A rectangle is drawn first and coloured a mid brown. Wood textures can be generated by applying transparent fractal fills onto the brown rectangle. Here I have used one of my old fills. A bitmap copy is made. The bird, cloud waves and olive branch are all drawn freehand in Xara Designer Pro. They are then filled with the bitmap copy of the wood texture. With the bevel tool the bird, cloud and waves are made to stand proud. The same technique was used to create the various parts of the outer frame. From scratch the whole exercise took just under 30 minutes. It would take me a little longer in Adobe Photoshop although Photoshop is more powerful for photoediting. Xara is often my first choice to create an image from scratch.

Some of my friends have asked about how I draw in Xara. I have some examples in one of my albums devoted to Xara but this exploded drawing shows how things are created from layered shapes with transparent fills. The experience of drawing this way is similar to oil painting but a darned sight quicker between layers. Sometimes I create an object in Xara and drop it into a real photograph, applying blur and grain and lighting effects to match the photo. I find Photoshop best for applying finishing touches to such fakes,
A fuller work flow is described in the last post. This is an example of how within a few seconds different fills can be applied to the drawn shapes.

Here's another one of my new vector sugar skull drawings, created on the iPad using the iDraw app. iDraw has gotten me curious about vectors so I've started taking an online class to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator. It looks like an awesome program and I can't to start making art with it! One thing I like about vectors is that you can easily change the colors of the images. I did 2 versions of these skulls in different colors, so tomorrow I'll post the other one.
