Grey birds against a grey sea are not usually popular so I'm not expecting much attention on this one. But this was my fifth visit to Baja and this was the first time I have managed to capture a photo of one. They are a common enough sight off Baja, but they are usually whizzing past at a distance. Similarly Manx Shearwater is a fairly common sight around British coasts but it took me years to get a decent photograph. Actually Black-vented Shearwater was once though to be a Pacific subspecies of Manx Shearwater and the two do look quite similar, apart from the black vent (under the tail) just visible here. Here's a Manx Shearwater for comparison: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52262377959/in/photolist

95% of the world population of Black-vented Shearwater nests on a single island off Baja; Isla Natividad, though a few pairs nest on Guadalupe and San Benitos (which we visited). But like Manx Shearwater they only visit their nesting burrows under cover of darkness. Its scientific name Puffinus opisthomelas simply translates as shearwater with a black behind.

This vent stack is attached to a gas processing station in the oil fields of Romania. When I was there, the vent stack was releasing invisible methane into the atmosphere. I captured the release on a specialised infrared camera that can visualise methane emissions. See the video we produced here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FviUUqeJSOs&list=PLKH65C8nX1i...

Paternoster Vents also known as Vents or Angel's Wings. It is a stainless steel sculpture by Thomas Heatherwick located in Paternoster Square London. The sculpture provides ventilation for an underground electrical substation.

Often used for advertisements, these characters animated by wind are always fun to watch. The key point of the design was: body must be a tube. For the first version, the blue one, there was a single layer per arm, but two for the body. Shaping the tubular body was very difficult with the two layers, so I had to rethink the structure. The final version, the green one, has two layers per arm and a single layer for the body. The arms look less "clean", but the body was simpler to shape and the color-changes were more perfected. I rarely photograph earlier versions, the blue one in this case, but here they pair up nicely.

Spotted these on my friend’s roof, and got the inspiration to morph them into early Daleks.

Black-vented Shearwater is common off the Baja coast but they are usually fast and distant, so getting a photograph isn't easy. I wanted to upload this one because it shows the black vent (the bit between the legs and the tail).
