I went to a talk earlier this week about de-extinction of species that became extinct mainly due to humans. It makes you wonder what happens to places, structures and habitats that are created for humans, but are also made extinct because of humans.

This is a residential area in Shanghai, China that was boarded up in preparation for the 2010 World Expo. Even though this neighborhood is located in the Nanjing West Rd area in HuangPu District: nowhere close to the World Expo site, Shanghai decided that it would be best to hide the old parts of the city and show visitors the new, up and coming parts of town. The small, street-side snack shops have moved to a newly constructed pedestrian area about 100m away. It's clean, well-lit and modern. You can still get pan-fried dumplings, hand-pulled noodles and tasty desserts from the old days.
