Macro of a Stanley Knife / Craft Knife, photographed for Macro Monday’s theme “safety”. The safety element of my picture being the little widget at the top that retracts the blade. I sometime’s think that macro images reveal just a touch too much detail so I’ve tried to add a bit of interest to the image - post processed to the max you could say.

A utility knife such as this one can be useful for a number of tasks, including, in this case, a photo for today's Macro Mondays "Tool" theme. And this one was particularly handy for me, because my wife and I are having drywall installed in our basement, and I photographed this tool exactly as I found it as left by the contractor when he went home at day's end. The white dust and that big chunk, I think, is drywall material.

HMM

An indispensable little hand tool that fits well in the hand. I have had the knife for a few years now ....

A utility knife is any type of knife used for general manual work purposes. Such knives were originally fixed-blade knives with durable cutting edges suitable for rough work such as cutting cordage, cutting/scraping hides, butchering animals, cleaning fish scales, reshaping timber, and other tasks. Craft knives are small utility knives used as precision-oriented tools for finer, more delicate tasks such as carving and papercutting.

Today, the term "utility knife" also includes small folding-, retractable- and/or replaceable-razor blade knives suited for use in the general workplace or in the construction industry. The latter type is sometimes generically called a Stanley knife, after a prominent brand. [Source: Wikipedia]

Since it's windy and raining Sheena and I spent some time in the garage this morning and built a homemade light box.. It was super easy and only cost me $6 to make! I got the idea HERE.

The only thing I had to use for light diffusing was white tissue paper like you use for gift wrapping. It seems to do ok but is way too fragile. I will look for something stronger the next time I go shopping.

This little birdie volunteered to be my test subject. He's one of my most favorite things. Not only does he chirp when you move him, but he reminds me of ONE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD who also happens to have one of these birds.

a modern utility knife with a built in glass breaker. a glass breaker is a sharp pointed tip designed to break tempered glass during an emergency while the knife can slice through seatbelts

Better Versions of what I already had up. Several people asked for them. :)

At the top is 3 of the Banpresto prize lamps (these weren't for sale but had to be won at a Japanese arcade making it all the more difficult to get a full set). I have a full set and a couple extras of Jupiter and I think Venus. These lights were among my top favorite items in my collection. They would look great on a desk illuminating Sailor Moon stationery items as those below. :D

Also in the pic are a rare set of white chopsticks, mechanical pencils, mechanical pencil lead holders (the one on the far right has Sailor Venus as a nurse with a candy striper Chibiusa/Rini) with lead, a couple of very kawaii pencil sharpeners (which of course are quite unneeded with mechanical pencils :D but Sailor Moon as a chibi naked cupid is too cute and there is an HD Japanese pencil with Eternal Sailor Moon just above them), an Artemis, a charm bracelet with enameled charms, another glue bottle, and another style of utility knife (great for opening boxes and letters), along with a Jupiter keychain and an articulated Pluto (to help judge the relative size of the other items but she does come with her staff).

Details can be better seen by looking at the large size.

Additional Stationery accessories here. :D

More Chopsticks here.

While quite handy for eating, these also would make lovely hair accessories.

Today's prompt for my 365 is "the right tool" as in "hand tool", "device" and "gizmo" so my little utility knife is always a handy thing to have at hand - hardly ever use it, though!!

This was completed Nov 9th 2008 and was ordered as a gift for a 2 year old boy(for Christmas.. shhhhhh!).I had a hard time dealing with the glare that my camera's flash kept giving me so I photo'd it without the matte or frame. After I took these pics, I put it into an 10X13 shadowbox frame that was matted to 8X10.

