A few of my favorite days of shooting have come at Venice Beach and the pier. I got spoiled early with several amazing sunsets and skies but then each time got progressively worse. Haze, glare and misty wind happened the last few times and I actually haven't been in a couple months maybe.
On this day, everything was perfect. Easy parking, no crowds a huge, impressive sky and the right kind of tide for reflections. I spent the entire day alternating between quick shutter reflections as well as very long reflections using the 10 stop ND filter. Maybe it's time to give it another chance.

Back in January, it seemed like every day was cloudy and colorful. I went out to shoot almost daily and I suppose didn't realize that the amazingly photogenic weather was more or less an anomaly. The sun would set early and I could leave before rush hour kicked in. I had worried that my shooting would outpace my posting so much, I'd never get to all the photos. In fact, I even skipped shooting a few of the days to give me a chance to review some older ones finally.
Fast forward to the end of April, and it's sunny 6 out 7 days each week and the clouds have been replaced by a thick haze. Often I check both the hourly weather reports of places I'd like to go, as well as the sky in Hollywood to determine if a long trip in traffic to the coastline would be worth it. Half the time, the clouds are gone by the time I arrive at my destination and the haze sets in until the sun goes down and typically ends up feeling like a wasted trip. I've used this opportunity to go back and see many unposted and really unreviewed photos dating to just before I left for California in early December. It's nice to catch up at least.
This shot was from my best day at Venice Beach. The sky was amazing, the colors were bold and the conditions were perfect. I started here in the mid afternoon and stayed for hours until the only visible light on was my iphone flashlight.

On a quick trip to visit family near Sarasota Florida. It funny, the previous 3 times we flew into the Gulf Coast I decided it was for R&R only so I left the photography gear home. This time, there was a slight possibility of getting around so I packed light.
Managed to get a nice sunset under this wonderfully symmetrical pier.

Jasper, IG: @jasper.delegencia, and I had a wonderful shoot at Venice Beach despite the cold weather. The model who just signed with an agency kept the positive attitude in spite of the difficult weather to work in. This up and coming model will do really well.

Tide rolling in to Venice Beach. Santa Monica Mountains in the background, with Malibu further up the coast.
I don't generally go in for HDR shots. I see a lot of them in my social media travels and most of them are rather overdone. In any event, I tried it on a whim and the result amused me because it truly reminds me of some of the CGI in Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. It was 7 AM in Venice and I'd gotten there too late to do the long exposures I'd plan, so at least something came out of the trip.
