This version of BETAVILLE is made from images photographed off my television monitor and my iPad monitor. Films I stole images from include: Godard’s Alphaville, Les Carabiniers, A Woman Is A Woman and Breathless; Chris Marker’s La Jétee; Jack Cardiff’s Girl On A Motorcycle; Lindsay Anderson’s This Sporting Life; Tony Richardson’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and The Entertainer; Robert Kramer’s Ice; Marco Ferreri’s Don’t Touch The White Woman!; Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter; Pietro Germi’s Divorce Italian Style; John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate; William Richert’s Winter Kills; George Lautner’s Le Professionel; Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers and an eastern-bloc feminist science fiction film that I think is called something like The Hotel At The End Of Time.
BETAVILLE was originally a text-image piece created for DISPATX, an online project organized by David Stent and others. For this version I appropriated texts from: Walter Marchetti, Georganne Deen, Jean-Luc Godard, Yvonne & Ebba Austen, Barrett Watten, Ansuman Biswas, B. June Speaker, K. Lyons, M. Barrios-Solano, H. Bowerman, A.E. Iribas, Gabriele Bonomo, Kodwo Eshun, Indira Suganda, John Byrne, Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez, Carla Harryman, Jon Langford, Mekons, Anna Kavan, Clarence Young, Edward Young, Robert M. Young, Luciana Parisi & Tiziana Terranova, Wilhelm Busch, Charles Dickens, Ann Hughes, Arthur Herman, David Hume, Adam Smith, James Macpherson, Brian Catling & others.
This is a modified version of an original photo by Chris Bertram.
Designed by architect Louis H. Sullivan, on N. Astor St. in Chicago.
According to local lore, the style of this project was significantly influence by then junior draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright.

This wonderful woman is a customer on my UPS route. I have been trying to photograph her for more than 5 years. She finally agreed and here is the results. What a beautiful head of hair. After talking to her for a while I found out that her brother actually taught me history in high school. What a small world.
