Eurasian Eagle Owls are likely the largest species of owl in the world. Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa) are slightly longer in the body, and Blakiston's Fish Owls (Bubo blakistoni) weigh a little more, but only the Eurasian Eagle Owl boasts a six-and-a-half-foot wingspan. Its conspicuous ear tufts are reminiscent of North America's Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), but the Eagle Owl's orange eyes and great size make it distinctive. As an apex predator, the Eurasian Eagle Owl has no natural predators. Even the Golden Eagle, with whom the Eagle Owl shares both range and food preferences, is seldom in direct conflict with the Owls, thanks to the birds hunting at different times of day (the Golden Eagle in daytime, the Eagle Owl at night). A lifespan of 20 years in the wild isn't uncommon for Eurasian Eagle Owls; birds in zoological care have been known to live as long as 60 years. Eurasian Eagle Owls have distinct individual vocalizations. Every member of a Eurasian Eagle Owl population can be reliably identified by voice alone.

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is also called the European eagle-owl and in Europe, it is occasionally abbreviated to just eagle-owl. It is one of the largest species of owl, and females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), males being slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts, with upper parts that are mottled with darker blackish colouring and tawny. The wings and tail are barred. The underparts are a variably hued buff, streaked with darker colour. The facial disc is poorly developed and the orange eyes are distinctive. Besides being one of the largest living species of owl, it is also one of the most widely distributed. The Eurasian eagle-owl is found in many habitats but is mostly a bird of mountain regions, coniferous forests, steppes and other relatively remote places. It is a mostly nocturnal predator, hunting for a range of different prey species, predominantly small mammals but also birds of varying sizes, reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects and other assorted invertebrates. It typically breeds on cliff ledges, in gullies, among rocks or in other concealed locations. The nest is a scrape in which averages of two eggs are laid at intervals. These hatch at different times. The female incubates the eggs and broods the young, and the male provides food for her and when they hatch, for the nestlings as well. Continuing parental care for the young is provided by both adults for about five months. There are at least a dozen subspecies of Eurasian eagle-owl. With a total range in Europe and Asia of about 32 million square kilometres (12 million square miles) and a total population estimated to be between 250 thousand and 2.5 million, the IUCN lists the bird's conservation status as being of "least concern". The vast majority of eagle-owls live in mainland Europe, Russia and Central Asia, and an estimated number of between 12 and 40 pairs are thought to reside in the United Kingdom as of 2016, a number which may be on the rise. Tame eagle-owls have occasionally been used in pest control because of their size to deter large birds such as gulls from nesting.

The National Aviary, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the only independent indoor nonprofit aviary in the United States. It is also the country's largest aviary, and the only accorded honorary "National" status by the United States Congress. The aviary is home to over 500 birds representing more than 150 species, and is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

We approached Big Bend from the west, driving along the winding river road from Presidio (one hill along it apparently has the steepest grade in Texas). The park itself includes a huge amount of territory, including an actual big bend in the Rio Grande River (and several canyons it flows through), but the centerpiece of the park is the Chisos Mountains, that big massif ahead. It's not quite as consolidated as it appears here, and there are definite individual mountains within. The tallest is Emory Peak, just to right of center here. Anyway, clearly it's a road trip through all-around classic "western" desert scenery.
Aliʻiōlani Hale is a building located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, currently used as the home of the Hawaiʻi State Supreme Court. It is the former seat of government of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and the Republic of Hawaiʻi.
I have some pictures I've taken and I'm not sure why I ever shot them. This is a good example – it's lovely, but we wouldn't want it.
It's a giant mansion many times the size of our comfortable small home. We have enough to handle around our house and we certainly aren't looking for more to care for.
So, this image is being posted as the first in a new Flickr album called - This is NOT - and as time goes by I'll add photos of more stuff that isn't ours.
We don't covet any of these things – we just thought they were interesting at one point in time.

"Even though St. Elmo is considered a ghost town it is still inhabited. Tourism brings many people to the St. Elmo area every year. The old mining roads are now used as Jeep and four-wheeler trails. There are also many good places to fish along Chalk Creek, which runs through St. Elmo. The general store is open during the summer, when tourists can rent four-wheelers or buy items. Many of the buildings are still intact"
I recently located a few long lost images from a trip we took years ago. I believe the photos were taken with a Canon AE-1 that is now even more 'lost' than these old pictures.

The Fall season in Alaska is stunning! This image was made along the dirt road near Chicken, Alaska and along the route known as Top of the World Highway.
When I was a boy, for several summers in a row, my grandfather would take us on a long journey to visit my great grandmother. It was a little over 200 miles or so across the plains of South Texas and the landscape was bald with nothing but telephone poles as far as you could see. It might be different now (filled in with suburbs and malls) because I'm thinking back some 50 years ago. But I remember watching the telephone poles whizzing by for hours. To me it looked like they were making some pilgrimage into eternity. Recently, traveling cross country, I stopped in Barstow at a convenience store. When I stepped back outside I saw this. The memory I had as a kid came back to me and I clicked the shutter.
