I wonder whether he actually exists."
PADDY: "Who is Dobby, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, mijn beste vriend Peter..."
ROSIE: "Who also happens to be mijn prins!"
SCOUT: "You know mijn beste vriend and Rosie's prince, Peter, don't you Paddy?"
PADDY: "Of course I know Peter, Scout! How could you think I wouldn't?"
SCOUT: "Well, you are rather ancient, Paddy, coming from ye olden days when the world was black and white, so your memory is likely to suffer from old age."
PADDY: "Scout! What have I... The world wasn't... oh!" *Sighs heavily.* "Oh never mind! What did Peter say about Dobby, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, Paddy says that Dobby is a shy house-elf. Maybe the sock is his too."
PADDY: "Hhhmmm... maybe Scout. It does stand to reason. I think I might visit mijn beste vriend Oleg at Mummy Marian's and see if he knows where this Dobby might be. Thank you for your help, Scout and Rosie... oh and you too, Little Ladybird."
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Blushes again and smiles shyly.*
SCOUT and ROSIE: "Goodbye Paddy and good luck!"
Tom the Christmas Gnome travels around the world to cheer up those who are sad so that they can have a merry Christmas. The other day he met Dobby the shy house-elf at Mummy Marian's house. Dobby was sad because he had lost his sock and his diary. You can see them here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54983614298/in/photost... or in the first comment below. Being a good and kind Christmas Gnome, Tom went to see the Christmas Bear, who is a good friend of his, to see whether he could help to find the sock and the book. Consulting a magical crystal ball, the Christmas Bear discovered that the sock was stuck in the door of the magic portal between Mummy Marian's and Daddy Jesse's house, as you can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54986606452/in/photost... or in the first comment below. Let us hope that Paddy reunites the sock and diary to their rightful owner soon!

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, includng the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
Lovingly handmade in Merrythought’s historic British factory in Ironbridge, Shropshire, Little Ladybird’s creation has been inspired by the English country garden. Crafted from the finest black and white short mohair and featuring a pure wool felt ladybird ‘shell’ adorned with embroidered spots, she a pair of ‘antennae’ to finish her off. Little Ladybird is number 3 of a limited edition of 300 issued worldwide.
PADDY: "Ssshhh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "I'm observing a moment of silence for those who have fought for us so that everybody and everybear can live in peace and freedom."
On the first Armistice Day, on 11 November, 1919, the two minutes silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony at the new Cenotaph in London. The silence was proposed by an Australian journalist working in Fleet Street, Edward Honey. At about the same time a South African Statesman made a similar proposal to the British Cabinet, which endorsed it. King George V personally requested all the people of the British Empire to suspend normal activities for two minutes on the hour of the Armistice ‘which stayed the world wide carnage of the four preceding years and marked the victory of Right and Freedom’. The two minutes silence was popularly adopted and it became a central feature of the commemorations of Armistice Day from then on.
As we take a moment this Armistice Day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace, prosperity and stability, and those who fight today to protect us still, let us also hope that conflicts around the world will come to a swift conclusion, not least of all in Ukraine and in Gaza.
Lest we Forget.
Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. It falls on the 11th of November every year. Remembrance Day is marked at eleven o’clock (the time that the armistice was declared) with a minute’s silence to honour the fallen. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.

DAISY-MAUD: “Oh! What a pretty hedge this is!”
JAGO: “Yes it is, Daisy-Maud.”
PADDY: “Daddy, do you think you could take a picture of us in front of the hedge for Mummy June?”
DADDY: “Of course I can, Paddy. That’s an excellent idea! I’m quite sure she would love that.”
BOGART: “Perhaps you could post it on Flickr so then, Mamma Kim can see it too!”
SCOUT: “And all of our other bear friends, their Mummies and Daddies and all our other Flickr friends!”
DADDY: “That sounds like an excellent idea. Now, arrange yourselves nicely so I can take your picture.”
BOGART: “Will you put your paw around me, Jago. I like it when you do.”
JAGO: “Of course I will, Bogart. I’d be honoured.”
DAISY-MAUD: “And I will sit next to you Jago, my big brother.”
