Just a bunch of sheep grazing in the far distance under the winter sunshine and ominous sky. The bare trees dominate the riverbank and reflect onto the river stream. Not a duck in sight though! Just caught the light before it started to drop too low.
Floating clouds colored by a setting sun and separated by contrails (airplane vapor trails) make for splendor in the sky.
With the recent release of Top Gun: Maverick I wanted to go back and review some of the images I took while assigned to USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) in the late-2000s. One of the highlights of our deployments was the returning home air show that the air wing would perform for the crew out in the middle of the ocean.
I've seen the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds perform many times, and while their aircraft may look really nice with the performance team paint jobs, seeing your coworkers and friends pull out all the stops to put their aircraft through their paces and demonstrate what they and their craft are capable of is pretty impressive.
Sacred land of the Navaho to be protected and preserved by this generation for the future of the Navaho people
Photographing one morning in Glacier National Park, most of us were focused on the sun's interplay with the mountains and the lake behind us. Looking up, I saw this 'con' trail from an airliner high up and was able to quickly remove my camera from my tripod in time to quickly frame a single image just immediately before the plane disappeared behind the mountain above. I wonder if their view from above was half as majestic as was ours below.
E/A-6B Prowlers make a low pass, through the clouds during an at sea flight show off the USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), America's last conventionally powered aircraft carrier, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Maryport was a new town founded by local landowner Humphrey Senhouse in 1748/9 around the development of the harbor at the mouth of the River Ellen, In order to break into the lucrative coal export trade to Ireland extensive development took place in the second half of the 19th century with the arrival of the railway, the Elizabeth Dock opening in 1857, on land reclaimed from the sea. In 1867, 3000 vessels a year were using the port, with nearly half a million tons of coal exported in that year. These remained the largest docks on the West Cumbrian coastline until 1927, now only a small fishing fleet and a Marina remains,
Contrails (short for condensation trails) or vapor trails are line-shaped clouds produced by aircraft engine exhaust or changes in air pressure, typically at aircraft cruising altitudes several miles above the Earth's surface. Contrails are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals. The combination of water vapor in aircraft engine exhaust and the low ambient temperatures that exist at high altitudes allows the formation of the trails. Impurities in the engine exhaust from the fuel, including sulfur compounds (0.05% by weight in jet fuel) provide some of the particles that can serve as sites for water droplet growth in the exhaust and, if water droplets form, they might freeze to form ice particles that compose a contrail. Their formation can also be triggered by changes in air pressure in wingtip vortices or in the air over the entire wing surface. Contrails, and other clouds directly resulting from human activity, are collectively named homogenitus.
Depending on the temperature and humidity at the altitude the contrails form, they may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes, or may persist for hours and spread to be several miles wide, eventually resembling natural cirrus or altocumulus clouds. Persistent contrails are of particular interest to scientists because they increase the cloudiness of the atmosphere. The resulting cloud forms are formally described as homomutatus, and may resemble cirrus, cirrocumulus, or cirrostratus, and are sometimes called cirrus aviaticus. Some persistent spreading contrails contribute to climate change. R_825
Contrails / Traînée de condensation / Vapor trails are effectively artificial clouds produced by aircraft at high altitudes. Love them or hate them, they are part of modern life. Here (with flic.kr/p/2nNDN3g) are two photographs of contrails.
This photograph shows several contrails above Saint Michel L'Observatoire, France.
Daring maneuvers...New Zealand War Birds Air Show
Thanks to all who take the time to visit and comment on my photo stream....it's greatly appreciated. Also for all of the invitations to join or post my photos into groups!
No Photoshop or manipulation used here to produce this photo, just luck!
The Blue Angels do a 4-ship landing configuration "high drag" pass in their show, with landing gear and arrester hook deployed. Once they fly past Show Center they pull vertical while still in diamond formation to show the incredible power of their General Electric F404 engines. While following this maneuver with the camera I caught the sun reflecting through their vapor trails, producing the rainbow effect.
"I'd rather be lucky than good any day of the week," as they say.

During my walk along the Via Regia (old Roman Trade Route) in our area (Maintal-Wachenbuchen, Frankfurt area, Germany) I noticed all the jet trails in the sky. A few weeks ago during lockdown this looked very different. By the way: Frankfurt International Airport is only 27 kilometers away.
The Blue Angels is the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron, flown by five Navy pilots and one Marine Corps pilot (the USMC is a Department of the Navy).
They were formed in 1946 and are the world's second oldest formal aerobatic team (the French beat us to being the first back in 1931). Although they have flown many different front line fighter aircraft in their time, their current ride is the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet with its two powerful General Electric F404 engines.
The Blue Angels perform at least 60 airshows every year in the US and Canada. Since 1946, they've flown for more than 500 million people. They also regularly perform charity work in schools and hospitals.
Their friendly competitors are the world's third oldest aerobatic team, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, formed in 1953, who fly the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.

This virgin airoplane went over today on its way to coolangatta airport, left a beautiful vapor trail behind
Just got back from the walk and saw this plane make a u turn, so thought it was a fun shot. I was thinking the instructor told the pilot to go to the sun and make a U turn for your pilot license.
