The City Hall is one of the most splendid amongst the numerous monumental buildings along Vienna's Ringstrasse. Designed by Friedrich Schmidt (1825-1891), it was erected between 1872 and 1883. The architecture of the Ringstrasse is dominated by historicism. In Historicism various stylistic elements of the past were combined into a style in its own right. Friedrich Schmidt however orientated himself on one particular epoch. The City Hall was built in gothic style, with a tower similar to gothic cathedrals. The gothic era saw the growth of the cities and the emergence of an urban bourgeoisie.

Today the City Hall is the head office of Vienna's municipal administration. (City of Vienna website)

Usally the square in front of the Rathaus is built over with stuff from different events. I was lucky to capture it without them ;).

A tribute to enchanting Vienna and to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose birthday is today. Even as a child prodigy, he inspired Europe with his talent and created over 600 works in his short life, including operas, symphonies, chamber music and concertos. His unique style combines lightness, depth and virtuosity and continues to inspire people around the world to this day. He left behind an immortal musical legacy.

The City Park opened in 1862 and was the first public park in Vienna. It was designed in the style of English gardens and has a total surface area of 65,000 square metres (28 acres). The City Park is the park with the largest number of monuments and sculptures in Vienna.