PADDY: “Come along Scout. Why don’t you stand between me and Daisy-Maud.”
SCOUT: “Oh yes, and that way there is room for Dolly too!”
DADDY: “Very nice! Now, can everybear say ‘grumbly tummies’.”
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, JAGO and DAISY-MAUD: “Grumbly tummies!”
*Camera goes click and whirr.*
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 3rd of June is “meet cute”, and what could personify cuteness more than bears? For anyone who follows my photostream, you will know that my bears feature quite significantly, and I think they are all very, very cute. They bring me a great deal of joy, and solace when I need it too, as I have very much as of late as I wade though unchartered territory in my life. My bears give me security and love, and they help to inspire my creativity. In this shot we have from left to right: Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Scout (holding Dolly) and Paddy. If you wish to know their stories, I have listed their biographies below. I hope that you like my choice for this week’s them, and that like they do for me, they make you smile!
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. BOGART: "Hullo Daisy-Maud!"
DAISY-MAUD: "Hullo Bogart!"
BOGART: "Ooooh! That's a beautiful crochet poppy you are wearing! It is such a pretty red!"
DAISY-MAUD: "Yes Bogart. It matches your pretty red bow." *Tickles Bogart under the chin.*
BOGART: *Giggles.* "But I thought blue was your favourite colour, Daisy-Maud. You and Jago both love blue."
DAISY-MAUD: "I do, Bogart, but this is a special poppy which bears and their Mummies and Daddies only wear today, and it must be red."
BOGART: *Scratches head with paw.* "Why Daisy-Maude? It is so pretty. You should wear it any day you like, and I know I love red, but why must it be red?"
DAISY-MAUD: "Well, this poppy is a Remembrance Day poppy, Bogart."
BOGART: "Ooooohhh..." *Puts paw to mouth.* "Tell me more about it, please, Daisy-Maud."
DAISY-MAUD: "Well Bogart, today is Remembrance Day. The poppy became a symbol for Remembrance Day because it was a flower that bloomed across the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I, despite the destruction. The vibrant red symbolized the blood of fallen soldiers, and the flower's resilience represented life and hope after the war, as captured in the poem 'In Flanders Fields', which is a very famous poem about the War. We will observe a minute of silence for those who have fought for us so that everybody and everybear can live in peace and freedom at eleven o'clock."
BOGART: "Ooooohhh! There is something similar today in America where I came from. It is called Veteran's Day."
DAISY-MAUD: "Yes. They are one and the same thing, Bogart. It is just a different name."
BOGART: "I know I don't have a red Remembrance poppy, but may I observe a minute of silence for those who have fought for us with you, Daisy-Maud?"
DAISY-MAUD: "Of course you can, dear Bogart! I'd like that very much! Ssshhh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "It's eleven o'clock."
BOGART and DAISY MAUD: *Fall silent and reflect.*

Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
JAGO: *Reading.* “Whilst Cinderella was sitting beside the Prince in a lovely alcove, and looking at the moon from under a bower of orange blossoms, she heard the clock strike the first stroke of twelve. She started up and fled away as lightly as a deer.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh my!” *Puts paw to mouth.* “Cinderella forgot her Fairy Godmother’s warning!”
JAGO: “Indeed she did, Daisy-Maud.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh! Please keep reading, Jago. I want to know what happens to poor Cinderella!” *Concerned.*
JAGO: *Reading.* “The Prince followed, but could not catch her. Indeed he missed his lovely princess altogether, and only saw running out of the palace doors a dirty little girl whom he had never beheld before, and of whom her certainly would never have taken the least notice.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Well! I like that!” *Offended.*
JAGO: “What’s wrong Daisy-Maud?”
DAISY-MAUD: “The Prince is perhaps not so deserving of Cinderella as a bride, if he cannot look beyond her rags and recognise her! Look! There is a picture of Cinderella mid transformation from princess to servant girl.” *Points paw to illustration.* “She still looks beautiful, even in her rags and tatters.”
JAGO: “I know, Daisy-Maud. Don’t be too quick to judge the Prince. The tale isn’t over yet.”
