A random snapshot of one of the electrical utility poles that's on South Jackson Street across from the Lincoln County Public Library within the downtown area of Brookhaven, MS.
This pole is one of the few old poles that still have the old lineman foot pegs. Linemen used to access the utility lines (telephone, telephone, or electrical) up on the poles with these metal pegs before they started using bucket trucks. Linemen also use (in some cases) spiked boots and a belt to climb up the poles, especially in rough, tight areas where it's hard to get a bucket truck into. Most of the old poles that are still in service have had their metal pegs removed so that people (idiots) don't just climb up the poles.
I never realized how much utility poles and wires can change the character of a community until we bought the new house. While we can now be carefree with ladders, we have to be careful with digging.

Heavily re-processed: detail from larger photo, softened and colour boosted.
Beyond this sign lies a reservoir and electrical pumping equipment. The sign warning of death by electricity is behind a fence. In between the fence and the sign are dead plants.
This was taken for the Guardian Camera Club "Utilities" entry. I rejected it as the only interesting element in the photo comes from a heavily altered version.
