The Rotterdam World Port Days - cancelled in 2020 'cause of the Covid pandemic, a crippled edition (partly online) in 2021 (same reason). And now fully back.

Shown here is the Aqua Helix. It is a fast crew supplier (capacity: 122 passengers), built by Damen Shipyards. Prominent features of the ship are its radical wave piercing and stability-enhancing axe-bow and the Ampelmann, motion-compensated telescoping gangway, used to offer offshore workers easy access to oil rigs, wind turbines etc. The Ampelmann will be shown in the next post.

The Aqua Helix is operated by Ocean Express, a joint venture of Damen and Ampelmann. According to a Damen spokesman (who was part of the design team) we met aboard the vessel, it offers a more efficient and more safe offshore crew transport solution than the helicopter. does.

More info about the aluminium hulled ship (for the 'tech nerds'): “Four MTU engines drive HamiltonJet propulsion units via Reintjes VLJ-type gearboxes to deliver a maximum speed of 40 knots and a range of 800 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 37 knots. COLLISION WITH MOORING BOLLARDS

Avalon suffered significant damage to her starboard side while transiting the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal at around 10 am on 1st. March 2018, having sailed from Antwerp, Belgium bound for Sluiskil, Holland.

The ship collided, due to strong winds, with mooring bollards near Terneuzen causing breaches several metres in length and a crack in a ballast water tank. A salvage company moved the ship to the quay at Terneuzen-Sas van Gent, and ship traffic was not hampered.

The ship left Terneuzen at 2.40 pm on 2nd. March and moored at Hans Weert at 3.40 pm where repairs were started by Shipyard Reimerswaal in Hansweert.

Avalon left Hansweert at 10.20 am on 5th. June and headed to Rotterdam, where it moored in the Merwe Port at 8.40 pm to await orders.

FIRE IN ENGINE ROOM.

During the afternoon of 19th. March 2020, a fire broke out in the engine room of DC Vlaanderen 3000 which had moored in the commercial port of Breskens at 1.50 p.m. after arriving coming from Zeebrugge, Belgium. The fire could was extinguished by the crew who flooded the engine room with CO2 and brought the situation under control. The deployment of the fire brigade was not necessary.

To be on the safe side, it was decided to leave the engine room closed until the morning of 20th. March when fire fighters from Breskens and Oostburg attended at around 08:00 a.m. so that the engine room could be opened in a controlled manner and, where necessary, remaining hot spots immediately extinguished. However there was no longer any fire. The entire ship had to be ventilated due to high CO2 values. In the early afternoon the firefighters were stood down.

STOWAWAYS FOUND ONBOARD.

Three Albanian stowaways were found inn the generator room aboard Fast Jef during the transit of the Kiel Canal on 3rd. September 2021. They were disembarked in Kiel- Holtenau. One of them was in possession of a biometric passport. The two others were subject of an investigation for unpermitted entry of the country and taken into custody in Kiel. The three probably had got on board in Antwerp. The ship proceeded to Næstved, Denmark.