DAISY-MAUD: “I’m certainly glad that my bear prince, Benny likes me for who I am, and not just when I am wearing pearls and jewels!”
JAGO: “Oh yes, Daisy-Maud, Benny loves you just as you are, and so do I!”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh I love you too, Jago! You are the best big brother anybear could have! I love spending time with Benny, and I love spending time with you too! You read so beautifully, and story time with you is very special and precious to me.”
JAGO: “That’s so lovely of you to say so, Daisy-Maud! I love story time with you too. I missed our story time whilst you were still living with Mummy June in Norfolk and I was here with Daddy.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Well now we need never be apart again, my wonderful big brother.”
JAGO: “And thanks to the magic portal, you don’t have to be separated from your prince, Benny!”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh yes! I am so grateful to Fairy Mum for making the portal between here and Mummy Marian’s house! We are very lucky bears to live the good life we do, aren’t we Jago?”
JAGO: “Indeed we are, Daisy-Maud. Not all bears get such a nice home to live in, or books of faerie tales to read, or Mummies like Mummy Marian and Mummy June, or Daddies like ours.”
DAISY-MAUD: “I’m glad we are lucky, Jago.”
JAGO: “Me too, Daisy-Maud. Shall I keep reading now?”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh yes please, Jago. Let’s see if Cinderella gets to live as happily ever after as us.”
JAGO: “I think she will, Daisy-Maud.”
Jago and Daisy-Maud are reading my first edition 1920 copy of Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper published by George Sully & Co., illustrated by Margaret Evans Price. Margaret Evans Price was a U.S. toy manufacturer. With her husband, Irving Price, and Herman Fisher, she co-founded Fisher-Price Toys in 1930.
A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her Daddy.
DAISY-MAUD: “Where are you little ones? You are very, very good at hiding Scout, Rosie and Peter!”
PETER: *Giggles.*
ROSIE: *Puts paw to mouth.*
SCOUT: “Shhh!”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle.*
DAISY-MAUD: “Are you hiding underneath the table?” *Looks under the table.* “No.”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle.*
DAISY-MAUD: “Aha! I can hear you!” *Puts paw to mouth and scans the room.* “I bet you are hiding behind the sofa!” *Looks behind the sofa.* “No?”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle.*
DAISY-MAUD: “I can still hear you little ones, so you can’t be far!” *Ponders.* “Are you behind the curtains?” *Looks behind curtains.* “No? Hhhmmm.”
DADDY: “Hullo Daisy-Maud!”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh hullo Daddy!”
DADDY: “What are you doing Daisy-Maud?”
DAISY-MAUD: “Well, I am playing hide-and-seek with Scout, Rosie and Peter. You know how good they are at hiding!” *Winks at Daddy.* “I can hear them giggling, but I just can’t seem to find them, no matter where I look.* “Winks knowingly at Daddy again.*
DADDY: *Spies Scout, Rosie and Peter hiding behind a corner and smiles.*
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All shake their heads at Daddy and put paws to mouths.*
DADDY: “Oh yes! I know Daisy-Maud.” *Winks knowingly back at Daisy-Maud.* “They are such clever hiders! Maybe if you keep looking for a little bit longer.”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle again.*
DAISY-MAUD: “I will Daddy!” *Smiles cheekily.*
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle again.*
DADDY: “Well there is no rush to find them, as long as you are all having fun.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh we are Daddy!”
DADDY: “And when you do find them, please tell them that it is afternoon tea time. I have some delicious home made biscuits fresh out of the oven for everybear.”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All gasp.*
DAISY-MAUD: “But won’t the tea go cold and the biscuits get gobbled up by everybear if I don’t find their hiding place, Daddy?” *Winks at Daddy and smiles again.*
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All look anxiously at one another as they rub their grumbly tummies silently.*
DADDY: “Oh don’t worry, Daisy-Maud, I won’t serve afternoon tea until you find them!”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All sigh quietly with relief.*
DAISY-MAUD: “Oh thank you Daddy!”
DADDY: “My pleasure, Daisy-Maud. I wouldn’t want ay bear to miss out on filling their grumbly tummies!” *Walks away smiling.*
DAISY-MAUD: “Where are you little ones? I am going to find you!”
