I have photographed this waterfall on a variety of occasions - it is generally a challenging shoot owing to the amount of spray when there is a good amount of water coming over.

Thanks to Steve Pellatt for his excellent company!

My 8 yr old granddaughter and I had a hoot doing this. ALOT harder then I thought it would be. Guess Vaseline didn't stick as well as I hoped but still Ok.

One more with Vaseline smeared on the lens filter

It took me a while to decide to post this photo. The theme motion blur for Macro Mondays took me way out of my comfort zone with my camera. Moving away from the automatic switch is very new to me and it proved to be very challenging trying to create the blur effect. I must have taken hundreds of photos, I was quite excited when I got the results of this spinning Vaseline tin which fell off the table numerous times in my attempts. I would have cropped the lights out of the back but then I would have lost the edge of the tin. I will try this again when I have more time and patience :-)

I hope help comes soon.

Any help is welcome. egg split spatula, plunger, vaseline or bowling ball, it doesn't matter. As long as I get rid of that poop chair

Soft focus is a photography technique in which the image is deliberately slightly blurred. One way to achieve this is to apply some Vaseline to the lens. It is not recommended to apply the Vaseline directly to the camera lens. It is better to do this on a UV filter or a neutral protective lens, which is screwed in front of the camera lens. This keeps the camera lens itself clean.

Accidenti!

A simple trick to soft focus photography, Vaseline. Years ago when Catherine and I were shooting film a little trick we learned, and had fun with was to add {smear} some vaseline on a spare UV or clear filter. DO NOT do this on your lens!! You smear the petroleum jelly around the outer edges of the glass and try to leave the center of the filter clean and without the vaseline on it. A little alcohol on a paper towel can be used to clean the center should you get some of the jelly where you don't want it. Two other tricks to try that will give you a soft focus look is hair spray sprayed around the out perimeter of the filter, and you also can try shooting through a nylon stocking (with your wife's leg out of it) :) I haven't done this in years and I just thought about it again, found myself an unused filter, smeared the vaseline on it, and had some fun shooting the above images. Now you can buy soft focus filters, or for a much higher cost a LensBaby, and both will yield similar, but not quite the same results. But save yourself some money, smear 15 cents worth of vaseline on that filter and have some fun with it!

This silk flower dreams of being a real flower some day... :0)

The focus is sharp on the flower's centre, while the edges and background are softly blurred, creating a shallow depth of field that makes the dahlia pop. I went back to the old school and used Vaseline around the perimeter of the UV filter

Happy April 15th to all of my American friends. Hope you bought your Vaseline and don’t worry: your tax return is in competent, capable hands. =)

Just a break between my Pendulum Aerial Arts series. I had to celebrate this once a year American tradition. I will be resuming my PAA series tomorrow.

Shooting with the Crown Graphic is just fun. And most of that fun comes from the lens. It's an early 1900s Steinheil just warps the edges of reality just enough to make me smile.

There's no crazy drop off or vaseline-like bokeh swirling its vortices all over the background. But it's more than just a pleasant softness to the focus. It's a vintage look that doesn't allow me to rely on the look as a crutch.

Essentially, I have to take a good photo in order for it to look like a good photo. That should go without saying, but it really doesn't.

I typically shoot this lens at 1/200sec to avoid motion blur when hand-holding it. It's a 135mm lens, so that's a pretty simple task. I also like to shoot it with a wide open aperture (f/4.5). This allows for the maximum effect.

Sometimes in bright light with higher speed film, this forces me to stop down the aperture to something like f/18, but that still doesn't kill the look completely.

One thing this lens is not amazing at is landscapes. And while this photo looks sort of landscapy, it's really not. I mean, I guess it sort of defaults to that category, but it's not a wide open and sprawling photo. It's a tight hold on the tree and the rock formation beyond it. Hell, it's essentially a portrait of Umatilla Rock with the tree photobombing it.
