Witnessing a night of aurora borealis show for hours on end with ever changing plumes and shapes, hues and intensities of those raging lights is an experience nobody forgets, especially not if it was the first real aurora. I mean I had seen instances before but never so bright and clear, so pronounced and prolonged.

More fun from my currently being overhauled archives :) : Reine on the Lofoten islands under a very unique and ominous sky. Those turbulent clouds reminded me of the Ride of the Valkyries inspired by Norse Mythology.

But if one wants to go for other stuff than Norse mythology, I also see a whale and dolphins in that sky :)

All of my life have I been longing for seeing the Northern Lights and no matter how often we went to the North, we never saw a real good show and then this afternoon, after Arctic night came past 2pm, we went to the Northern tip of our island at Russelv, where there are no more houses, nothing else but Norwegian Sea, mountains and shoreline and whilst we were unpacking gear, the big gig in the sky started and lasted for TWO HOURS! I am half-frozen now but have got about 200 Aurora shots in my camera!! *Does the Snoopy Dance" :D

And the best of all, the Aurora appeared as a Birthday present! :D

Valhalla:

In Norse mythology, Valhalla from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain", is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those who die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by Valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr.

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Half of those who die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries to be with Odin, while the other half gets chosen by the goddess Freyja for the field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead warriors join the masses of those killed in combat (known as the Einherjar) and various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök. Before the hall stands the golden tree Glasir, and the hall's ceiling is thatched with golden shields. Various creatures live around Valhalla, such as the stag Eikþyrnir and the goat Heiðrún, described as standing atop Valhalla and consuming the foliage of the tree Læraðr.

Valhalla is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, in the Prose Edda (written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson), in Heimskringla (also written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson), and in stanzas of an anonymous 10th century poem commemorating the death of Eric Bloodaxe known as Eiríksmál as compiled in Fagrskinna. Valhalla inspired innumerable works of art, publication titles, and elements of popular culture, and is synonymous with a martial (or otherwise) hall of the chosen dead. The name is rendered in modern Scandinavian languages as Valhöll in Icelandic, while the Swedish and Norwegian form is Valhall, in Faroese it's Valhøll, and in Danish it's Valhal.

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (/vælˈkɪəri, -ˈkaɪri, vɑːl-, ˈvælkəri/;[1] from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries take their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters".

When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead.

Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens and sometimes connected to swans or horses.

VIKINGS SONG - The Path to Valhalla by Zergananda - Click Here

Lyrics:

The seer is speaking with his gods

He will see what the future will become

In his vision all in the way will fall

Before the mighty warriors

The ritual of blood is a gift

To the spirits of the sea

They will help us reach

The place of our glory

Through the sea

Through fire

Through honorable death in fighting

We will come to the sacred land

Nothing stops us

Nothing breaks us

Our father awaits us

In the golden halls of Valhalla

Our women are shield maidens

With the power of Freya

They are fighting like the bravest

Side by side with our men

We can cross the ocean

Our ships are strong

Thor has blessed us with the thunder

Of the distant storm

Our enemies are close

They are praying to their god

I can see

The fear in their eyes

He can’t help them in this battle

Because Odin,

Our father,

Stays on our side

Through the sea

Through fire

Through honorable death in fighting

We will come to the sacred land

Nothing stops us

Nothing breaks us

Our father awaits us

In the golden halls of Valhalla

I smell blood around

Valkyries are flying in the sky

The axes are pulling my hands to the ground

But I will continue to fight!

My fate belongs to the gods

Before the day I die

I must deserve the right

To join my fellow brothers

Through the sea

Through fire

Through honorable death in fighting

We will come to the sacred land

Nothing stops us

Nothing breaks us

Our father awaits us

In the golden halls of Valhalla!

(Richard Wagner -Ride of The Valkyries-)

Behind Sigrid blood hammer lies the mashy coast of the East Saxons where in the the year of 894 in the common era a battle between the Saxons and the Danish Vikings took place. Benfleet was the Viking settlement but the Vikings were defeated by the army of King Alfred under the command of his son Edward the elder and his son-in-law, Earl Aethelred of Murcia. A church was built by the Saxons as Thanksgiving to the victory over the Vikings, St'Mary's Church occupies this site. On a cold winters night when the wind is blowing hard the sound of the Valkyries can be heard sweeping down the ice cold waters searching for the wretched souls of the Vikings who were lost and never went to Valhalla.

Cry of the Valkyries

Vallaha as Valkyries scream from

the depths of hell.

Charging out

into the vacuum

of an unoccupied mind

deafening all who listen

to their monstrous cry

from the bleak wilderness

called Vallaha.

Scream out to Odin

the scourger, charmer, enchanter.

Bewitched sinner sirens,

resonant, ensouling the strings

of unattended souls.

Lyrics whispered into

the trance of an ephemeral ballet

yet, appearing

epic in length and nature.

Just been revisiting some of my old photos of the Alps. This is the huge north face of the Grandes Jorasses on the Mont Blanc massif (above Chamonix), rising to 4208m. It's one the great north walls of the Alps for climbers, first ascended in 1868. The face itself rises about 1200m above the glacier floor and still looks terrifying! I'm always in awe at these huge mountain ranges and the climbers who go up them. For several years I did audio-visual shows of The Alps to camera clubs and local groups. I chose Wagner's' Ride of the Valkyries for the sequence around Mont Blanc.

I've visited all four impressive castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. This one is my personal favorite. Maybe because it's tiny, compared to others. It has only ten rooms. Therefore it's not overwhelming. This palace with its Baroque facade was influenced by French architecture, and the interior is decorated with Rococo motifs from the time of Louis XV. It's surrounded by the most beautiful park, which unfortunately I did not have time to explore thoroughly.

Ludwig II of Bavaria was obsessed with the work of Wagner, that's why I included a link to one of the best known pieces of Richard Wagner music - The Ride of the Valkyries.

When Ravna was raped and brutally murdered by her fellow Viking chieftains for become to successful and popular with Odin. They removed her eyes so as Odin would not know who had killed his favourite chieftain

On fearing his revenge they believed in burying her body deep within a glacier high in the wilderness.

When Frigg finally found her favorite warrior she knew she could not bring her back to full life, and her tomb would now be her home forevermore. Niether could she be one of the Valkyrie that carried dead Vikings to Valhalla.

But the Goddess bestowed a gift on her daughter and that was of she would be the tool of distruction on any male who brutalised women and send them into the arms of Hel the goddess of the underworld!

With the end of the Viking era Ravna returned to sleep in her icy tomb. That was until she was woken again by the greed and avarice of modern men. Again once more walked the earth to seek out any who were the cause of womens pain, and they would feel the sword of ice through their hearts!
