On our last trip to the South West of the USA we also passed the "Moon" (see picture, a panorama of 8 vertical shots, original 18720 x 7214 pixels, 119 MB JPG).
Unfortunately, Cainville Reef Road (or West Factory Butte Road) was not as easy to handle as it is on the web. At least 3 places were the pure madness, including a barely surmountable washed out rock, level of about 70 cm, which I could make passable after collecting a lot of stone chunks to equalize the stage. Fortunately, everything went well, but I will not go there again. And there was no time left to climb up the Mesa herself.
Auf unserem letzten Trip in den Südwesten der USA kamen wir auch am "Mond" vorbei (siehe Bild, ein Panorama aus 8 vertikalen Bildern, im Original 18720 x 7214 Pixel, 119 MB JPG).
Leider war die dazu befahrende Cainville Reef Road (alt: West Factory Butte Road) nicht so einfach zu bewältigen, wie im Web verbreitet wird. Mindestens 2 bis 3 Stellen waren der reine Wahnsinn, u.a eine kaum überwindbare ausgewaschene Felstreppe von ca. 70 cm, die ich mit dem sammeln und aufschichten von etlichen Steinbrocken erst befahrbar machen mußte. Zum Glück ging dann doch alles gut, aber noch einmal werde ich dort nicht mehr hin. Und es blieb auch keine Zeit mehr, auf die Mesa zu klettern.

Auf Wunsch des Kurfürsten Carl Theodor von der Pfalz entstand von 1787 bis 1792 der Merkurtempel. Architekt Nicolas de Pigage schlug vor, einen antiken Tempel als Gegenüber zur Moschee zu bauen. Der neue Bau wurde bewusst als Ruine gebaut, um dem Betrachter den Eindruck zu vermitteln, es handele es sich um ein altes, antikes Gebäude. Durch die vulkanischen Tuffsteine und die
halb offene Kuppel wirkt der dreigeschossige und turmartige Ruinenbau verfallen und düster. Das poröse Gestein verweist auf den verwitterten Travertin antik-römischer Bauten. Als Tempel erinnert der Bau außerdem an ein römisches Kuppelgrab – ein weiterer Hinweis auf die Vergänglichkeit
Am Abend eines heissen Sommertages sitzt Pedro gerne auf der alten Bank und geniesst eine Berliner Weisse (von der er überzeugt ist, dass es eigentlich eine BÄRliner Weisse sein müsste) mit Schuss.

(Note: «Berliner Weisse» is a (pretty sour) specialty beer from Berlin which is usually enjoyed with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup.)