PETER, ROSIE and SCOUT: *All giggle again.*
My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464... and their Mummy Marian Kloon (on and off) . Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Peter loves Rosie and Rosie loves Peter, so they have become prince and princess to one another. Oleg and Paddy are very similar and have become best friends too. Peter has come to stay at our house, whilst Paddy stays at Mummy Marian’s and visit’s Oleg.
Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her Daddy.
Thank you to Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of her photo of Peter in my photo montage.
FREDDY: "Hullo everybear, fox, dog and every Mummy and Daddy. Daddy knows that whilst I may be small in size, I am big in heart" *Blushes.* "Therefore, Daddy thought I would be the best to wish everybear, fox, dog and every Mummy and Daddy a very happy Saint Valentine's Day! It seems especially apt when he gave me this wonderful Saint Valentine’s Day card to share with you all. Look! That’s me on the front!” *Proud.* “May your Saint Valentine’s Day be filled with happiness and love! As the Saint Valentine’s Day card says, I will love you now ands forever. I am sending you all lots of special Saint Valentine's snuffly foxy kisses!" *Blushes even more.*
For anyone who follows my photostream, you might be aware I am very fortunate to be surrounded by some wonderfully artistic and creative friends. This includes my very dear friend Maria who creates some truly beautiful and amazing cards from recycled paper and cardboard. From time to time she also hand colours cards. She created this Saint Valentine’s Day card for me to give this year, and I feel very honoured indeed. If you want to see more of Maria’s work, visit her Instagram page at: www.instagram.com/daisyandme33/?hl=en
Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.
The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree:
the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 9th of July is “from the ground” (and look straight ahead). The thought that struck me for the theme was to have a toy left on the floor, forgotten and neglected, but being the old softie that I am, the idea of a neglected toy was too much for my kind heart. So I decided that rather than neglected, my toy should be waiting… patiently… as all good toys do, for when you need them for unconditional love, a cuddle, or to forget the worries and woes of the world, embrace your inner child and just play with them.
For anyone who follows my photostream, you will know that I have a teddy bear family who spend a great deal of time having adventures. There is however another member of my plush family whom I love dearly who comes out on special occasions. If you haven’t met him previously, please allow me to proudly introduce Chippy the monkey whom I have had since I was four years old (that’s a long, long time ago). The morning I photographed him, I knew the dappled sunlight from my garden would stretch into my office for a short while, so I waited until the time was right, just as Chippy waits for me to come and give him a cuddle or tell him a secret. Although Chippy is brown, I added a subtle sepia tone to give my shot more of a reminiscent feel. I hope you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile.
Chippy the monkey came to live with me when I was four. His name is derived from his innards, which are broken chips of hazelnut shells. He was made in America some time in the mid Twentieth Century. He features beautiful brown glass eyes, a felt face, hands and feet. He was given to me by one of my Grandfather's friends who worked in a small high street toy shop which sold a mixture of new, vintage and antique toys. Chippy was vintage at the time, and had been well loved prior, so with a few holes, some worn plush and patches, he was too worn to be sold, but my family friend knew that my gentle nature and respect for my toys meant he could find a new home with me for a long time. All these decades later, she was proven right, for he still lives with me; a bit more loved, a bit more worn and with a few more patches. He also has some red chalk marks on his right hand which I remember putting on him by accident when I was six! He wanted to draw a rose on my chalkboard and I helped him do it!
PADDY: *Sips tea.* "So, you are settling well here at Daddy's house, Garnet?"
GARNET: "Oh yes thank you, Paddy!" *Sips tea.* "Everybear is so nice here at Daddy's house, and Daddy is so lovely! How could I not be happy here?"
PADDY: "Oh good, Garnet, because we want you to be very happy here with us."
GARNET: "Well I am, Paddy. Thank you!"
SCOUT: *Skips up to Paddy and Garnet clutching Dolly.* "Hullo Paddy! Hullo Garnet!"
PADDY: "Hullo Scout!"
GARNET: "Hullo little Scout!"
SCOUT: "What are you two doing?"
GARNET: "We're just enjoying the garden beneath this parasol and sipping tea, here on the lawn. Daddy has a very pretty garden."
