A "cool" glimpse of Lake Superior's shoreline one morning last week.
This one's for the Lightbox, I think..
Last abstract macro image of the old car (for now). This isn't on the front left fender, as with the past two days' images; the entire surface of the beast is fantasy land.
This small panel near the right rear changes incrementally as the frigid winters, searing summers, and wind-driven sand blasting take their toll. Top to bottom this measures little more than an inch. The black has always struck me as something akin to deep space, a deeper dimension that feels to me like infinity. Yes, it's "only" an old car in a field. But it has also become a conduit of sorts for me over the years, a way to free up my imagination. As its layers peel off due to age and exposure, some part of myself peels off, too. I'm never sure what I'll find. The key to the universe? A deeper appreciation of the mysterious?
Questions are the life blood of any artist. Or, turning it around, I'll quote Picasso, who phrased it so eloquently: "Computers are useless; they can only give you answers."
One more car shot, coming tomorrow, to end this series. Not a macro or close up. Many years ago I had a photography teacher whose parting instruction to the class after handing out an assignment was, "Surprise me!" Tune in tomorrow for a surprise...

this is a fun place in DC, a moving walkway connecting the East and West buildings of the National Gallery of Art. Surrounding the walkway is the "Multiverse", a light sculpture created by American artist Leo Villareal (info obtained from google).

It really was impressive, hanging over the great, expansive prairie. Common advice online is to juxtapose a supermoon against some recognizable object, icon, or landmark, to show how large it really appears. Well... that might not be practical when for miles and miles in all directions there's essentially nothing. Meanwhile, size of the moon in any photo is dependent on focal length of the lens and how much cropping the photographer can get away with.
I never worry about scale, anyway. Every full moon is a thing of beauty. I probably should have been shooting video, because as the moon rose, a chorus of coyotes wafted to me on the evening air, not far away, and moments later a mule deer doe and buck walked across the field I was standing in, very close, basically ignoring me. To be ignored by deer and serenaded by coyotes under a rising full moon is a very special experience. You might even call it super.

For a month I have been trying to re-capture an image of this Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) touching down on a post in the evening light. I found a natural blind within 120' of this post and then sat for hours, checking my camera settings against the available light, picking the angle for the background, and most important, being aware of the Harrier's movements around the wetland through my binoculars. Yesterday evening, after 3 weeks of waiting, I finally got my opportunity to re-capture this image. The Harrier flew in toward the post, I checked settings, held up my camera, focused on my subject, pressed down on the shutter and it all came together. "Explore" Feb, 3, 2009

You know, you take the shot, then you travel home and wish you would have had a "do over", well, this cemetary is one of them. If you notice in my photo stream, I took a shot of this over a year ago. I did it from the car because there was no parking. So today I got a do-over, I found parking and took a few shots. In the words of James Brown, "I feel good".