TUKK utility knife from Tactical Keychains that uses small hobby blades

We are nearing the completion of our kitchen remodel and are trying to find locations for everything. Years ago I had used the upper magnetic rack in an apartment, but when we moved into our house there wasn't a good location for it and I instead began using an in drawer knife holder. That worked great for a while, but the knives cut through the pegs holding it together. It still worked, but wasn't very secure. When the new cabinets were installed there wasn't a drawer that would fit the rack, so I went back to the magnetic holder. My collection had grown over the years, so I picked up an additional rack and attached them to the side of a cabinet next to the sink. I think it will make for a great prep area once our counter is installed.

All knives are Wusthof Classic unless otherwise noted.

Top row: 3 1/2 inch paring knife, 4 1/2 inch utility knife, four steak knives, LamsonSharp walnut oyster knife, poultry shears

Bottom row: 7 inch hollow ground santoko, 8 inch carving knife, 10 inch chef knife, 9 inch bread knife, 6 inch cleaver

The chef knife is new and a virgin. I am looking forward to putting it to use as soon as I can cook in the kitchen again.

The knives!

From top to bottom:

Petty/Utility

This is the knife for smaller jobs that are done on a cutting board. Think slicing shallots, cutting herbs and boning smaller cuts of meat, fish or birds. Petty knives are making more appearances in professional kitchens lately

Nakiri

A Nakiri is a vegetable knife. They are under utilized in the Western kitchen. The flat blade is meant for push/pull chopping of vegetables. Since the entire flat edge of the knife strikes (actually I should say 'kisses') the cutting board at once the chance of accordion vegetables is greatly reduced. Accordion vegetables are still connected like paper dolls after one finishes cutting them. You can pick them up and squeeze together like an accordion. To truly understand the benefit of a Nakiri make onion soup when you first bring this knife home. It will all be clear after the onions are chopped.

Santoku

This is also a multi purpose knife, but with a slight vegetable bias. Santoku means 'Three Virtues' or 'To solve Three Problems'. The virtues or problems are slicing, dicing and mincing. Santoku is usually found in 160mm - 190mm lengths. These are more and more popular in Western kitchens due to the unique shape and smaller easy to handle size.

Gyuto

Translates to "Cow Sword" this is a multi purpose knife with a slight meat cutting bias. The shape is based on the classic European chef's knife. This is the knife that will do everything for you. Sizes start at 180mm and can reach a ridiculous 360mm with 240mm being the most common. A Gyuto with a traditional Japanese handle is called a Wa-Gyuto

these bad boy’s arrived yesterday afternoon – much to my excitement!! the survival knife will be predominantly used on hikes for bushwhacking – as i tend to veer off the beaten path. the smaller utility knife will be used as an everyday tool and will also be great for camping and outdoor adventures.

the blades are forged out of high carbon steel and the handles are made out of aspen wood (my favorite tree).

much thanks to Ryu Lim for his amazing craftsmanship, blacksmithing and for the artistic soul he added to these knives. i’m forever grateful.

cheers to many adventures and getting deeper into the forest.

Kitchen Knives & Wildlife Knives

Brian had a mishap with a utility knife on the job and ended up in the ER with 14 stitches.

Moral of the story: cut yourself with a utility knife on the job and you don't have to climb in 150 degree attics for awhile.

Loving the compact and light weight (22g) #Screwpop Utility Knife. It uses standard utility blades (2 or 4 notched) and allows up to four controlled depths of cuts. Its ingenious lever system (along with the addition of an ultra-strong neodymium magnet) serves as a blade stop and catch. #screwpoptool #knife #utilityknife #edc #everydaycarry #camping #hiking #pocketdump #bbpack bit.ly/1NSYMB8

My personal favourite blade on top of my olive green shemagh!

An unflashed version of the similar picture.

These are great office/school supplies and include an Eternal Sailormoon Japanese pencil, a couple of the breakaway utility knives (for opening boxes and other uses), a few of the cute Sailormoon mechanical pencils, ironically next to the very cute pencil sharpeners (which have a delightful sparkle), but with 5 different pencil lead refill containers on the other side.

All the leads are 0.5mm.

The last thing is a bottle of Sailormoon glue.
