Van Dyke - Large Format 6x8 (Full Plate) Negative - UV Light Exposure - Gold Toned - Arches Aquarelle
Van Dyke over pigment ink print. I converted the image in Photoshop from RGB to CMYK. The color part of the print was made on my Epson printer using the CMY channels only. The digital negative for the van Dyke was made using only the K (black) channel. Printed the color part first, then coated it with Van Dyke Brown solution, exposed the digital neg normally and developed as usual.
It's been a few years since I've played with VDB; still re-working out the contrasts.

This VanDyke Brown print was made from a digital negative, and used the classic VanDyke Brown chemicals. The image is 5x7 inches (approx B6 size) made on 8x10 (approx A4) Bergger COT 320 paper. The digital negative was made using a hand adjusted curve based on Peter Mrhrar and his free Easy Digital Negative (EDN) process. Born in the Holga on 2-1/4" Tri-X film, scanned and inverted (posted to Flickr 2013), adjusted and printed as a digital negative (transparency) for VanDyke Brown process. The digital negative was then contact printed as a Lumen with a 7 hour exposure in the bright June sun. The lumen print was then scanned prior to fixing and the image was finally inverted in Adobe Photoshop. I was both surprised and pleased with the resulting image.

This print was made using techniques patented in 1895. I enjoy the challenges of using the same chemistry and techniques patented over 125 years ago. This labor-intensive practice transforms a casual, ephemeral, disposable digital image into a unique, hand-crafted photographic print.

Van Dyke Brown is an alternative photographic process, using 3 chemicals products, depending on paper and toning, images can run the range of black, sepia, and beautiful rich browns.
Here all stock solutions are home made.
A suitable paper is coated with a solution containing ferric ammonium citrate, silver nitrate and tartaric acid, using a large brush.
After coating, the sensitized paper is exposed by contact printing to a negative under an UVA light source.
Then the paper is developed into fraiche water, fixed, washed and dried.
