And this is the view overlooking the main courtyard of the old Mount Royal Hospital. This 1875 Victorian building would have many stories to tell. On three sides we can walk around this covered verandah.

Originally this courtyard was fully enclosed, but the buildings at the end were demolished. The only survivor from 1950 is the old kiosk which I showed you in an earlier shot.

Here at the Yeoman Hey Reservoir we can see the water outlet tower more clearer because of the low water levels, Built in 1880 it controls the flow of water out of the reservoir by the use of opening and closing valves within the tower.

The embodiment of industrial heritage and timeless beauty. Nestled in the picturesque countryside, its majestic presence evokes a sense of awe and wonder. The sturdy architecture, with its exceptionally tall chimney and intricate detailing, speaks of a time when textile manufacturing was at its peak.

This looks like the oldest house in the neighbourhood. Certainly the oldest surviving one in a new building estate. Built in the 19th century, this old piece of Victoriana has been lovingly maintained. It makes a striking image in the fading light. It won't be long before it is surrounded by new generic housing designs. Arghh.

I've been meaning to make my own albumen photographic paper. This might be a good digital negative to work with. It has the right feel for the brown albumen prints.

Last year I photographed the fine Rustic Gothic manor house "The Grange", and gave it a romantic feel (link below). In the previous shot today, I described how this unique house came to be built in the colony in 1847, with a link to more information about its fascinating owner, Dr William Valentine, the surgeon and naturalist.

In this photograph I will again steer us into an artistic interpretation through the use of black and white. The light was perfect for it and that white picket fence is incorporated to create a sense of "distance" between us and this gothic building.

This shot taken not far from the township of Evandale, shows an old Victorian mansion under restoration. It has stood imposingly in the landscape for over 150 years, and now it is time for a makeover.

Please enlarge this photograph and look at the impressive decorative stonework over the main entrance. As with most old properties around here, much care is taken (often under the watchful eye of Heritage Tasmania) to restore these buildings to a state that closely resembles its original glory.

At least some of the detail has been saved.

There has been a beacon at Low Head since the settlement was first founded in 1805. This is the third oldest continuously running lighthouse in Australia.

The first tower was built by convicts in 1833, but the structure soon wore out. The current one was constructed in 1888 (the centenary of the founding of Australia) along very Victorian architectural lines. The building on the left houses the only remaining fog horn in Tasmania. This is what it sounds like:

Broke a long journey in Great Malvern last night and grabbed this shot of the tower of the Priory above the Abbey Hotel. Lucky light. I suppose one needs to know how to make the most of one's luck!

Great Malvern Priory in Malvern, Worcestershire, England, was a Benedictine monastery (ca. 1075 – 1540) and now a Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Worcester.

The present building dates from 1085, with mainly 15th-century structure, floor, and wall tiles. Extensions to the original Norman architecture church began around 1440 in the Perpendicular style, including the great square central tower, and work continued until 1502.

On the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1541, local people raised £20 to buy the building to replace their decaying parish church. Much later, by 1788, it was the Priory which had fallen into disrepair. It was partly restored in 1812 and again in 1816, 1834 and 1841 before a careful restoration was carried out in 1860 under the direction of Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Inside, it has the largest display of 15th-century stained glass in England, as well as carved miserichords from the 15th and 16th century and the largest collection of medieval floor and wall tiles.

As much of the contemporary Priory is Victorian, so is the Abbey Hotel which it overlooks. It was built in 1848 by William Archer to cater for the growing number of spa visitors to the town.

I didn't post too many "Hallowe'en" themed photos this season. In fact, I didn't even make my annual trip to Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles to add another skull to my "Calaveras Collection."

Here is a photo of famous horror author Stephen King's house, noted to be the second most photographed house in America (after Graceland in Memphis Tennessee, the home of Elvis Presley).

When I visited Maine in the Fall of 2019, my plane landed in Bangor, I picked up my rental car, and within an hour I was standing out in front of what is now officially the "Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation" a writer's retreat, not a residence where King actually sits down in front of his computer and turns out one of his million novels.

I used the Aurora HDR program heavily on the processing here. Although since it's past Hallowe'en now, I brightened the image up rather than darkened it so it looks more "spooky".

Grand Parade in Bath from the River Avon, with the rushing waters of the Pulteney Weir obvious.

On the left is the late Victorian mass of the Empire Hotel, as it was. Completed in 1902, it designed by the Bath City Architect Major Charles Edward Davis for the hotelier Alfred Holland and built from Bath Stone. It was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as a ‘monstrosity and an unbelievable piece of pompous architecture’. I rather like it, albeit it IS rather pompous.

Right of shot is Pulteney Bridge, a bridge over the River Avon in Bath, England. It was completed by 1774, and connected the city with the land of the Pulteney family which it wished to develop in the parish of Bathwick. Designed by Robert Adam in a Palladian style, it is highly unusual in that it has shops built across its full span on both sides. It is a Grade I listed building.

In the centre is spire of St Michael’s Church, a Victorian structure on a site used for Christian worship since medieval times. It was built in 1835-7 to a design by G P Manners with tall and narrow ‘W’ tower. It is Grade II* listed.

To its left, on Grand Parade, is the dome of the 1897 Victoria Art Gallery, also Grade II* listed.

This attractive looking Victorian-era building is the Launceston State Government Building. The Premier of Tasmania uses this office when in the city. A tablet was placed on this building in 1942 to mark the 300th anniversary since the European discovery of Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Activists have tried to have it removed. But why should we pretend history didn't happen?

Caban coch dam 'topping' at the Elan valley, Powys, Wales, UK

The lowest of the dams in the sequence of four built in the valley of the Elan River is Caban Coch Dam. It is the simplest and most functional in appearance of all the dams, resembling a natural waterfall when the reservoir is full and the dam is in full spate with water pouring over the dam wall.

Caban Coch is the first of the four dams to be built, with work starting in 1894.

I've photographed the structures at the museum before, but not with cloudscapes like this in the sky.

Testament to the wealth that was Victorian

London's meat industry.

As we pull back from the previous image can you see what I can see? Could you imagine this photograph being taken in Andalusia in southern Spain (when ruled by the Moors)? Could you imagine this to be an example of Muslim architecture in many parts of the world? The sunlight bathing the scene and reflecting off the columns is certainly consistent with such scenes.

And yet, here we are in 1875, at the pinnacle of the Victorian era where the Gothic revival was well and truly underway in England, and we find this in a state institution on the other side of the world. I find that amazing. And so beautiful! If I were an "inmate" in the exercise yard I showed you yesterday, this scene would have given me a sense of beauty in the midst of a harsh world.
