Heritage Park
San Diego, CA

A monochrome treatment photographed among the restored Victorian homes in San Diego's Heritage Park.
The building, which incorporates the former Shanklin Town Hall, is a Grade II listed building built in 1879.
Every window, every curve of brick and beam, feels plucked from the pages of a storybook, where characters in top hats and long dresses wait just behind the glass.
Please enjoy the architectural details in Large.
Thank you so much for your visit!
Green Gables Inn
Pacific Grove, CA

The Inn, originally a private home, was built in 1888 by Englishman William Lacy, an amateur architect.
My photo, taken on my "Birthdaycation" in April, is a 6 image HDR focus stack manually composited in Photoshop CC.
Prints available in the Buildings Gallery of the Bridges and Buildings album of my online store.
Grand Parade in Bath from the River Avon, with the rushing waters of the Pulteney Weir obvious.
On the left is the late Victorian mass of the Empire Hotel, as it was. Completed in 1902, it designed by the Bath City Architect Major Charles Edward Davis for the hotelier Alfred Holland and built from Bath Stone. It was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as a ‘monstrosity and an unbelievable piece of pompous architecture’. I rather like it, albeit it IS in fact incredibly pompous to have architecture on the roof showing the three socal classes: a castle on the corner for upper class, a house for the middle classes, and a cottage for the plebs and peasants!
Right of shot is Pulteney Bridge, a bridge over the River Avon in Bath, England. It was completed by 1774, and connected the city with the land of the Pulteney family which it wished to develop in the parish of Bathwick. Designed by Robert Adam in a Palladian style, it is highly unusual in that it has shops built across its full span on both sides. It is a Grade I listed building.
In the centre is spire of St Michael’s Church, a Victorian structure on a site used for Christian worship since medieval times. It was built in 1835-7 to a design by G P Manners with tall and narrow ‘W’ tower. It is Grade II* listed.
To its left, on Grand Parade, is the dome of the 1897 Victoria Art Gallery, also Grade II* listed.

Queen Anne Hotel
San Francisco, CA

This is the sitting room of the Queen Anne Hotel, where I stayed while in San Francisco. It is so rich and "Victorian" that I'm somewhat sad I didn't get to spend more time there, however I was "out and about" taking photos all the time I could. When I was in my hotel, I took advantage of the fact I had it pretty much all to myself and I took lots of photos of the richly appointed rooms.
Christ Church is a Grade II* listed church in Cricklade Street in Swindon's Old Town district. It was built in 1851 to a design by George Gilbert Scott. It has a peal of ten bells memorialised in poetry by Sir John Betjeman:
Now birth and death reminding bells ring clear,
Loud under 'planes and over changing gear.
Originally founded in 1821 with the current structure built in 1841, it operated until a lack of funds resulted in closure in 1917. It was also Elizabeth Baxter Hostel at one stage but is now the School of Historical Dress.
John Ford House
Heritage Square Museum
Los Angeles, CA

I was reminded of the quote from "The Wizard of Oz" because of the eye popping colors here and in the photo this looks like a farmhouse, albeit one with two stories. This wasn't a small farm house, but began life as a simple row house in a downtown L.A. tract in 1887.
The original owner, John J. Ford, was a wood carver who worked on the Iolani Palace in Hawaii and the California State Capital building, added his own one of a kind carvings to the house while being built.

Beauriful Lake Vyrnwy and its victorian gothic straining tower (Powys, UK) were constructed in the 1880s to provide a source of water for Liverpool.
This fine terrace building from the Victorian era is part of the wonderful streetscape of Cameron Street (we had a longer look at it in the previous photograph). Those fine arches and the decorative features on the building really stand out in the setting sunlight.
The only intact pre earthquake Victorian mansion in San Francisco which offers tours inside. Built in 1886.
Carson Mansion
Eureka, CA
05-01-22
I'd read that the most famous Victorian mansion in the State of California was a private club before I journeyed to Eureka.
The two days I spent photographing the exterior, near sunset on my first night in town, and early the next morning, were times before and after "business hours" I surmised. I don't know if there was anything going on during the daytime hours.
After I got back home, I googled "Ingomar Club" and found out that it usually boasts about 500+ members, with some being locals, and others being honorary or non resident. Although not displayed on the official club website, other internet searches told me the "buy in" amount was $35,000.00 and you had to be invited or sponsored in order to join.
This weeks Snap Happy theme of 'shades of green' was chosen by Tricia.
A selection of beautiful greens in St.Kilda, including some of the local architecture, cafes, community gardens, shops, the esplanade market, the pier and kiosk and The Palais Theatre too.

Cottesbrooke is one of Northamptonshire's delightful stone-built villages that is based around a country house and its estate. The Grange is the second largest building in the village, and was once just the one house. It has now been divided up into apartments. Although one estate agent seems to think it is Georgian I believe it is actually early Victorian, and was probably connected in some way to Cottesbrooke Hall. The Grange is certainly shown on a map dated 1858 but I can find no other historical references to it. However, it is a very impressive building.
The focal point of Belfast's central business district, its 1898-1906 City Hall with its famous copper dome effectively divides the city's main retail and business districts. It was during this period, at the height of Belfast's industrial heyday, that the city briefly overtook Dublin as Ireland's most populous.
The architect was Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas. The city hall in Durban, South Africa, is virtually identical.
Victorian housing and a former shop converted to a full dwelling, like so much of the country we are losing our small shops and businesses, a trend that was happening way prior to the internet revolution.

The Lansdowne Monument near Cherhill is a dominating feature of the countryside between Devizes and Calne in central Wiltshire, being 38 metres high and atop a high hill. An 1845 folly, built by the 3rd Marquis of Lansdowne. It is photographed here against the western sky, 29 minutes after sunset.
Last September we spent a night at the East Brother Light Station. The bed & breakfast inn sits on a small island located at the border of the San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay near Richmond. Innkeepers Bryan & Stephanie welcomed us with champagne & hors d’oeuvres upon arrival, served us a multi-course dinner with wine, and a gourmet breakfast the next morning. We learned about the history of the lighthouse, and got a demo of the very loud diesel powered foghorn. I took some night shots after everybody went to sleep.
I processed a paintery, a balanced, a photographic, and a realistic HDR photo from four RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Sculptures depicting Commerce, Justice and Britannia, look down benignly from the apex of the Merchant Hotel’s magnificent façade on Belfast’s Waring Street. Originally the headquarters of the Ulster Bank for a century and a half, since 2010 this building has been has been a luxury hotel.
Bank Directors Robert Grimshaw and James Heron visited Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1857 to glean as much information as possible on the best banking buildings. It was their earnest wish that the building should appear elegant, substantial and prosperous. The location was deemed eminently suitable being, as it was then, in the heart of Belfast’s mercantile and commercial centre.
The Glaswegian architect James Hamilton designed an imposing building in High Victorian Italianate style executed in Giffnock sandstone.
The Merchant Hotel is located in the Cathedral Quarter nightlife district.

Ilfracombe is a seaside resort town on the north Devon coast. Unusually, the sandy beaches which ring the town can be accessed only through tunnels bored through the surrounding rocks. The beautiful natural harbour and the stunning coastal scenery have made Ilfracombe a magnet for visitors since the Victorian period. Regular boat service links Ilfracombe with Lundy Island.
