I was visiting a friend in Vacaville yesterday and decided to pay the Burrowing Owls a visit. I took this shot from my car where this little owls was right next to the curb...it gave me 'the look' meaning don't you dare come any closer!

This is the Lucky supermarket at 777 E Monte Vista Ave, Vacaville, California. Is the address lucky enough for you? This store is about 40 minutes north of me and it was a former Albertsons. Actually, I think everyone is lucky that Albertsons is gone. In the last few years that Albertsons was still around, the prices got really high and customer service went downhill. Albertsons then did a really strange thing. They installed television screens at the checkout stands where they blasted customers with loud and obnoxious tv commercials. It was pure torture. Albertsons, LLC sort of went crazy from greed in the past few years.

When Save Mart took over, they got rid of the obnoxious in-your-face commercials. Thank goodness!!!

On a side note, Albertsons, LLC closed 4 Albertsons stores in my area around 2006. They even closed a store in downtown. They claimed that the location was not a profitable location for a supermarket. After Albertsons closed down, a Trader Joe's opened up, and it seems like it is the most busy market in the entire city. The parking lot is so packed that they had to implement valet parking. It wasn't the location that was bad. People just did not like going to Albertsons.

However, I still find Albertsons decor very interesting. Some of their stores featured interesting items such as a giant pretzel and a floor with a fake street drawn on it.

See the bottom of the page for photos. I don't know who owns the online journal.

Still our first week of winter and it was a beautiful sunny, windless day at the Lagoon in Vacaville...a puddle away from being empty, it's now full of water after finally getting the heavy rain that we needed.

I took my youngest grandson to the RC airfield there to try out his new plane while I walked around to see what birds had arrived. There were many species around but the people may have outnumbered them. I enjoyed watching this 'Say's Phoebe' flitting around from bush to plant catching bugs and was happy with this to call it a day.

Did you know that I also have a portfolio of abstract/impressionistic photos taken with intentional camera movement? One of my favorite photographers ever, William Neill, turned me on to this technique with his incredible portfolio "Impressions of light" I think Bill was the first to popularize it, and now its pretty common to see for today's nature photogs. I have to wonder how Bill feels about seeing this stuff everywhere.

Anyway, I made this image in a grove of blue oak trees as the sun set and cast long shadows in between bands of brightly lit summer grass. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

I once knew someone whose parents owned this establishment, and it was a nice, well-kept place but it looks like the riff raff has taken over and the once bright nice neon signage is dark now...

This shot is dedicated to my dear friend Alan (lightbox 2008) who is feeling under the weather and since returning to England from his visit has gotten a bad cold. Hope the memories of this visit and this moment put a smile on your face. Feel better soon dear friend!

We would both like to thank Doris (d.lily) for taking us to this amazing place in Vacaville where there were many burrowing owls just flying around and landing on different perches and just sitting by the side of the road.Doris I cant wait till next year for the babies!

It was an amazing day spent with Doris, Marty and Alan! We had a blast! Always a pleasure shooting and hanging out with all of you!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

And that would be taking photos while driving. I got into a bad habit of doing that while touring in Amish Country. Well, it was a digital camera I was using this time and easier to do than film cameras that I normally use. This shot was in between Fairfield and Vacaville on Highway 80 in the Lagoon Valley area during much needed rain.

Amtrak Capital Corridor train 520 hustles east past Canon this morning with 2 gennys leading 4 cars and 2 F59's. Sorry for the nose candy, he got me by surprise and with the the edge of the marine layer being so close the wind was really whipping. I'm just satisfied that I got the damn thing focused!