SCOUT: "Oh he does, Garnet! And do you like being here with us and with Daddy, Garnet?"
GARNET: "I was only just saying to Paddy how happy I am here, and how it shall be my forever home."
SCOUT: "Oh that's good!" *Smiles.* "Now Garnet. I need to ask you a very important question."
GARNET: "Yes little Scout."
SCOUT: "A very, VERY important question that is of vital importance!"
GARNET: "Goodness, that does sound important, little Scout!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "What is it that you need to ask me that is so important?"
SCOUT: "And of vital importance, Garnet!" *Nods seriously.*
GARNET: "Oh... oh yes of course, little Scout! What do you wish to ask me that is very, VERY important, and of vital importance?"
SCOUT: "Well, I need to know, do you like Little Red Riding Hood as a faerie tale, Garnet?"
GARNET: "Hhhmmm..." *Ponders for a moment.* "Why yes, I do like Little Red Riding Hood as a faerie tale, little Scout."
PADDY: *Whispering.* "That's a good answer, Garnet."
SCOUT: "Oh! That's good! Phew!" *Wipes forehead with back of paw.* "What a relief!"
GARNET: "And why exactly is that so good, and such a relief, little Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, you see Garnet, Little Red Riding Hood is my most favouritest faerie tale in the whole wide world, EVER!" *Nods emphatically.*
GARNET: "Is that right, Little Scout?"
SCOUT: "Yes Garnet!" *Nods more and cuddles Dolly tightly.*
GARNET: *Quietly chuckles.* "I would never have guessed that." *Winks at Paddy.*
SCOUT: "Oh yes! It is!"
GARNET: "Would you like me to read you the story of Little Red Riding Hood, little Scout?"
PADDY: *Whispering.* "Also an excellent answer, Garnet."
SCOUT: *Gasps.* "Oh! Oh would you, Garnet? Could you?"
GARNET: "Why yes, little Scout."
SCOUT: *Squeals with delight.* "Oh thank you Garnet! That will be soooo much fun! I shall go and fetch the book right now!" *Skips away happily with Dolly.*
GARNET: *Turns to Paddy.* "Little Scout is a sweet little bear, isn't he?"
PADDY: "Yes he is, dear Garnet! Thank you for making him so happy today."
GARNET: "Oh it's my pleasure, Paddy."
PADDY: "I'll get Daddy to make some fresh tea for us. Reading to Scout can leave you with a parched mouth if you aren't prepared."
The parasol that Garnet and Paddy are sheltering under is a child's parasol from the 1920s. It has a little hand painted wooden sailor as a handle. It was made by S. Fox and Company in England.
SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy!" *Frightened.* "Paddy wake up!" *Shakes Paddy roughly.*
PADDY: "Wha.. what?" *Wakes up.* "What is it?" *Looks around.* "Scout! You are crying! What's wrong/"
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! No!' 8buries his face into Paddy's chest.* "I had a bad, bad dream!"
PADDY: "Evidently you did, Scout!" *Cuddles Scout.* "What did you dream about?"
SCOUT: "I dreamed about Peter! You know my allerbeste vriend Peter, don't you, Paddy?"
PADDY: *Rolls eyes.* "Of course I do, Scout! We all know Peter. What was it you dreamt about him?"
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! It was soooo real! In my dream, my allerbeste vriend Peter heard a knocking on the door of the Magic Portal in Mummy Marian's garden. Curious as mijn beste vriend Peter is, he went to see who is knocking on the door."
PADDY: "Who was there, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well that's just it, Paddy! he thought it was me, wearing a scary looking black hood!"
PADDY: "Well it couldn't be, Scout. You don't have anything black in your wardrobe!"
SCOUT: "Exactly, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Plus, you were asleep... dreaming... err... about Peter seeing you."
SCOUT: "I know!"
PADDY: "What happened then, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, then mijn allerbeste vriend Peter called my name and then he screamed, and then, it went all black... and... and then... I woke up... and then I woke you up!"
PADDY: "There, there Scout." *Gives Scout a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss.* 'It was only a dream. Let me wipe away those tears." *Wipes Scout's eyes with paw.* "I'm sure Peter is fine."
