This is a view of the Vectorial Elevation light sculpture taken on the south side of False Creek. You can control the lights online here and view them live (best at night Vancouver time)! The installation is one of the many cultural events in Vancouver during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Check out my blog for an update on the games.

A study done in Illustrator based on a self-portrait. The original photo looks nothing like this, however, which was kind of the point. I wanted to make something much better.
Also I was practicing what I mentally think of as a sort of vector sfumato. True sfumato as DaVinci used it would mean blending without lines, and clearly the lines are evident in my vector work. But sfumato also implies a smoky or soft look.
Much of vector art has a characteristic crispness that can be very lovely in it's precision and simplicity or seductive in it's detail and grace. But I like playing with this technique of laying pool after pool of color on each other in graduated colors to build up details and give edges the illusion of dimension. Also, when used in portrait illustration, this technique simulates the skin's translucent quality rather than looking flat and one-dimensional.
You can see my early work with this technique in this vector portrait:

Above all, I think the vector shapes must be graceful in their curves and pleasant in the details. Points should be well-designed and curves fine-tuned if needed. At least, that's my feeling. Otherwise, just have Illustrator do it automatically and be done. But if there's a brain behind it, it should look like there's a brain behind it. After all, was it created with intent or not?
