Title from some random YouTube video from Kurzgesagt about universal quantum collapse. Interesting but terrifying.

In the window of the vacuum cleaner shop

A colleague of mine, philosophy professor, was pestered by his students that he ought to look into himself when searching for answers. His reply was, that he had done so. "There is nothing in it", he said. It is a frightening answer. I would modify it by saying that everything that is in me I have put there myself - either actively by doing so, or passively, by allowing it to be put there. And that is frightening as well. To be fully responsible without knowing the answers, perhaps not even to be aware of the right kind of questions. This is a dilemma we should not run away from. Pseudo-certainties will not only not help, they are dangerous as well. But we can talk about the human dilemma. Perhaps agree on ways forward. "Nobody is perfect" is a helpful assumption. Knowing this is what makes us human. Leica M Mono, plus Leitz Elmar 4/135 at F8 (focus achieved in Live View).

The biggest one is a little hand-held battery-powered vacuum cleaner💕🐞

Double glazed windows are slightly concave due to the vacuum in between the two panes of glass which results in significant distortion. This is the sun shining on our house reflected in the window opposite with a tracery of malus floribunda branches in the foreground. It's a different kind of image for me but it made an interesting change.

Stadsgraanzuiger No19 Getreideheber Infos*

Grain lifter 19 Infos*

The principle is simple yet unimaginable, and works like a vacuum cleaner.

The World's only surviving steam grain lifter.

The MAS (MUSEUM AM STROM) and the Maritime Museum Rotterdam have developed a kind of plan for shared custody for this particular ship.

The cereal lifter is under joint management and spends half of its time in Antwerp and the other half in Rotterdam.

But, after a 92-year career, even such a great machine as the grain lifter is starting to show some weaknesses.

Both the pontoon, the tower and the electronics need to be restored to keep the whole thing permanent and functional for the future.

For this reason, the grain lifter is expected to stay in Rotterdam for two years before coming back to Antwerp.

A long nozzle brush, one of the attachments for a small hand-held vacuum cleaner.

Unlike the other dogs we've had, Kobuk doesn't mind having me vacuum around him. He did decide to hang out with his "cube," which is a kind of puzzle for dogs. (It holds small treats, and he has to rotate or shake it to get them out.)

Explored # 479 on July 3, 2020. Kobuk was very pleased to hear the news - thank you, everyone!

PHILIPS radioplayer

This antique, polished wood veneer, vacuum tube radio still plays.

I found it in a second-hand store, on the bottom shelf, in Adelaide, more than a decade ago.

It had a wax-paper capacitor that was burnt out. I am not sure, now, how I discovered that. I was smarter, back then. I bought a modern capacitor of the same value, removed the tar plug at the end of the old capacitor, concealed the new capacitor inside and put the end of the old capacitor back on. It looks original, and works, perfectly.

Recently, I put this old radio alongside a modern plastic case Sony ICF-SW35 and found the tuning to be fairly accurate.

Household appliances and automobiles of this generation seemed to be built to last and easily repaired, when required, without too much effort or cost, as compared to 21st century products that waste disposal sites and car wrecking yards are full of. Everything is made to a "price point", designed and manufactured to be replaced every few years to keep the consumers spending and buying more mass-produced, Made-in-China, brand name bullshit.

We went upstairs to escape the vacuum and the crazy lady who runs it all the time. The look on the cat's face is one of great confusion and worry, "Why does this keep happening? When can we leave?"

"Hope our vacuum is hungry," stated Phillip.

"Oh he is. He hasn't been fed in weeks! Well, since he ate mom's ring and refused to reveal its whereabouts!"

"Are you sure this is how mom wanted the Christmas mess cleaned up, because once he eats it, he won't want to give it back for next year."

"I already thought about that. I filled him up on old salami and moldy leftovers. Once we are done cleaning, we will just open him up and take out what we need before he has time to digest it or throw it up...whichever comes first!"

"Marble, you are the smartest!"
