Horse riders in Victorian fashion costume, Nice, France. 2012

Four people pose on log rafts by the river with Tokaj railway bridge in the background, Hungary, 1938.

Vintage letter scale and ink pot.

The love letters I bought online and I wish I could return them to the family of Ben who wrote them, he was very much in love with Mary Elizabeth.

The letters come from the U.S. so how they ended up in the Netherlands is a mystery to me.

The woman in the photo is my paternal grandmother Lilli.

The cell phone is how we communicate mostly today, not very romantic :)

A black-and-white photograph of Dubrovnik, Croatia, taken in 1959, featuring the old city walls and calm Adriatic waters with small boats.

I set this old 35 mm camera on the worn out wooden bed liner of the 1960s Chevrolet pickup truck.

It was my wife's camera. It is not working right anymore. She put it in the large box with others years ago. Recently, she unpacked the boxes and discovered this, and was about to toss it away, I told her, "No, I want it!" So, I am using it as my "model".

Oh, I am a Canon user. 😬

Sepia-toned photograph of a group of men and women in vintage clothing, taken outdoors in Máriaremete, Hungary, 1935.

Don'tcha love a vintage photo? She never would have used the stick...on anybody or anything. Maybe it was a wooden toy gardening hoe... who knows. That's my little sister.... the animal lover and whisperer.... kindest person I know.

Nothing like me at all.

a photo of a snapshot of course....

"Bumblebearies"

If you are from the "South" (Southeast USA), and actually refer to yourself as someone from the "South", then this picture may be all too familiar. Dirt roads serve as main access to the country. They are as rough as the folk who sometimes live down them. Their ruts, dusty, bruised, and forgotten, hold the stories from days passed. Sometimes they could be a little long for comfort, yet often they were not long enough.

Vintage photos seen at Fosshotel Westfjords.

A little bit spooky, a little bit remote, surrounded by a wild sea and big with high ceilings and most likely some household help. Breakfasts in bed. A vintage sporstcar in the driveway. Sigh. I'll just have to settle for this vintage photo.

Sepia-toned group portrait of schoolgirls and their teacher taken outside a brick building in Budapest, 1925.

Black-and-white photograph of a woman using binoculars to survey a scenic valley view in Hungary during the 1950s. Magyary-Kossa Katalin

Vintage black-and-white family portrait taken in Hungary during the 1930s, by Foto Grunwald studio.

8x10, Experimental piece. I used acrylic paint over a photocopy of a vintage picture I found. This may be useful in a collage.

This came from a batch of studio photos that were evidently created for advertising purposes.

My Dad (a Canadian soldier with the Seaforth Highlanders) and my Mum, in Sheffield during the war years, but, before she was my Mum.. that's her on the right side of the photo. No clue which year. . or even why he was in Sheffield at that time..because I think his regiment was in Italy.

We never knew what the exact story was... and, we may have made a simple query or two..but, not much more. Sometimes our questions got answers..sometimes not. We don't know much about them or those years at all.

Dad didn't want to talk much about the war years... and, Mom seemed vague on a lot of it and the rest wasn't much fun to remember. They both did tell us some little funny things or laughable anecdotes on occasion. Like all Brits, she had a great sense of humour even in dire times. Dad...maybe not so much. Who can blame him?

There were hungry miserable years in England and on the fighting front. My Dad could never stomach what he called "Bully Beef" for the rest of his life. It was one of the things they did have to eat..he hated it. He ate it while he was there and never again. Mom could never eat eggs .. she once found an egg after not seeing them for years... broke it open and it was totally rotten... that was it for eggs for her.

Both lost friends, relatives and acquaintances. Mom lived in several houses and was bombed out of several.

The British girls still went dancing ..in blacked out halls hung with heavy curtains.... not a chink of light showing...in case of an air raid.

She said they walked 'home' along tram tracks in the dark and almost got run over by one on a foggy night when they couldn't even hear it coming... it had a little cone of light only shining on the middle of the tracks...

On a day like today I think of what those crappy days and years must have been like for them and for so many.... and, for all those who didn't survive .......

1919 black-and-white photograph showing a group of men at an outdoor garden table in Rákoskeresztúr, Budapest, Hungary.

Today I lost a dear Flickr and Facebook friend. For eight years we commented on each others photos, Flickr-mailed each other, and were part of a group of seven gals on Facebook, spread throughout the world, who have a chat group and have been there for each other through thick and thin. She always had a kind word and could be so funny.

She showed everybody her wonderful city, Budapest, and was able to make us feel as if we have traveled there. She shared her extensive collection of family photos with us and let us know these people throughout many years of her family history. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandma. She was beautiful and had tremendous knowledge of art, music, books, and architecture. Seeing photos of some of the recipes she's posted, she was a fabulous cook and I plan to make one of her recipes in her memory.

This photo of the Tualatin River, taken in 1911 in Oregon, is lacking one thing; it's serene and beautiful, but it doesn't express the color and life that was Nori. She fought a brave battle with her second bout of cancer, but it won out in the end.

I'll miss you Nori and will carry you in my heart.

Mother was born in 1917. I think she was around 20 years old

My mother was a complex person. Events in her life as with many following WWII, gave her a 'no nonsense' attitude - which manifested itself as bluntness. She was vivacious, mischievous, fun and could also be a force to be reckoned with. You didn't upset my mother and get off lightly! Nor could you resist dissolving in tears of laughter at times. Hahahaha! Spirited - yes, that's the word it - she was spirited.

Rural Nebraska 1947....this boy of six in his Sunday Go to Meeting clothes would never guess that these brown high top shoes..( we always had sturdy shoes ).....would someday change into penny loafers, basketball shoes, football cleats, tennis shoes, cowboy boots, Air Force flight boots, business wingtips, flyfishing boots, hiking boots, ski boots and now...comfy grandpa slippers......you just never know what paths you will end up on.... This is my husband and his favorite black cat.

A pair of rickshaws photographed in Malaya or southern Siam – date and location unknown but probably the 1930s in Surat Thani, near the border between the two countries. Perhaps the tramlines are a clue?
