Bragança, is a city and a municipality in north-eastern Portugal and the capital of Bragança District, in Alto Trás-os-Montes. The population of the municipality is 34,774 and its total area is 1,173.6 kmª. It lies on a branch of the Sabor River south of the Culebra Mountains, 255 km northeast of Porto, 515 km from Lisbon and 22 km. from the Spanish border. The city is at an elevation of 700m. Of all of the 18 Portuguese mainland - continental district capitals, Bragança is the farthest from Lisbon, the national capital. The seat of the municipality is the city of Bragança, which consists of two parishes (Sé and Santa Maria) and has a population of about 21,000.[1] The neighbouring municipalities are Vimioso in the southeast, Macedo de Cavaleiros in the southwest and Vinhais in the west.

Bragança é uma cidade portuguesa, capital do Distrito de Bragança, Região Norte e subregião do Alto Trás-os-Montes, com 20 309 na cidade e 25 mil habitantes, no perímetro urbano. É sede de um dos municípios portugueses com maior área, com 1 173,6 km² de área, e 34 375 habitantes (2008), subdividido em 49 freguesias. O município é limitado a norte e leste por Espanha (províncias de Ourense e Zamora), a sueste pelo município de Vimioso, a sudoeste por Macedo de Cavaleiros e a oeste por Vinhais sendo das cidades de Portugal Continental aquela mais setentrional (que fica mais a Norte).
Os celtas baptizaram a cidade, fundada no século II a.C., com o nome de Brigantia, que se foi latinizando até passar a ser Bragança. Este nome é a origem do gentílico mais comum: brigantino.
We drove a little trip into the Parque Natural de Montesinho national park, all the way up to the Spanish border, but the weather didn't invite much photographing. So, we headed south again, towards Vimioso, stopping at some ruins by the small village of Outeiro.
O Palácio do Vimioso é um notável edifício do século XVI que foi construído para a residência do Bispo D. Afonso de Portugal (1485-1522) e seus descendentes, os condes de Vimioso. Tem sofrido grandes alterações ao longo do tempo, nomeadamente as demolições do século XIX e as obras realizadas no final do século XX, que o adaptaram ao novo uso como sucursal da Universidade de Évora .
