Desert View Watchtower, also known as the Indian Watchtower at Desert View, is a 70-foot (21 m)-high stone building located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon within Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, United States. The tower is located at Desert View, more than 20 miles (32 km) to the east of the main developed area at Grand Canyon Village, toward the east entrance to the park. The four-story structure, completed in 1932, was designed by American architect Mary Colter, an employee of the Fred Harvey Company who also created and designed many other buildings in the Grand Canyon vicinity including Hermit's Rest and the Lookout Studio. The interior contains murals by Fred Kabotie.
We have lived here for 8 months, but now I have decided to be obsessed with this area. The cooler temps make it much more inviting. Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Yes, my 4th trip this week. lol
I was hoping to try this a few weeks ago when Flying Scotsman was due to turn on Farington Jn, but today was the first chance I had to see a train crossing over the WCML at the junction. The Desert View Watchtower, constructed in 1932 as a replica of a prehistoric Indian tower, commands a magnificent view of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert to the east and the San Fransico Peaks to the south. This 70 foot (21 meter) tower is the highest point on the South Rim. The interior walls of the tower feature murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.
A beautiful morning view of the canyon and lower falls from Grand View point. It's an amazing view in both directions and you get to feel the enormity of the landscape. The tiny red dot in the lower left is a visitor. Yellowstone National Park, USA, July 2014
We decided to hike table mountain, it started out a very hot day, after making it to the first split in the path up the mountain, we took the wrong turn, and ended up walking along the mountain as opposed to up it (we were given the wrong instructions) so after a long tedious walk along and down the mountain, we had to get the cable car up to the top to get the view we were looking for.
I hate to write generic descriptions for multiple photographs i'm posting but having the ability to upload is very rare here in South Africa, so apologies for the lack of interesting descriptions for each photograph.
These are some of the photos from along the way.
Waip'o'o falls---another of the unmarked viewpoint on the canyon road- this spectacular falls is at least 2800 ft.in elevation dropping around 800 feet- it looks a lot larger because it is so spectacular of a view .and I do believe that it is the source of the river seen snaking through the previous image- "hmm the height of an 80 story bldg!"--View On Black
Waipo'o Falls is a fantastic waterfall on Kokee Stream dropping 800 ft. in two tiers. It is located in the heart of the Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.
The first viewpoint of Waipo'o Falls is located at the signed Waimea Canyon Overlook just past mile marker 10. At this popular turnout, you will find outstanding views of Waimea Canyon and Waipo'o Falls. But you are a long distance away from the falls, so you will need a long lens for your camera as well. There is a second (and much better) viewpoint a couple miles up the road at the unsigned Pu'u Ka Pele Lookout, a roadside turnout just before mile marker 13. Although still quite a distance away from the waterfall, it feels much closer
