Police in Stockport have launched a major new crackdown on car crime in response to the rising amount of incidents across the town.
It follows Operation Gotham and similar operations that have seen a 16 per cent reduction in burglaries this year on the division.
Operation Focus consists of extra high visibility and plain clothed patrols by specialist officers to deter, target and catch those responsible for the offences and those involved in handling stolen property. The operation will also include use of additional forensic examination.
Police are determined to minimise the number of items being stolen from vehicles and are asking the public to support them by removing all items from display and locking their vehicle when leaving it unattended. Since the start of January items such as iPods, laptops, sat navs, mobile phones, air bags, wing mirrors and catalytic convertors have been stolen from vehicles in Stockport.
Superintendent Peter Matthews said: ‘’Since the operation commenced, daily warrants have been executed and arrests have been made as a result of the increased intelligence generated. The clear message to those involved in vehicle crime is that we could be coming for you today.
“Car crime impacts negatively on communities in many ways, but particularly during such hard times, for example by driving up insurance premiums for people living in hotspot areas.
“Motorists can do their bit by parking in secure or well-lit areas wherever possible. They should also close all windows, remove all valuables, especially sat navs and their mounting cradles, lock all doors and activate the immobiliser or alarm if they have one.
“It’ a good idea to register valuables on www.immobilise.com and to security mark them with a postcode and house number or vehicle registration number. Also, keep a record of the make, model and serial number of such items.
“The other assistance we need from members of the public is to report any suspicious circumstances straight away where persons are seen near to unattended motor vehicles so that we can respond quickly and effectively..
“We also need more community information on who may be committing these offences, who is receiving, handling or selling on stolen goods. You can call anonymously with information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

Keep your vehicle safe when you are Christmas shopping.
Greater Manchester Police has unveiled the latest recruits that have been drafted in to help keep people safe during the festive period.
Pupils from St Edmund's RC Primary School, in Miles Platting, Manchester have joined officers to give vital crime prevention advice to people across Greater Manchester.
The Force has been working with the children aged four to 10 to make sure people know how to protect themselves, their family, their home and possessions during Christmas and New Year.
The youngsters star in a series of light-hearted videos that draw attention to various aspects of safety and security. The videos will part of the Force's Advent calendar.
Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said: "Staying safe during Christmas really is child's play if you remember the key advice and the pupils have helped to keep things simple."

Police are asking all motorists to be extra vigilant on icy mornings to keep criminals out in the cold.
During previous winters cars have been stolen across Greater Manchester after being left with the keys in the ignition and engines running while defrosting them.
With low temperatures expected to continue throughout the winter, police are urging motorists to ensure that they are not the next victims to be left out in the cold by simply staying with their vehicle while defrosting them. It may mean sitting in a cold car for a few minutes but it’s a lot better than having your vehicle taken by a passing thief.
Losing your car may also be only be the start of the problem as many insurance companies will not pay out if vehicles are stolen after keys have been left in the ignition.
It is also worth noting that criminals are on the lookout for any valuables that are left in cars so remove them when you lock the vehicle. Even an old coat will tempt a thief as they may think it contains a wallet or mobile phone. Remove everything you can from view.

Never tempt thieves by leaving your car keys in sight.
In recent years Greater Manchester Police has seen an increase in ‘hook and cane’ thefts of motor vehicles. This method of theft employs a garden cane tipped with a hook. The cane is inserted through a letterbox or open window and the hook is used to pick up the keys to a vehicle and property.
Better vehicle security has made it difficult to steal a modern car so thieves have turned their attention to stealing vehicle keys in this manner. Once they have your keys, they can steal your vehicle in seconds.

If you're looking for a way to ensure your vehicle is safe and secure on the roads, then you'll need to pay attention to your brakes. Brake pads are a critical component of any vehicle's braking system, and knowing how much they cost is an important factor in budgeting for car maintenance and repairs.
The cost of brake pads depends on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle, the size of the brake pads, and the quality of the material used. Generally speaking, brake pads can range from as little as $25 a pair up to $200 or more. The most expensive brake pads are usually those made of ceramic. Ceramic brake pads are designed to withstand higher temperatures and provide greater stopping power, but they come with a hefty price tag.
It's important to note that brake pads are only one part of the braking system. You'll also need to factor in the cost of labour when having your brakes serviced. On average, having your brakes serviced can cost anywhere from $100-$500 depending on the type of vehicle and the extent of the work being done.
