Reflections of the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, Firenze, Italy

Ponte Vecchio - Florence, Italy.

An eternal symbol of Florence - Built near a Roman crossing, the Ponte Vecchio was until 1218 the only bridge that crossed the Arno in Florence. The bridge, as we see it today, was built in 1345 after a violent flood had destroyed the previous one. During the Second World War the German troops destroyed all the bridges of Florence, except this one. However, they blocked access to the bridge by destroying the two medieval buildings on its sides. On 4 November 1966 the Ponte Vecchio miraculously endured the huge wave of water of the Arno in flood, which broke its banks causing the flood of Florence. Commissioned by the Medici, it allowed them to move from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti without having to safely cross the streets of Florence. At the time of the construction of the Corridor, the butchers' shops were gathered on the Ponte Vecchio, which probably with their activity disturbed the passage of the Medici, who in 1593 made them move, replacing them with the more "decorous" goldsmith shops.

How could I go to Florence without photographing this impressive building. Even more so because it is probably the most famous photo motif in this city.

In fact, the Ponte Vecchio was my first motif this morning. As you can see, we're still a long way from sunrise here.

This unusual structure was completed in 1345, making it the oldest bridge in the city. It is always overwhelming for me when I see when such structures were built.

Incidentally, that happened here at a time when things were not going so well in Europe. It was a century of crisis, poverty and disease (including the plague). Much of this was triggered by what now serves as an explanation for pretty much everything, climate change (surprise, it's happened before).

However, it got significantly colder back then, which resulted in failed harvests and extreme weather. Incidentally, before that, during one of Europe's heydays, it was significantly warmer than today.

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is an open-air museum. Here, I will post some photos of the city taken during the New Year festive season. There was no snow, but that didn't stop the city from dressing up in festive clothes.

Florence is home to some of the best art museums in the world, the city has always seemed to be a patron of the arts and a ravenous implementor of new sciences all except for a brief period that ended in a bonfire. The Ponte Vecchio (The Old Bridge) has been around long enough to earns its moniker, the current bridge is its third iteration (1345) as the Arno used to be prone to flooding, before this there was a Roman bridge not far from its footings dating to 125BC. Called the “Bridge of Gold” for the number of goldsmiths that ply their trade on the bridge this all due to the Medici family, in Medieval times this was the home of cities butchers with easy access to the river for dumping the Medici couldn’t abide the stench as they trod over the masses below so had the butcher’s sent packing.

The light is divine, on Porto-Vecchio

The clouds and the spleen, tattooed on my skin...

I don't go, I swim, in the murmur of the waves

And I left your name, and my heart on the beach, aah hah ah

A sigh is drawn on the Porto-Vecchio

Immortal, murderer, you're out of the sea...

I don't cry, I swim, in the murmur of the waves, aah hah ah

I forgot your name, and your body on the beach, aah hah ah, aah hah ah

You let go of my hand, on the Porto-Vecchio.

I smile at the venom, which burned my back

I'm not crying, I'm swimming, in the sea of flames, aah hah ah

To forget your body, to get over you, aah hah ah

I'll be back tomorrow, on the Porto-Vecchio...

To forget your hand, and the taste of your skin, aah hah ah

You let go of my hand, on the Porto-Vecchio.

I smile at the venom, which burned my back

I'm not crying, I'm swimming, in the sea of flames, aah hah ah

To forget your body, to get over you, aah hah ah...