SCOUT: "But it was soooo real, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Dreams, especially bad ones, always seem so real, Scout. But I'm sure Peter is fine."
SCOUT: *Sniffles.* "Do you really think so, Paddy?"
PADDY: "I do, Scout. Peter will be having fun playing hide-and-seek with Aurora and begging mijn beste vriend Oleg to come and play."
SCOUT: "Oh I hope so, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Come snuggle down with me and I will tell you a faerie tale to help you go back to sleep."
SCOUT: "Oh thank you, Paddy." *Sniggles down next to Paddy under the covers.*
PADDY: "Once upon a time..."

Oleg and Paddy are very similar and have become best friends. Peter and Scout are very similar, so they have become best friends too. Peter heard a knocking at the Magic Portal in the garden at Mummy Marian's and he went to answer it. he thought it was Scout, but it wasn't. The question is, who was it? literally: THERE ARE MORE HOUSES THAN CHURCHES
My mother often used this expression when something didn't work out the first time.
What is the meaning of;'There are more houses than churches? There is plenty of choice, One must not be discouraged even if one does not succeed immediately with a suitor, a service, a servant, a house,.
You also hear "There are more bosses than churches"'.

Mijn moeder gebruikte deze uitdrukking vaak als iets niet direct de eerste keer lukte.
Wat is de betekenis van Er zijn meer huizen dan kerken? Nederlandse spreekwoorden F.A. Stoett (1923-1925) Er zijn meer huizen dan kerken D.w.z. er is keus genoeg, Men moet zich niet laten ontmoedigen al slaagt men niet aanstonds met een vrijer, een dienst, een dienstbode een huis,.

SCOUT: “Paddy! Paddy!”
PADDY: “What is it Scout? Are you alright?”
SCOUT: “Yes Paddy, I’m fine, but… but… but…”
PADDY: “But what, Scout?”
SCOUT: “I need help, Paddy! I need to study up on aaretrrt ..nev....err.”
PADDY: “Help on what, Scout?” *Confused.*
SCOUT: “On aaretrrt ..nev....err, Paddy.”
PADDY: “Art never, Scout?” *Scratches head with paw.* “I don’t understand, Scout.”
SCOUT: “Well, mijn best vriend Peter… You know mijn allerbeste vriend, don’t you, Paddy?”
PADDY: “Well of course I do, Scout! Everybear knows Peter. What about him?”
SCOUT: “Well, mijn allerbeste vriend Peter has gone to a museum with Mummy Marian, and her daughter Diana and baby Rune! There is an exhibition all about flowers painted on furniture and mirrors and books and things that come from ye olden days when the world was black and white, although someone must have painted the things in the museum after the ancient black and white days were over, because they are in beautiful colours. And all those things are in a style called aaretrrt ..nev....err, and I want to be able to talk to mijn beste vriend Peter about aaretrrt ..nev....err too, so he can tell me all about it!”
PADDY: “Oh! Now I understand! Mijn allerbeste vriend Oleg told me that Mummy Marian, Diana and baby Rune were going to the Drents Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde to see an exhibition called “Power to the Flower”. Peter must have decided to go too.”
SCOUT: “That’s right! That’s it!” *Jumps up and down with excitement.* “They have gone to see the aaretrrt ..nev....err at the museum!”
PADDY: “Well, you must have misheard, Peter, Scout, because the style of art they are showing isn’t called ‘Art Never’, it’s called ‘Art Nouveau’, which means ‘new art’. I can help you with finding out more about Art Nouveau because Daddy loves Art Nouveau very much, and he has lots of books on it. I’ll get one.” *Goes and fetches a book on Art Nouveau from Daddy’s library.*
SCOUT: “Looks through book.* “Ooooohhh! Look Paddy! Pretty things! And there are lots of flowers on them too!”
PADDY: “Yes Scout, Art Nouveau is very pretty, and yes, flowers were the main motif that was used. Look, here are some roses that have been made by one of Daddy’s favourite Art Nouveau designers, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.”
SCOUT: “Sooooo pretty, Paddy!” *Sighs.*
