another of the ugly black rocks I found a long time ago, in a place far away! this is the most curious of the lot, with lots of color............

The old Standard Varnish Works on Richmond Terrace near the Bayonne Bridge in Elm Park, Staten Island, NY. Which had open vats of liquid chemicals and solvents stored in its yard during the nineteenth century touching off an explosion and five alarm fire. The raging inferno could be seen out over Newark Bay in the evening and fire departments from New jersey were called in to extinguish the massive blaze which had spread on to the water and threatened shipping docked nearby.

Standeat Varnish continued in operation thereafter and became Standard T Chemical operating until 1982 when it closed down and the property sold. It has since become a NYC Landmark.

Spotless MRL 4312 leads a business strain west through Arlee, Montana on the beautiful fall evening of October 12, 2013.

The O-TOPMEM's departure this morning was perfectly timed over my lunch break, so I was able to go get it just east of Topeka at the Goodell Rd. overpass near Tecumseh. 25th Anniversary GEVO #6022 was looking great on the point of this pocket streamliner.

The consist was as follows:

Snoqualmie Pass

Stampede Pass

Fred Harvey

William B. Strong

WC seemed to assign SDL's to the passenger moves quite often in comparison to other units. 585 leads a westbound near Engadine on May 25, 1992.

A pair of CP's finest hustles an equally exquisite train west through the Thompson Canyon on the approach to Spences Bridge.

Thanks to the combination of free time, and an exceptionally timely heads up, I was able to spring off of the couch this afternoon to catch this 12-car Union Pacific passenger special in Topeka! It was headed towards Herington behind the newly-rebuilt UP 5834.

This was the PCBPS 15, a train destined for... points west?

On a pleasant Sunday afternoon, I had free time in my day to run up to the St. Joe Sub and photograph this southbound BNSF business train, led by the 7183. This lengthy train was the O-SPOTOP (Office, Spokane-Topeka), and was simply a deadhead move back to the Shops, so it wasn't running with any sort of authority.

Here, it's pulling past the south end of the French siding, which is just south of St. Joseph, MO.

Union Pacific's Office Car Special catches the last rays of sunshine in the canyon east of Cliffe.

After making a quick trip across the states of Illinois and Missouri, the Norfolk Southern OCS spun itself around within Ustick Tower's general footprint, using the ASB Bridge as it's south tail track. This was running as NS Train 953.

This train had begun in Detroit, and started the day in Decatur, IL, with an 0600 call time for the crew. This was just about the last act for the the crew on this day before calling it quits on what seemed to be a successful day.

Regarding this location, I was here with permission and accompaniment from RR personnel. I wouldn't try this on my own.

Hemlock (the coniferous tree, not the poisonous herb) is the preferred host tree of hemlock varnish shelf, or Ganoderma tsugae. Eastern hemlocks grow in abundance in the mixed forest behind my cottage. They normally grow to 100 feet or more in height. When they fall they are slow to decompose, becoming nurse trees for many other organisms. This hemlock varnish shelf fungus is about two feet wide.

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

This afternoon, I had juuuuuust enough time in my schedule to sneak up to North Topeka to get this one shot of a westbound 10-car Union Pacific business train that was headed my way.

This was the PCBHN 03, and like so many business trains, this one was led by the UP 4404. This was running from Council Bluffs, IA to Herington, KS.

Video of this train can be found here: youtu.be/Uz5ek7miZlM?si=Fs8lC9-AMaeFkQnz

Someone put in tons of labour and varnish to get her ready fro the season.

After running the 82nd edition of the Santa Train, CSX P001, the OCS consist, is seen making the deadhead back to Waycross, GA. Normally, they would deadhead for the event via the south end of the Clinchfield. Thanks to Hurricane Helene & the damage it did to the line south of Erwin, TN, the consist had to deadhead both ways via Atlanta & Cincinatti. Here, we see the return trip at NE Englewood as it closes in on Etowah, TN. 11-24-24

On Mother's Day weekend in 1990, Portland's Pacific Northwest Chapter of the NRHS ran an overnight excursion to Redding, California. The train featured a brand new Cotton Belt GP60 on the point. Here, the train has just highballed Grass Lake, during Sunday's return to Portland.

UP 1943 after a layover in West Chicago flys west in the setting sun at Rochelle.

Why is it called a Golden Rain Tree? Because when its thousands of tiny yellow and orange flowers fall to the ground, they cover the grass below, filling valleys in tropical leaves and collecting in piles against houses and walls.

Look carefully, already you can see the next stage of this amazing tree... where the blossoms have fallen, small deep red pods are beginning to form. Within weeks they will swell into Chinese-lantern-shaped pods containing large seeds that are green at first, and a month or so later will turn to a striking shiny black.

In the Orient years ago, these seeds were used to make the shiny hard varnish they used to finish furniture and small objects.

For years I loved the Golden Rain on the ground, walking in it the way I used to walk in Fall leaves when I lived in the Northeast. And each year, I also loved the Varnish Tree pods, never realizing they were both stages of the very same tree!

11 Celebration II by Nancy Benoy

The “Celebration II” sculpture was created using discarded wood, exterior paint and varnish. “Celebration II” is intended to compliment/contrast an environment in which it is placed, bright bold solid colours against the backdrop of a park or cityscape. Onlookers can view in the round, evoking their own ideas of celebration.

Union Pacific DDA40X 6936 had a southbound inspection train headed for Proviso back in 2002.

The CNW signal bridge is long gone, and UP rarely used the Centennial on business trains and in 2022 UP donated the big thing to non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) which set up shop in the former NRE/Rock Island Silvis Shop.

NS 5115 brings Northern Pacific dome 'Stampede Pass' across the South Branch Chicago River lift bridge, heading for the Amtrak coach yard. This move took me by surprise- does anyone know where the car was being moved from?

Desert varnish forms only on physically stable rock surfaces that are no longer subject to frequent precipitation, fracturing or wind abrasion. The varnish is primarily composed of particles of clay along with iron and manganese oxides. There is also a host of trace elements and almost always some organic matter. The color of the varnish varies from shades of brown to black. (Wikipedia)

Two nearly new CN ET44ACs hustle train P617 along the north side of Mink Lake near Carvel, Alberta on CN's Edson Sub.

On the morning on August 3, I got out to photograph the UP 4222 leading the PHNCB through my neck of the woods, and was happy to have gotten it at three locations; Topeka, Lawrence, and Bonner Springs.

Fortunately, at this time of the year, morning shots from this location (mp 67 in Topeka) are well lit, as the sun is in the north. It's nice getting the Kansas Capitol Building into these shots..

I just couldn't get this 100% how I wanted it; i.e. the brush was supposed to be in focus and not the blob... Anyway, limited time to perfect this one and shot for the theme Macro Monday: Vibrant Minimalism.

Horseshoe Canyon to the Great Gallery; Canyonlands National Park, Utah; November 2017

The desert varnish in this stretch of canyon impressed me. I did end up cropping out the very bottom of my original shot to remove some burro droppings from the frame—a reminder that what I show isn't always the unvarnished truth.

A westbound freight train passes an Amtrak special at the Mott-Azalea crossover near Mt. Shasta, California. The Amtrak train had taken a trainload of passengers from Sacramento to the Railroad Days in Dunsmuir. After turning on the wye at Black Butte, it was returning to Dunsmuir to load passengers for the trip back to Sacramento.
